I didn't get this item for free, so you can trust that my review is solid. Mosquitos are pretty picky about who they prey upon. They prefer a particular scent and blood chemistry which is why I can understand why the reviews range from "didn't work" to "changed my life." Let's face it - when you're in an area where mosquitos are so thick that you can hear them buzzing and watch them landing on your skin, you should just go inside. Not much is going to save you. However, if you're like me and your skin lights up with a neon sign for the mosquitos (and you are the ONLY one they're biting in a group), you're happy to try just about anything that will keep them away from you. My husband bought this Thermacell Repeller so I would stop complaining. I still haven't stopped complaining (sorry, honey), but I have stopped flapping my gums about mosquitos. We put this Repeller out on our porch during the beginning of summer, before the mosquitos were really out and about. About mid-summer I started telling my health care provider (and all of my friends) that I must be going through menopause early or having some major blood chemistry change, because mosquitos were no longer seeking me out of a group. As long as we were outside around our home, I just wasn't getting a bite. It was miraculous and beautiful. Then we went to a friend's house. Ouch. They were all over me again. It took me a while to realize (yeah, I'm a little slow) that the reason I wasn't getting bit at home was because my husband had lit the Thermacell each time we were outside. I honestly didn't even realize it was on and running. It doesn't make noise, doesn't product a smell, and doesn't really take up any room at all. Pretty dang amazing. We went through 3 scent pads this summer and one fill of butane and it keeps on going. It's easy to throw in a bag and take anywhere with us. Most everyone who visited this summer has purchased one. I never get bitten!!!!!!! Covers the inside of my garage, and a good portion in front of my garage just by putting it at the end of the table that we have at the corner of the garage door. I am a redhead pale skin blue-eyed girl. Normally I would get bit walking out into my garage the first five seconds. I’m standing out here. I don’t have that issue anymore. The last few warm weather seasons, we’ve noticed that the mosquitos have been aggressive. We have three outdoor spaces that vary in the amount of mosquitos we encounter. I was impressed to watch the mosquitos fly towards me and quickly turn away. Also, in the more aggressive area, I turned it on a few minutes before my husband had to go outside and it seemed to work well in deterring mosquitos. It’s not perfect and I wouldn’t say the distance advertisement is completely accurate but there’s definitely a shield around you. No smells and no mess. We bought one of these to use on our deck during the covid summer of 2020. Our yard backs up to a swamp, and the mosquitoes were relentless, but this changed the game for us. It worked so well that we invested in another to have expanded coverage and stayed outside every night until it was time for bed. If you buy one, read all the instructions and FAQs. Watch the videos. Set it up right if you want it to work effectively. Turn it on outside at least 15 minutes before you need it. Put in on the floor/ground, because it spreads across the floor and wafts upward. Keep an eye on it - don't let the butane run out or the mat turn white, because it will stop being effective. Follow the instructions, and it will work for you. ... show more

So, I live in the South and during the summers, it gets hot, humid, and mosquito-ridden. During these times, I like to stay inside as I may be the biggest mosquito magnet there is. It doesn't help that I have allergic reactions to them, so win all around for mosquitos. I have used many different mosquito repellants separately and in combination with others. I will say that this is pretty good and one of the best. It does a good job of repelling mosquitos in a certain radius (not so sure if it's as big as advertised, but it is big enough). I like to set it out when I'm with family on the porch, but I have to make sure that I set it out in advance and still use other repellants (long sleeves/pants and spray). Even with all these preventative measures, I still get bitten but it does feel like a lot less. Buy to use for camping or eating outside in one area. However, it does not work well if you intend to keep on you and walk around. It's a bit larger than a soda can (more like a small thermos) but it is portable. ... show more

This is great for keeping bugs away while you are outdoors. It’s easy to use and let’s out a small amount of smoke but you cannot smell it. I noticed a huge difference using it one day. Love it!!

We have tried several solutions for repelling mosquitoes. This device does just that, without any chemicals or sprays. We put it in the middle of our outdoor seating area and it protects everyone. determining if the device is activated is a little tricky, but not too difficult. That is an area that could be improved. The device works so well, I would hardly consider the other statement as a complaint, more of an observation. ... show more
