  • Good plot and a even better ending
Very well written and held my attention! Good plot and a even better ending! I enjoyed reading this novel very much. This is much in the tradition of Richard North Patterson who keeps you wondering how this mystery will end and who the culprits will be! it was very easy read and difficult to put down once you got into the story! My accolades to Mr. Patterson for a well written and interesting novel. Charles Siegel M.S. Teacher of Math and Science ... show more

  • Gripping tale!
Because I am a big fan of Richard North Patterson, I read everything he writes. I was not disappointed with this one. We have a young lawyer, Adam, who is a Yankee; however, after law school, he accepts an offer from a fim in the deep South, Alabama, where his clients are quite wealthy and where he understands nothing about the culture. He suffers with trying to fit in and help his clients while trying to figure out what means what. His best frient, Henry, disappears after his wife's murder making Adam risk everything, even his life, to find his friend and save him from the electric chair. This search digs into the secret depths of the pastoral town with many surprises as Adam learns mor than he could ever have imagined. An "outsider" because of his background, he has a double-edged mission which is most inteeresting. You will love iot. ... show more

  • Interesting Book
I liked the mystery of the book. However, the characters were hard to follow (who's who). I think the characters could have been developed more. Also the ending seemed kind of abrupt like the writer ran out of time or something. I have read this author before and enjoyed him immensely. One of my favorite books is "Eyes of a Child". I just don't think this book was of the same quality as other books he has written. I feel that sometimes author's just want to get the book done and move onto the next one and I feel that takes away from the quality of the book. ... show more

  • Awesome!
This went back and forth between the story lines and I didn’t really figure out exactly who did what, or why - until the very end !! This ran upside down and sideways ! Loved it!!!

  • Don't shy away from reading this book simply because it isn't up to his later standards - it's still much better than most books
This early work by Richard North Patterson shows sparks of the brilliance which I think Mr. Patterson's later works display. Character development in this book is much less complex and thorough than in his future works, but you can clearly see the seeds of such development in this early work. My take on Mr. Patterson's subsequent works, written as a retired attorney, is that the plots he creates are complex but believable, and the development of the characters he writes about is compelling. This work doesn't measure up to his subsequent work, but it is entertaining, enjoyable and very readable. Don't shy away from reading this book simply because it isn't up to his later standards - it's still much better than most books of this genre. ... show more

  • He should have stayed outside
I'm actually a fan of North Patterson and consider some of his latest work to be amoung my favourites, it's actually interesting to see how much his writing improves and develops over a span of 20 years. Unlike some authors, like Jonathan Kellerman and Lee Childs who were brilliant from the get go, North Patterson has definately grown into his writing style. In my opinion a lot of his earlier work, like this one, is just not good. Some of the language was a little lost on me, I'm not sure if the strange wording was a reflection on the setting of the story (USA deep south) or whether my Aussie brain just didn't compute, but it was like some sentenances and dialog between characters was left unfinished. The story was actually boring in the beginning, (so much so I considered giving up) with not alot happening and weird character relationships and dialog, and it then finished in a rush of relevations that was mind boggling. I'll have to take North Pattersons word for the fact that all the dots were connected but I have the feeling he made some decent leaps. I was just too bored to be bothered to go back and check, maybe I read those bits when I dozed off. Snore... ... show more

  • A Generous 3 Stars
When I ordered this book, I didn't realize that it was one of the author's very early efforts. Thankfully, his writing improved immensely, later giving us "Degree of Guilt," Eyes of a Child," "Hostile Witness," The Spire," etc. "The Outside Man" is a somewhat intriguing murder mystery, with multiple potential suspects and a mildly surprising ending. The writing, however, is at times awkward. It is difficult to tell which character is speaking, and whether the event being described is current or a flashback. Also, I found the characters to be mostly unlikable and unsympathetic. Richard North Patterson has entertained me with many of his works and I highly recommend later books, including those mentioned above. This one just doesn't live up to his later standards.. ... show more
