  • Good intermediate level SIM racing wheel
Pattern Name: Racer 488 Challenge Edition
The product was well packed and arrived in perfect condition. Setup was very easy and took very little time to get the wheel up and running. Calibration with iRacing was simple and easy. I mounted to a desk and the clamping mechanism worked satisfactorily. I will eventually mount it to a frame, but that is for another generation of the rig. Getting a set of pedals was the biggest issue (Covid-19 caused shortage) but now that I have the T3PA-Pro pedals attached, it all works well. ... show more

  • Makes for an immersive experience
Pattern Name: Racer 488 Challenge Edition
This is the first force feedback wheel I've ever owned. I've wanted one since I was a kid. The force feedback on this wheel is much more powerful than I expected it to be. I'm a pretty big guy and I couldn't keep the wheel still when surprised with a strong jolt. It isn't stronger than me, but it's strong enough for me to feel what's happening with my wheels. I'm looking into getting a cockpit frame now because this thing is going to tear my Ikea desk apart. I can't use it at night because all the junk rattling in my desk drawers would wake everyone up. If I had the wheel on a better surface I doubt it would ever be louder than a cell phone vibrating on a table. I got the Challenge edition with the round closed wheel. The wheel rim itself feels and looks like a toy wheel. The LED shift indicator is very useful and cool. The paddle shifters are satisfying to click and seem like they're built to last. The buttons, joysticks, and dails are cool looking, but they feel cheap, are kind of hard to use while driving. I'm worried about how long they will last. I would be shocked if the wheel makes it through 100k miles of sim racecar driving without something breaking on this rim. Also the metal edges are kind of sharp. I think I could cut myself on this if the wheel were to whip around into my hand. The motor and power supply feel very premium and the table mounting system is great. They for sure have better engineering and manufacturing than the wheel rim does. I expect these parts to last LONG time. Overall this is an awesome controller! However I feel like it's a little overpriced. I would have been perfectly happy with it if I paid around $500 instead of $700. ... show more

  • Built to last - for a while...
Pattern Name: Racer 488 Challenge Edition
No problems installing to a nextlevelracing GTTrack Sim cockpit. Performed great (as expected) for about 3 months, then wheel started to wobble slightly. Upon closer look: one of the tiny mounting screws around the Ferrari logo had fallen out, and several were loose: some threadlocker or better factory torquing is needed: after hand-tightening them, they have stayed in place for 8 months. Those screws are TINY, and if they fall into a plush carpet, you better have a good magnet - and patience -finding them. Next up: the left (down) shift paddle developed a problem. You had to squeeze much harder to initiate a shift. Customer service: needed a video of the problem. Uploaded. Problem verified. Informed me that the wheel had to be shipped to France (!) from California, repaired, and shipped back. Minimum 2 weeks (for optimists). I decided to wait a few more weeks with the repair until I was going out of town (there was no option to get a loaner wheel, or to buy a cheap spare), and by that time the right shifter paddle started to show the same symptoms (indication of a life expectancy issue), AND another one of the screws had come loose: attaching the shifter paddle to the wheel. Same (insufficient torque) issue. 2 days before my trip I asked for the shipping label and pointed out the issue with the second (up) shifter paddle (increased pressure needed, identical to the other). Customer service: need to do another video, shipping label takes 3-4 days (say WHAT?!!), print 3 copies of a pro-forma invoice. By the time I received the label (first day of my trip out of the country) I had already said goodbye to the Thrustmaster brand, and will go with Fanatec, as soon as the wheel completely gives up. ... show more

  • Help please
Pattern Name: Racer 488 Challenge Edition
Received Europe’s version that is 240v...useless in America, which BTW is where I live, and where you shipped it from. Zero response so far from message to seller and attempts to contact support site and number for Thrustmaster. Totally lame. Wheel looks and feels very nice, wish it would work here in America! ... show more

  • Giving up after two malfunctioning wheels
Pattern Name: Racer 488 Challenge Edition
Positive : The wheel looks and feels nice. When it actually works it is fun and has a decent amount of power. Negatives : Initially mounting the wheel to a sim rig is nearly impossible as the threads for the screws are not a real size. The instructions say to use an m6 screw...and m6 screw does NOT fit the threads. I tried an M5 and it would screw in but would not tighten because it was too lose. I ended up having to buy an m6 tap and rethread the holes myself since no standard screw known to man would fit (i tried imperial equivilents as well in case the instructions were european or something). I figured I just got a bad one but the second one did the exact same thing. The second time i tried to just force the screw in because the instructions say "drive the screw in." Needless to say this did not go well and the screw just twisted off in the hole which was a major hassle. The first wheel was fine for a week or so but then had some sort of malfunction with the usb connector; the control panel said all of the buttons except 1 were pressed at all times. This made actually using it nearly impossible as whatever game you were playing thought you were pushing buttons at all times. The actual motor/wheel/forcefeedback still worked just fine. I requested and recieved a replacement from Amazon. The second wheel was just straight up broken right out of the box. I could notice a much louder whine/sound from the first one. The motor would jerk around and seize up randomly and regularly which also made playing any sort of game impossible. The hitching seemed to increase in frequency the longer the wheel was on until it was happening like every 5 seconds. I returned both wheels, got a refund and went and ordered a Fanatec direct drive instead which is similarly priced and a MUCH better product. Overall I really liked the look and feel of the wheel and was pretty dissapointed I couldn't keep it. Also, Im not trying to poop all over Thrustmaster here...I have Thrustmaster Tlcm pedals and H-shifter as well and both are fantastic. Perhaps I just got really unlucky but my opinion is if you have the money to spend on this wheel do yourself a favor, avoid it, and get an entry level direct drive wheel instead as they are comparable in price, a much better product, and the quality control on this wheel seems majorly lacking. ... show more

  • This thing is fun
Pattern Name: Racer 488 Challenge Edition
I have not had this for long but so far I am loving it. The quality is quite nice and the wheel itself looks very good. Lots of buttons. Playing forza with this after years of a controller made it feel like a brand new game.

  • Wrong Version Received- Resolved
Pattern Name: Racer 488 Challenge Edition
Received 220-240V which is not for North America. I'd very much like to write an actual review but I can't. I can't plug the wheel in because I've received the 220-240V version. Hoping to have this situation resolved soon so I can write an actual review. Update: Thrustmaster customer service acted quickly and sent me a 110V power supply. Now everything works as it should. The wheel is a solid mid range wheel and should serve me well until the time comes for a DD wheel upgrade. ... show more

  • Entry Level at best
Pattern Name: Racer 488 Challenge Edition
If you are serious about simracing and plan to run anything other than Rally or Oval then do not buy this rim. You cannot reach any of the buttons while using a shifter as they are just too far apart. To add to the frustration trying to use it in some games is almost impossible as most dont even see it plugged in. There are better options out there, this one isnt worth your money. ... show more
