This optional approach to the game helps you build the character you want while exploring Halcyon.Lead Your companions: During Your journey through the furthest colony, you will meet a host of characters who will want to join Your crew. Armed with unique abilities, these companions all have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. It's up to you to help them achieve their goals, or turn them to Your own ends.Explore the corporate colony: Halcyon is a colony at the edge of the galaxy owned and operated by a corporate board. • It's like Fallout but with a serious sense of humor
Platform For Display: Xbox One Edition: Standard
I didn't give this game much thought when I saw previews and reviews until it went on sale for $20 and I decided to give it a try on the recommendation from a friend who knows I love Fallout (I own every Fallout since the first one on PC many years ago!) and other similar RPG franchises. There's a decent amount of depth to character creation and progression, although I wish the level cap was a little higher as late-game weapons make quick work of even the largest, hardest enemies (the last boss I chewed through with a ~2000dps modded flamethrower that destroyed anything it touched). I have high hopes The Outer Worlds 2 will bring a lot of balance. The game itself is wonderful. The learning curve for some of the slow-time mechanics isn't very steep. The companions are all wonderful in their own way, with SAM being one of the funniest, despite being a cleaning robot. The dialog is excellent, littered with tons of humor and good jokes which were still enjoyable even in late-game. There are so many small differences in the endings (and SO many story arcs that your choices can make subtle differences in) and so many ways to play this game that its relatively short single player campaign (20ish hours) means you can play through in multiple styles and ways - either siding with the colonists, the Big Bad Corporation, or finding your own path. The "maps" are fairly small for a game of this kind, but that doesn't mean there's not lots of side quests to do (and you can certainly do them all, I sure did on my first playthrough). I never got tired of playing the game and never felt like it was grindy at all. The two DLCs are short and sweet, very pleasant and nice new environments to explore. If you like Fallout style RPGs with loads of replayability and different ways you can work through the game, definitely give this a try, it's a LOT of fun, and the aesthetics, swelling musical scores, and gameplay experience is an absolutely awesome mix. If you're unsure what I mean about humor, go check out the E3 announcement trailer for The Outer Worlds 2. It's one of the best announcement trailers I've ever seen for a game, and it's utterly void of any content at all. It's mostly a social commentary on the state of game announcement trailers, and it's hilarious and wonderful, and gives you a good sense of what this franchise is all about. :) ... show more

  • Fallout meets Borderlands and Bioshock
Platform For Display: Xbox One Edition: Standard
Fallout in space? Where do I sign up! There are a lot of reviews that say its short (IGN says 25 hours with side quests) but knowing how I play. it will take me longer as I explore a lot and listening for unusual dialog, usually before starting on the main quest. It plays a lot like Fallout and looks a bit like Bioshock and Borderlands, esp when looting or interacting with npcs. Character customization is similar to Fallout, and it looks like there is a wide variety of weapons, armor and misc equipment. Graphics are good and gameplay is smooth, anyone who has played any fps will be right at home with the controls. There are some interesting combat options like being able to slow time, a bit like VATS in Fallout, allowing you to take critical shots to cripple limbs on opponents. I don't know a lot about the story line in the few hours I've played, but the one fault that i can see is that it uses a similar setup to Fallout 3 or New Vegas with the weapon/armor repair. There are perks and skills that can minimize the wear and tear, but I really found that annoying in those games, it will probably be similar in this. NPC dialog seems to be interesting, but it does have a rather linear story line, like a lot of rpgs. Overall I'd say that if you like the 'open world' type games, this is worth a look, esp if you can get it used along with the DLC. or for a lower price since it's now a couple years old. I bought it new for $19, which is not bad imo, though I saw used copies going for as low as $10. So after only having this a couple days and putting about 6 hours into it, I think it will be pretty good and I'd recommend it. ... show more

  • One of the Best Games In A Long Time
Platform For Display: Xbox One Edition: Standard
What's Absolutely Perfect: 1. The writing is hilarious. The main creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky also made Fallout 1, 2, and New Vegas and it shows. One of the other writers also worked on Mass Effect and this shows in the lovable characters and loyalty quests. 2. The voice acting is amazing, especially Ashley Burch as Parvati and Dave Mitchell as Vicar Max. 3. Your choices have a serious impact on the story. You can play entirely good, entirely bad or somewhere in between. This isn't Mass Effect where you are just a meaner version of the hero, you can actually change sides and work for the bad guys. Being a bad guy has different quests, location order and dialogue. You can kill anyone with breaking the game or likewise do a pacifist run. What's okay: The combat is very basic. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it but nothing special either. It never feels clunky and the inventory system is nice. The maps are also smaller than open world games like Skyrim and Fallout 4. Some people have also complained about the length. I did very completionist run in about 60 hours, people not doing side quests have been known to complete it in a far shorter time. However it would require an additional playthrough with a differently aligned character to truly experience all the game's content. Personally I enjoyed the game at its current length. What could be better: 1. Obsidian does not have EA money and it shows sometimes, especially in graphics quality. If I could change one thing about this game it would be this. The lip flaps in a couple scenes are pretty bad. Normally I would deduct a lot for this but the writing and voice acting does a lot to make up for it. 2. No third person mode. I actually wonder if this game was originally meant to have one and it was cut for time/budget reasons, because the character creator lets you do a lot to change appearance. One good thing is that there's no head bob which usually makes me ill. Your mileage may vary: Be prepared for a lot of reading. This is an RPG like Mass Effect or Dragon Age where your responses can vary and have a lot of effect on the plot. It's also worth reading all the terminals in the game for additional story content. The religion in this game is not pseudo-Christianity for once, which is really nice if you care about that sort of thing. ... show more
