Description

An exhilarating tale of twisted desire, histories and homes, and the unexpected shape of revenge - for readers of Patricia Highsmith, Sarah Waters and Ian McEwan's Atonement It's 1961 and the rural Dutch province of Overijssel is quiet. Bomb craters have been filled, buildings reconstructed, and the war is well and truly over. Living alone in her late mother's country home, Isabel's life is as it should be: led by routine and discipline. But all is upended when her brother Louis delivers his graceless new girlfriend, Eva, at Isabel's doorstep-as a guest, there to stay for the season... Eva is Isabel's antithesis: sleeps late, wakes late, walks loudly through the house and touches things she shouldn't. In response Isabel develops a fury-fuelled obsession, and when things start disappearing around the house-a spoon, a knife, a bowl-Isabel' suspicions spiral out of control. In the sweltering peak of summer, Isabel's paranoia gives way to desire - leading to a discovery that unravels all Isabel has ever known. The war might not be well and truly over after all, and neither Eva - nor the house in which they live - are what they seem. Read more

  • surprising turns of the plot make for a riveting story
Beautiful writing and the characters are truly dimensional, especially Isabel. The intimacies seem more so than others I have read, making the reader at times feel voyeuristic. The book takes such a surprising turn , it takes one’s breath away.

  • Fantastic book -- read it blind if you can
I haven't been able to stop thinking about this book since I read it, and have recommended it to multiple friends. It's wonderfully written, gripping and compelling. I'm especially glad that I read it with no knowledge of what it was about, no idea where it was going, no expectations: it was a delight to be surprised at multiple turns where the book turned out to be something very different than I had expected. If someone recommended it to you, they know what they're doing -- just read it. At first I thought it started a bit slow, but in retrospect it did precisely what it needed to. Absolutely looking forward to what van der Wouden does next. (The audiobook version, by the way, is fantastically done. I usually don't like audiobooks much but the narrators were so perfect and did such a great job here that I think it might actually be the superior way to absorb this amazing book.) ... show more

  • Extraordinary
A gorgeously written story that is moving, sensual, and incredibly revealing of both time and culture. The twist halfway through is breathtaking and gives a whole new meaning to a book that shines on every level.

  • not what I expected
I was expecting a post WWII story and it was that only for the last 30% of the book. The other 70% was a love story. A fairly interesting love story, but a romance novel for the most part.

  • It kept my interest but . . .
It was a great debut novel but I would have liked to have seen some warmth come through in the main character, at least once. I felt she was so off putting it wasn't all that believable that anyone would be attracted to her. Or maybe we're meant to believe everyone in the book is cold hearted. There were some good twists in the story, though. ... show more

  • Indeed, a rare book.
The author of this beautifully crafted tale leads you through spiral until you find you are at the center of her tale, but it’s not yet the center of it yet as she takes you further. It is a simply told story but every word matters. Filled with longing, love and loss I spent hours more just thinking about the book and its characters, I’m certain you will too. I highly recommend you read this too, if you don’t like it I want to know why, because maybe I missed something? Or, maybe it wasn’t me… ... show more

  • Great character development
It might not grab your undivided attention until the 2/3rds mark, but clear your schedule when it does.
