I've consistently found Dixon Ticonderoga pencils to be superior to the cheap brands (and to the less expensive non-Ticonderoga Dixon pencils). The placement of the lead has always been true, they sharpen without the lead shattering, writing quality is very smooth and the erasers work well too. These particular pencils seem to be of about the same quality as the classic Ticonderoga but the wood itself has been dyed black, and the outside is painted with a shimmery silver/rainbow "holographic" look. As an added bonus, they are even pre-sharpened. My daughter always asks for these at back-to-school time and says that her friends often want to use them instead of their plain yellow pencils or even other flashy pencils with various colored designs on them. They seem a bit hard to find this year. Hopefully that's just because they are selling well, not because they are being discontinued or something. In any case I got a bunch from Amazon that should hopefully last us a while. Even though Ticonderogas are no longer made in the USA *sigh* (I think it's Mexico and China now) they're still very good pencils so I can't help but continue to recommend them. ... show more

When the Mirado Black Warrior pencil was changed a few years ago (I think production was shifted to China) we lost a very fine pencil. This is not a minor matter for those of us who need to closely annotate papers and books, write small letters with accent marks in Greek, or as in the case of several of my children, mark up musical scores for performance. As the remarkable book The Pencil demonstrates, the world has long had a need for quality pencils, and it is not a casual assignment to fulfill. Finally, I have located a replacement. This pencil makes a nice, clear mark, takes a good point and holds it, and is quite reasonable for the price. The feel when writing is pleasing. While I am not sure if it quite up to the full quality of the old Black Warriors, I will need to run across one of those in a drawer somewhere to make a side-by-side comparison. Until then, this is my standard premium pencil. There are some other good HB 2 pencils here on Amazon (check the reviews), but this sets the standard for me! ... show more

Solid, durable, beautiful, smooth-writing pencils Though they are so pretty and unique that these pencils can be spotted across the room, they are impossible to get back once loaned out. So I'm a teacher and thought that these hologram pencils would be a really cool incentive to keep up with and take care of supplies for my 2nd graders. They took about 2 weeks to finally get to me and when I opened the package I was so disappointed. They are beautiful pencils buy it was only 12 of them. Who pays 15 dollars for 12 pencils?! I immediately returned them for a refund and let Amazon know that the offerings and title were misleading. ... show more
