“The Right Swipe is everything you want in a Summer read: fun, clever, and so, so sexy.” — PopsugarAlisha Rai returns with a sizzling new novel, in which two rival dating app creators find themselves at odds in the boardroom but in sync in the bedroom.Rhiannon Hunter may have revolutionized romance in the digital world, but in real life she only swipes right on her career—and the occasional hookup. The cynical dating app creator controls her love life with a few key rules: - Nude pics are by invitation only - If someone stands you up, block them with extreme prejudice - Protect your heart Only there aren't any rules to govern her attraction to her newest match, former pro-football player Samson Lima. The sexy and seemingly sweet hunk woos her one magical night... and disappears. Rhi thought she'd buried her hurt over Samson ghosting her, until he suddenly surfaces months later, still big, still beautiful—and in league with a business rival. He says he won't fumble their second chance, but she's wary. A temporary physical partnership is one thing, but a merger of hearts? Surely that’s too high a risk… Read more

  • adorable story with some important themes
Format: Kindle
Loved this book! I think the writing was beautiful and professional, and I loved the dual-character POV narration style. I will say, it feels like things built up pretty quickly at times, but that’s the point of fun love stories: a matchbox romance with a slow burn. Also like the it shows the progression of personal reflection, communication, boundaries, vulnerability, and so much more. Recommend it if you need a little vacation from your mind and want to delve in the interesting, whirlwind adventure of two characters with cutesy “millennial” twist to the story. ... show more

  • 4-stars: 'The Right Swipe' by Alisha Rai
Format: Kindle
I’ve been in a reading funk for the last two weeks, and I’m not sure why. I needed to get back to reading and picked up The Right Swipe by Alisha Rai for the #Romanceopoly2020 Challenge. It didn’t take me long to read the book, and it fulfilled the Drive-In Movie square. I originally had another book that I scheduled to read for that particular square, but The Right Swipe’s synopsis caught my attention. Female Protagonist: Rhiannon Hunter is the successful CEO of the Dating App – Crush. Rhiannon is what I would call a very stubborn but determined person. She is proven to everyone in the dating field that she knows how to revolutionize dating through her application. She has a silent partner that believed in her and helped her with her new company, especially after her old job. She may know all about dating, but she only does hook-ups every once in a while. She doesn’t do relationships because of what her ex put her through. Her ex is a douche, and he gets what comes to him in this book. I loved Rhi and determination but didn’t like how she handled certain things with Samson Lima. (I’ll get into that more in the storyline.) Her past ends up almost ruining her future with a fantastic guy. Male Protagonist: Samson Lima is a Former Pro Football Player who walked away from football after the league tried to play one of his friends after getting a concussion. He was a successful football player, especially after his father and his uncle also played pro-football. Samson is now helping his Aunt at her company Matchmaker after her partner (his uncle) and her sister (his mother) passed away. Samson is what I consider a caring individual because he takes care of everyone. I loved his character, and he’s the reason why I continued reading the story. Storyline: Rhiannon’s dating app is crushing the competition, and now she’s determined to buy out another App called Matchmaker. She is determined to have a meeting with one of its creators, but the creator keeps disappearing on her. She ends up going to a conference to have a meeting with the creator but ends up meeting the person that ghosted her a while ago. He promised he would see her again, but never got back with her. Now, Rhi is avoiding him, but she can’t for long because he helps his Aunt at Matchmaker. They end up working together, but Rhi wants him to help her with his Aunt, and Samson wants to prove he never meant to ghost her. Readers will find out the truth of what happened between Samson, and if you are like me, you may end up wanting to knock some sense into Rhi. Her past comes to light towards the end of the story on why she has trust issues, and I could understand her character better. Be prepared to meet her ex-boyfriend in the story. He is someone you are going to hate immediately. I loved the storyline of The Right Swipe and loved how everything came together in the end. Some small issues made me give the story only 4-stars. It was due to miscommunication and secrets. Otherwise, this was an enjoyable book. I look forward to the next book in the series. Steaminess: Some Steam. Standalone or Series: It’s part of the Modern Love series, but each follows new main characters. Each can be read as a standalone. Cliffhanger: No Trope: Brief Romantic Tryst. HEA: Yes. Would I recommend this book? Yes. If you are a fan of Alisha Rai’s previous books or you are a fan of Contemporary Romance stories. Some readers felt this was more of a Women’s Fiction story, instead of contemporary, which I could see why in certain aspects. There were some steamy moments between the characters, but it was not heavily steamy like other books I’ve read. Forewarning, there is some sexual harassment triggers and other triggers that could be sensitive to some readers. There are some powerful and supportive characters in this story that help each other through everything. I will say this, Rhi is one kick-butt character. ... show more

  • Just Okay
Format: Kindle
“But trust in relationships is like fragile glass. How can you build on a cracked foundation? How can you be sure you’re getting the turth? You have to protect your own heart. no on else will do it for you.” Rhiannon Hunter created Crush, a successful dating app, after she left her former company, Swype. She attended a conference, where she appeared on a panel alongside the new spokesperson, Samson Lima, for her company’s competitor, MatchMaker. MatchMaker is an online dating website, with an app, which has you fill out a 100 question questionnaire in order to be matched percentage wise with somene else. Rhiannon and Samson are no strangers; they met for a rendexvous months ago when Rhiannon used her middle name, Claire. Samson had asked to see her again and then ghosted her. After this conference, Rhiannon and Samson find themselves thrown together again as they make a limited, self shot, series about dating. In the meantime, Samson’s feeling for Rhiannon are growing stronger, but Rhiannon has trust issues. She has stated time and time again, she was only in it for the fun, nothing serious. Career wise, Rhiannon wants to buy Matchmaker. However, her old boss from Swype and also ex-boyfriend, wants to buy it as well. Rhiannon is afraid of him, as he has something on her. So what happens between Samson and Rhiannon, and what happens with Rhiannon’s business ventures? I didn’t love this book, and I didn’t hate this book. It was just okay for me. I thought that this was going to be a quick read, and then wound up taking me 4 days. I didn’t yearn to read it; I wasn’t itching to pick it up. I finished reading it so that I could move onto my next book. It left me rather bored. Rhiannon is a boss lady; a shark. I know that it’s supposed portray women empowerment, but it felt over the top. Rhiannon lacked depth. Samson lacked depth as well. I do realize the author gave him a story line that it supposed to be emotional, but the author’s writing didn’t tug at my heart strings the way other author’s have. Rhiannon is quick to write people off, without giving them second chances – no wonder she doesn’t have many people in her life! I didn’t geel the chemistry between the characters, so everything felt forced to me. The sex scenes were also written poorly, as if a teenager was writing them! I think my favorite part about this book was that there were a lot of good quotes! ... show more

  • Loved this book
Format: Kindle
The book has been on my radar for a long time and I'm glad I finally got a chance to read it. It was my first book by Alisha Rai but it definitely won't be my last> I was expecting a book about finding love through a dating app but this was so much more. Rhiannon is a smart, independent, stand-offish woman with trust issues.Samson Lima is a retired football player with a heart the size of a football stadium. She is the designer and woner of a dating app and he is the a bit of an online novice who is representing a more old-school dating match program. I was expecting a fun romance - which I certainly got but there was so much more. Rhiannon was forced out of her previous company because of sexual harrassment and then bad mouthed by her former boyfriend/ company owner. Samson is fighting the NFL over issues about brain injuries in football players. Both his father and uncle were found to have issues and he walked off the field into retirement over the treatment of a friend who had a concussion. Both are wary of love and have their own issues but watching them overcome their lack of trust to let someone in is an amazing thing. I am just glad to see that this is the first in a series because someof the secondary characters made me want to know more about them. ... show more

  • Contemporary romance that addresses important issues
Format: Paperback
|Thank you @avonbooks for the eARC #partner| Rhiannon (Rhi) Hunter is a tech industry mogul. She's independent, strong-willed, and isn't afraid to go after what she wants. She created a dating app that's doing very well and she has her sights set even higher -- on buying one of her competitors that's experienced a corporate shake up. She puts an immense amount of pressure on herself to be the best and do the best. She's in control of her emotions and doesn't put herself out there for fear of getting hurt. On the outside she looks like she's doing very well, but in my opinion, it's tough to be Rhi on the inside. When she reconnects with a former hookup, Samson Lima, Rhi is forced to deal with the negative feelings she harbors toward him. He's working for her competitor (the same one she's hoping to buy) so it's in her best interest both personally and professionally to make amends and learn how to work together. Things get complicated as Rhi and Samson realize they still have feelings for each other. Samson is ready to go all in for a relationship but Rhi has serious reservations and past traumas she needs to deal with first. I applaud The Right Swipe for addressing important issues like CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which is a neurodegenerative disease caused by repeated head injuries), the #MeToo movement, and being a female entrepreneur. The diversity in this book is amazing! The main character, Rhiannon is a black woman. One of her best friends is a plus sized Thai American woman who suffers from agoraphobia. Her other best friend (who's also her assistant) is an Indian lesbian. Samson and his family are Samoan. His two best friends are black and one of them is a stay-at-home dad. Awesome mix of characters, right? I really enjoyed the way the women empower each other in this book. I would love to see that spirit permeate our society and hopefully reading about it more and more will help bring it into existence. ... show more

  • Unapologetically beautiful
Format: Kindle
This read was a beautiful example of writing modern, empowered female characters who are unapologetic in their own power. To me, this book was the headiest romance out there. The ideal of a strong woman and an empathetic, vulnerable giant teddy bear of a man coming together with a deep understanding of each other’s baggage was impossible to put down. What’s not to celebrate: I am a sucker for a romance with a woman in STEM (hard to find) but also make her a POC, along with the male love interest and surround them with a supporting cast of real life viewpoints and I am in love. The writing and pacing were also excellent. I will definitely be reading more from Alisha Rai ... show more

  • Steamy & smart slow burn
Format: Kindle
This book deserves 4.5 stars, but there were a few story/character decisions that irked me. But first, the good parts! This is a dual POV between Rhiannon (Rhi) and Samson. I liked slowly peeling back their history, chemistry, and insecurities. They had a fun rapport and represented interesting dating ideas. I met my bf of six years IRL, but my parents met my steps online, and some friends have used apps. I liked the open discussion! The CTE football plot was really interesting, as was the subtle representation angle. The same can of course be said for the #MeToo story--it's just less surprising in a modern romance. Now, to my few issues: the background info. I enjoy when authors slowly reveal characters' backstory, but we shouldn't feel like we've missed a book at the start of the series. Katrina's past and Samson's family were both positioned as established info in this universe. While I'm interested to continue the series, those hooks shouldn't be laid until later. Oh yeah, and the sexy scenes were steamy and oh-so-consenting. ... show more

  • Really good read
Format: Kindle
I really enjoyed this book! It was such an easy read and felt like I was listening to a best friend telling a story. Our story follows Samson Lima and Rhiannon Hunter. They met under interesting circumstances and are thrown back with each other due to what they do for work. - The book has diversity, but not just for the sake of diversity. It feels like a real world. The portrait of LA the writer is painting is very realistic. - Samson really is a lovable character. By far, he was my favorite in the book. - The way the book is written feels very natural. I couldn't put it down. It didn't feel like the author was filling up pages with useless filler nonsense. The story felt engaging. - I wasn't much of a fan of Rhiannon herself because she seems incredibly cold; she almost seemed too cold. Her behavior and reactions are understandable, but she could wear on your nerves. Samson truly is a patient character, that's all I'll say. ... show more
