Nice piece, but.. I initially didn't really care much for this. But I decided to give it a couple hours play time to see if I could uncover its secrets. I think I got out of it most of what it could do. First of all, it's not overly bright or harsh.. less bright than I expected, actually, (probably due to the material it's made of?). Everything about it was GOOD- (good core, good edge, good intonation), but nothing about it was GREAT... For me, there were 2 strong negatives... 1.) I found that starting a riff on D, (low or mid register), the mouthpiece did not want to respond. Never had that problem on any other pro mouthpiece. I had to be VERY careful on these notes, keep my throat more open, have a good lungful of air, and at the same time, not blow too hard or too fast. Almost like trying to start a riff on low C, or playing a horn with a slight leak... After a few hours of playing, I adapted, but that just should not be a concern on a pro piece... 2.) When playing a long line, I sometimes get to the limit of how much air I have left, and I will try to end the line on a soft, tender sounding, low note. But this mouthpiece just dies when I do this. And again, it does not happen on any of my other pro mouthpieces. And again, I adapted after a few hours, but I don't want to work this hard in these two areas... After playing this piece, I played a cheap Chinese mouthpiece that I refaced, and it was a relief to not have to worry about these problems... I don't want to sound too negative, because I think that some players might love this piece. It is well made, very attractive. I like the shape and feel in my mouth. I like the way the outline of the table sort of continues down on to the shank, to make it easier to line up the bottom of the reed. I think it sounds better than my Vandoren Jumbo Java (too bright/harsh).... Just for grins, I compared a Rico metalite M7 and also an M5 back to back with this piece, and the Wanne was way more expressive, and more fun to play. But when I put the Wanne back on, once again, middle D did not play, until I reminded myself that I had to attack the note more slowly. I could get used to that, I suppose, if I absolutely LOVED the sound of the Wanne, but I have 3 mouthpieces that are more enjoyable to play- ( Link TM 7*, a Berg Larsen, and a refaced Chinese piece). I also have 2 different model Yibuy #9 Chinese mouthpieces that I did not have to reface, but they are more like a #6 on the standard Link 100 #7 scale. Still, very playable and gig worthy... Next day: I picked my horn up, and this mouthpiece was on the horn, so I played, and I was liking it. Might even take it to the gig tonight and see what it does....Update: I changed from 4 stars to 5, after putting more hours into this mouthpiece, (and after finding a metal lig that fits it, instead of the Rovner I was using.) I find that this piece is now in my top 3 or 4 pieces. Once you really unlock it's secrets, you find that it has a HUGE sound, is bright but never harsh, and it does have some special colors once you find them, which were not apparent in the first few hours of playing, using the Rovner lig. Also, the negatives I described above seem to have disappeared.

The mouthpiece plays loud when pushed. Altissimo is easy to play. I wish I had more “Great” things to say about this mouthpiece. Unfortunately, the mouthpiece chirped as I played it. I used different brands of reeds and different strengths. I adjusted the amount of air and even my embouchure, but I don’t believe someone should have to work this hard. I’m a professional musician, play/practice daily, and “I can make it work” but I have other mouthpieces that work better. I’m usually playing into a mic so I go for the sound. If a Theo Wanne product is what you want, recommend the Essential Jazz Tenor mouthpiece.
