  • A Beautiful generational emotional novel for all
You Natalie Fergie are an incredible author. This novel was either from your family history & if not, it was a 5 ⭐️ debut! I so related to this also. I have 4 generations of Singer sewing machine users, including myself, where we made everything from quilts (me) to excellent clothes to wear. I started to cry in various chapters because it brought back so many memories. I was handed down a 1935 Singer and I made a lot of clothes with it, durable it was. In the short of it, I had a hit & run accident 3 yrs ago where I could no longer use my hands to sew. I was forced to sell it for nearly nothing, I felt like the character who write secret notes in the bobbin to tell everyone to pray for her. That chapter was very hard for me. As each chapter went on, I remembered my great grandmother thru my Mum sewing their hands till they ached. Where I took no notice of it until I started to see for friends & neighbors who would ask me to make them something. When I sold that durable heavy duty Singer, I hadn’t thought about it until I finished this, and I just continued to cry. Sewing it not only an art, but it’s a hand down tradition. You either are gifted with it or not. That’s what I received from this novel. The stories, the research and secret messages were enchanting and I only hope and wish there will be a follow up book. I only wish my beautiful Singer wasn’t sold for almost nothing because I miss that machine so much and to this day I regret that I am now much better but wish I had that beautiful, black very heavy, perfect sewing machine here today. Wow I’ve never been so emotional in a review... The narration was near perfect. I’m originally from England & part of my family lives in Scotland so I was never confused on who was who speaking 5 stars on narration too!! Natalie if I could give more than 5 stars ⭐️I would, for story, content, generational, and overall the wow factor...thank you for remembering your history my history and my beautiful Singer I’ll never see again 😘😘 ... show more

  • Novel of Scottish family memories and secrets
This book will have you recalling the wonderful memories and projects made using your sewing machine. If you were lucky enough to be handed down a sewing machine, then this story will really make a connection with you. If only the sewing machines could talk, the secrets they might tell! This book is highly researched as it touches on the Singer sewing machine factory strike in Scotland, World War I, and stretches over several generations of Scottish families. It was a bit difficult to connect the dots between the characters until almost the end of the book. However, without giving away too much of the story, I will say that the characters were very interesting and the story quite complex. This book has inspired me to pull out my old sewing machine and make something for my grandchildren. ... show more

  • Captivating!
Interesting from the very first page. I have a few Singer Featherweight sewing machines and love the history of the Singer company. This story brings it to a more personal level. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

  • Too many characters, and jumped around. Someone help me figure it out!
Please HELP! I read every word in the book. It jumped around so much that I had a hard time figuring out who is who. Someone please reply to me and explain the characters...all I know is they are interwoven, but STILL I can't figure out how. I need a graphic organizer of the geneology or something to help me make sense. HELP! I loved the premise of the book. I loved how Fred taught himself how to use the machine...and all the practical things he made with it. However, I want to understand the storyline. ... show more

  • Three time periods, three families and the life and times of the sewing machine.
The novel follows stories in 3 different time periods, with the common thread (pun intended) of sewing machines. One story line is about workers in the Singer factory, making the machines in the early 1900s. Times are hard, and the factory is brutal. The laborers go on strike for improved working conditions, and many of them never get their jobs back. The second story line is in the 1940s, dealing with a woman who sews to make ends meet for her family. She uses the same old machine, preferring it to newer electric models that are coming out. Finally, the third story line takes place in present day. A man has inherited his grandmother's sewing machine, using it mostly as a door stop until he goes through all the things left to him in the house. He eventually has it serviced and begins using it himself, finding that he enjoys the productivity and creativity of the work. In the end, all three story lines are wrapped up and tied off (pun intended) as we see how through time, each family and the decisions made at the time affect the lives of those that came after. I enjoyed the book, but confess to getting a bit confused at times. ... show more
