  • Great Nilsson.
Nilsson's contributions are, to me, classic Nilsson. The entire record is sentimental and nostalgic, which is why I think Harry Nilsson participated from what I've read. If you want a modern, pandering presentation, stay away, but if you want a straight-up and somewhat sentimental Christmas record...get it. I loved Harry's rough voice, and his "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" is the best I've heard; my complaint is that it's too short. Some of the recording quality falls short, but you can overlook it. ... show more

  • Presence of Christmas, absence of Harry's voice
Harry Nilsson is one of my all-time favorite singers and this is one of his hardest recordings to find. Once finally finding your copy I guess it becomes a bit hard to admit that it's a big disappointment. It appears to have been recorded in the late '80s when Harry's voice was shot. At times it's almost painful to listen to. The stories are nice, but like any spoken word album, they get tiresome after a listen or two. So be aware of what you are getting with this album: Something you will listen to a couple times and then stick in the back of your collection to grow dusty. Still I am glad I have the album because it completes my Nilsson collection. ... show more

  • No amount of desire
I wanted to love this album. When I first heard about it, as a massive Nilsson fan, I was excited to acquire it. After all, I've told everyone I know that Harry Nilsson is the greatest vocalist of all time. Harry who? Well, if you're reading this, chances are you love Harry too. And you know that his albums could be patchy but, because they are Harry, they are all a treasure in the collection. Harry singing Christmas songs brings to mind the great singers, many of whom have recorded very successful Christmas albums. And, of course, Harry has the track record - his Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night, and it's less well known follow up, showed Harry can breathe new life into the classic old tunes. And so, that's what I anticipated - a Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Season. The slick orchestration, the perfect voice. And that would have been the perfect way, to end a perfect Christmas. However. While Nilsson's contributions are minimal, it would still have been worthwhile if those snippets were quality. Sadly, they are far from it. It's so bad it's almost embarrassing. Of course, the album remains in the collection, simply because every other Nilsson album is there on the shelf. But it will likely never be played again, because I choose to remember Harry at his best, not like this. This is an album that many Harry fans will not have heard of. In some ways, it's better left that way... ... show more

  • A Little Touch of Schmilsson for Christmas
The Presence of Christmas was originally sold on LP by mail order. The album of Christmas stories, produced by Harry Nilsson's cousin, included instrumental recordings of traditional Christmas songs. Later, Harry Nilsson recorded vocals over the existing orchestral recordings and the album was reissued as an "audiobook" and on CD. There is some charm to the stories and, although Nilsson's performances are uninspired, it's still great to hear him. An original Christmas song by Harry Nilsson is heard in Ziggy's Gift, an animated Christmas special with music by Harry's friend, Perry Botkin. -- Roger (harrynilsson.com) ... show more

  • Yeh! It's Bad But, It's Harry!
The stories are charming and Harry's voice was - let's just say - a bit rough but, it's still Harry:) I was happy to serendipitously find it mixed in with audio books at a local discount store. Even when not at his best, he's better than most.

  • Not knowing when this was recorded...
I don't know if this was recorded toward the end of Harry's life and I understand the criticism, but I too, love Harry and his baritone is robust in Joy to the World. And I love the narrations by Mr Heighley. It is a Christmas favorite and I listen to it several times during the season.

  • This ain't no book!
This cd contains narrations by Bruce Heighley wich are quite nice but superfluous for Harry Nilsson fans. The christmas songs performed by Harry are terrible. His voice is in bad shape. I think the songs are recorded just after the pussycats album. Harry damaged his voice during the recording of that album (thanks to John Lennon). If you are a true Harry Nilsson fan you must have this cd because it contains 5 tracks you can't get anywhere else. If you don't want to be dissapointed and want to have a nice christmas-cd than skip this one and buy the christmasalbum by Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, the Moody Blues, Steven Curtis Chapman or Neil Diamond ... show more
