  • A literary ramble through a lush post apocalyptic sci-fi world
This book follows the tale of Ysmany, a bossy and shrewd pre-teen/teen of unconfirmed age, and the Ragpicker, a walking husk of cyborg/android gathering the digital remnants of his husband, as they travel across a lush post-apocalyptic world with a human infant that Ysmany kidnapped/rescued from Server. Fail on their quest, and they will be disassembled and added to the lampstack. Don't ask too many questions about this book. Just accept it for what it is. You don't want to end up on the lamp stack. Don't worry about what twitches are, just know that Ysmany has an unusual bond with them and they might pluck out your eyes or gently rock your baby to sleep. There are a lot of passages of slow, thoughtful exploration through a beautiful and vibrant landscape. There is a very noticeable lack of any type of useful exposition. Most of the time its fine, I don't love exposition either, but I honestly would have benefitted from more exposition. Even just a few sentences here and there to confirm the basics of the world we're in. The author made some bold choices with style, some that played out very well (I like the slow pace, the relationship between Ysmany and the Ragpicker, how Ysmany seems to have influence and connection with the twitches that both helps her society and sets her apart from them, how people took care of each other after the apocalypse) and others that didn't (again... I really really could use a few sentences of exposition here and there, and I nearly stopped reading the book entirely during the experimental theater portion. It was nearly incomprehensible on audiobook, maybe was more tolerable on print/ebook). Overall a memorable and pleasant read. ... show more

  • Intriguing adventure across a bleak post apocalyptic landscape
Series Info: This is stand alone book. Thoughts: This was good. It is set in a post-apocalyptic world and we hear from 2 POVs, the first being The Ragpicker, a twitch who is a remnant of past times and feared by all, and Ysmeny, a girl who is fleeing her village in hopes of protecting a baby that was born there. There is a portion that is told from a third POV in the second half of the book, which is a play that tries to explain how the apocalypse happens. I found this unnecessary, irritating to listen to, and confusing. This would have been better to include earlier in the book, or not at all. The reader doesn't really need to know what happened in the past, they can piece it together from the present. There are some things I really enjoyed about this book. I like how different the voices of Ysmeny and Ragpicker are at the beginning of the story and how Ysmeny's voice changes as she understands the Ragpicker better and better. I loved the irony of the story as well. We start near Ysmeny's home town and then go on a great journey only to find out that home may have been where the journey started. The way the Ragpicker talks is lyrical and wandering and it was interesting to try to parse it. The landscape is bleak but also strangely peaceful. I enjoyed piecing together how the world ended as we stumbled through the world as it was in the story. I struggled some with understanding what/who the Ragpicker was; I feel like I missed something here. I also didn't quite understand the enemy they were fleeing from mid-book. Were these humans that had gone insane, twitches gone wrong, or something else? The book ended very abruptly, although that also felt somehow appropriate for the story. In the end, this was different and I enjoyed it. However, I have always been strangely drawn to these post-apocalyptic survival stories about wandering desolate landscapes. If that's your thing, you will probably enjoy this as long as you don't mind some ambiguity. I listened to this on audiobook and it was well done. There were two narrators; one for Ysmeny and one for the Ragpicker. They both did a good job narrating. My only complaint was the difference between the two narrators was incredibly jarring (maybe that was the point but it made for jagged transitions). My Summary (4/5): Overall I enjoyed this adventure across the desolate post-apocalyptic landscape of a future Earth. The characters were well done and the books was well written. It does end a bit abruptly and somethings remained ambiguous throughout. If you enjoy strangely thoughtfully paced books about adventuring a post-apocalyptic landscape I would check this out. ... show more

  • Such a beautiful, mesmerizing book.
This book floored me. A dystopian novel with two unlikely companions. Ysmany is a young girl fleeing her community in order to save a baby from a military grade twitch (human who voluntarily chose a technologically advanced "secondskin" suit making them essentially hybrid tech/human) who leads the community and rids them of any perceived threats. She joins with another twitch, The Ragpicker, who is searching for his long lost husband. Well not the actual husband but perhaps he can find the husbands data and upload it to a syncable he has found. Together they cross a landscape filled equally with beauty and horror seeking refuge for Ysmany and the baby. Their travels will eventually take them back to Ysmany's community where both will have to sacrifice in order to survive. Such a beautiful novel of loss and connection, and finding a way to survive against all odds. ... show more
