It really grows!

I was looking for a food plot material for Whitetail Deer that could be planted in an area with minimal sun exposure and this looked like one of the few that might stand a chance. I disregarded the instructions on the package about PH testing and fertilizing. I only had a small area to plant (10ftx15ft). I highly recommend (what I did not do) is to spray your area with a vegetation killer or something like Round Up 2x-3x over 2-3 months before planting to clear out the area. I raked the area with a garden rake to remove any leaves and debris, and scratched up the top 2 inches or so of soil. I used about 1-2 cups of seed over this area in a small plastic Scott's spreader (a whole bag will do a 1/4 acre!). After I spread it, I flipped the rake over to the smooth side and gently went over the plot to help ensure good seed to soil contact. I then mixed up a batch of regular Miracle Gro and sprayed it over the plot. 2 weeks later I have about 4 inches of Rye Grass popping up! Keep in mind - it needs SOME sunlight to grow anything. The package says something like 4-6 hours a day but my area wouldn't even come close to getting that. What came up was not very thick, but it is better than what I thought was going to come up - which was nothing! I'm going to upload 2 pictures - one of the plot in general, and one up close. These pics were taken 2 weeks after planting. I shot the area with another batch of miracle grow again and will check it in 2 more weeks. ... show more

I planted this in late august, and let me tell you, it grows and the deer eat it. If you use some common sense and take the time to get a soil test, and throw down some lime or 10-10-10, you will have fantastic results. The deer have been eating up my food plot, and it looks like a lawn mower when through it. I planted this food plot in the far back woods, and it's in an old creek bed that intersects with an old dirt road. It has a bit of tree cover, and only gets sun for 4-6 hours a day, but this stuff grew and it grew well. I raked the whole area, and roughed up the ground a bit. Then I put it in my hand spreader (after laying down some lime) and went to work. I did all of this before a rain storm passed through and it came up strong within 3 weeks. I also prepped by food plot before with some weed killer, and that really helped prevent any weeds from killing off my crops. I've bought this twice now, and I'm planning on planting it again in the fall. It's the least amount of work I've put into a food plot and it's already paid off big. I've attached some photos I took of a food plot I planted at a friends stand, I didn't even lay down any lime or 10-10-10, and it still took hold and grew well. I will be buying this again. I just wish we could get some throw&Gro soybeans! ... show more

Good for hide-away hunting spots
Easy seed choice for smaller, secluded food plots that may not have each access for more tilling and plot preparation.

Didn't work as expected
Didn't work as expected. The price was great and seemed of good quality, but I didn't see any growth. Maybe next time I will have to tiller the ground.

Disappointed
I purchased 2 bags. They came, as promised. and appeared to be quality like packs. The contents of 1 pkg didn't sprout at all! The second package only produced winter rye grass! The rye grass is lovely, but not what was promoted.
