Description

In late-'50s Pittsburgh, middle-aged trashman and one-time Negro Leaguer Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington) remained bitter that he never got his shot... and his lingering resentments might drive a wedge between him and the teenage son (Jovan Adepo) with a legitimate shot at a football scholarship. Washington directs and reprises his Tony-winning performance; August Wilson adapted his Pulitzer Prize-winning play for the screen. • A Great Period Piece!
If one inquired about the African American experience in 1950s America, then this movie would be a good place to start.

  • 5 stars for first 4 acts; 3 stars for ending
Denzel Washington is magnificent in the role of Troy, the African-American garbage man in Pittsburgh seeking to better his life and that of his family against fearsome odds both external and internal. Set in the 1950s, Troy had the skills and desire to play in the Major Leagues but when they began to desegregate baseball, he was already in his forties and considered too old. Instead, he found the best job he could and married. With a few exeptions (Troy had a VERY full life, probably too full to be physically possible), the first four acts are all world-class. The last act tacks on, however, a happy ending that doesn't ring true to me. In particular, the role of Rose needed much more development if she is to defend Troy as strongly as she did. ... show more

  • Awesome movie
I watched this movie when it was originally released. And although it is outstanding, I didn't like it. I thought there was waaaay too much dialog and that it dragged on. Just watched it again and wow just wow. I still think Troy is a mean man. But boy do I get him. He was all about surviving for himself and his family. Given his childhood he wasn't taught any better. But he did the best he knew how and was a better parent then his. His drive, determination, even his wisdom reminds me of the hard working fathers of the 60s and 70s who were denied many opportunities but never threw in the towel and walked away or buried themselves in alcohol 24/7. My dad was a very kind man, but I see so much of him on Troy's character. Thank You Denzel for bringing this story to the big screen.. ... show more
