Description

A New York Times Bestseller From New York Times bestselling author Fiona Davis, an utterly addictive new novel that will transport you from New York City’s most glamorous party to the labyrinth streets of Cairo and back. Egypt, 1936: When anthropology student Charlotte Cross is offered a coveted spot on an archaeological dig in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, she leaps at the opportunity. That is until an unbearable tragedy strikes. New York City, 1978: Nineteen-year-old Annie Jenkins is thrilled when she lands an opportunity to work for former Vogue fashion editor Diana Vreeland, who’s in the midst of organizing the famous Met Gala, hosted at the museum and known across the city as the “party of the year.” Meanwhile, Charlotte is now leading a quiet life as the associate curator of the Met’s celebrated Department of Egyptian Art. She’s consumed by her research on Hathorkare—a rare female pharaoh dismissed by most other Egyptologists as unimportant. The night of the gala: One of the Egyptian art collection’s most valuable artifacts goes missing, and there are signs Hathorkare’s legendary curse might be reawakening. Annie and Charlotte team up to search for the missing antiquity, and a desperate hunch leads the unlikely duo to one place Charlotte swore she’d never return: Egypt. But if they have any hope of finding the artifact, Charlotte will need to confront the demons of her past—which may mean leading them both directly into danger. Read more

  • Found Queens; Solved Mysteries!
Format: Kindle
Fiona Davis’s gifts are historical research, detailed descriptions, and nuanced narrative through character perspectives and time lenses. So no surprise that she delivers, yet again, a superb story fusion of history and mystery focused on Egyptian relics, dramas, losses, and recoveries. Set in the Metropolitan, no red carpet is needed, but certainly welcome as behind the scenes exhibition imagining, constructing, and preparing reveal the intricacies and dedication of all manner of professionals, from educated experts to volunteers, from docents and pages, to department heads to donors. The story includes flashbacks to a period in 1937 to the present day of story’s time, but the shifts whir and spin well, magnifying intrigue, suspense, and curiosity. Beyond the story are debated concepts about the ownership or provenance of relics, artifacts, and discoveries. What roles could and should museums possess in protecting, showcasing, and/or relocating artifacts? Fortunately, the answer left for readers to decide or consider. Davis’s books provide multiple gifts: inspiring history, insightful information, and dramatic story. Always worth reading! ... show more

  • Pleasantly Surprised
Format: Kindle
I went into Stolen Queen expecting one thing, but it completely surprised me—in the best way possible. The story took unexpected turns, keeping me engaged from start to finish. The characters were well-developed, and the world-building was immersive. While there were a few moments that felt slower or could have used more depth, overall, it was a compelling read. Definitely worth picking up if you enjoy a mix of intrigue, romance, and adventure. ... show more

I totally enjoyed this book, however, hard to grasp that two people can reconnect with the population there. Good book club book, open to discussion.

A good story about a young family in Egypt in the early 20th century. Years later, a tragedy that befell the youngfamily is resolved but not without help from a clever young Met employee. I enjoyed this book because of the characters in the story and all of the interesting facts about Egyptian artifacts and the metropolitan museum. ... show more

  • A novel well worth the read
Format: Kindle
The story is the result of a talented storyteller. The character development was good. The writing is outstanding as the words just flow off the page. There is mystery and intrigue. There is sadness, but also growth, renewal, and second chances. It is difficult these days to find really good writers; Fiona Davis’ skill in creating mental pictures for the reader is well worth noting. The descriptions of the mannequins at the Met Gala are a perfect example. The pairing of Charlotte and Annie was just perfect… Each offered the other what she had been missing in her life. Their friendship seemed so natural even though unexpected. I have been fascinated by Egyptology since I was very young. The details are evidence of the excellent research that they author completed. It never felt like a fact giving “dump.“ Because it was such descriptive writing, it was easy to imagine the weather in Egypt, the hieroglyphics in the tomb, the sunsets, the dusty streets and marketplaces, and even the brilliant blue color of the of the queen’s broken sculpture. What a skill to be able to evoke such sharp mental pictures for the reader! I enjoyed this book in one sitting because I could not put it down. It is a great novel! ... show more
