When I was a kid (the 80's) my mother and grandmother would spend the day go to different yard sales on Saturday afternoon. Being a record and comic book collector I would tag along. I found an original lava lamp from the 60's and it was awesome. The original yellow liquid and red lava. I had that thing up until a friend of my knocked it off the table and broke the tank. I was heart broken. I've had at least three other lava lamps since then that never quite matched the quality. After a long period of use the lave will break down and stop working right. It would float to the top and stay there. You should never leave the lamp on for more that 10 hours and I always stuck to that. The media could not be loaded. Would buy again and again... HOWEVER, (BUYER BEWARE) it is overall much darker than expected. The liquid is more of a turquoise/aquamarine shade which can seem murky with the light off. The wax in mine is a lighter shade of purple than in the image. As the liquid in the lamp thins and flows it bubbles into shades of purple, pink and even some green down near the light. I honestly do love it and I feel (in my opinion) that the colors remind ME of the colors of the northern lights and not overly fake bright color. I actually sat on this review for several weeks before typing it out. Honestly, I was initially disappointed as it didn't "look" like the photo. Tried the whole clearing up process without achieving the "photo look". So I sat and watched it every night and actually realized that I appreciate it more for the color it IS and how closely (in my opinion) looks like the actual muted colors of the aurora. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. Product is pretty low quality and unfortunately the color doesn't match either. The liquid isn't clear or blue at all, it's a murky green. I have run it through half a dozen heat and cool cycles and it stays cloudy. The wax is a nice deep purple and its the design of the lamp is nice and makes the wax look very good when flowing (assuming you can see it through the haze). Because the water is so cloudy in these lamps the light kind of just glows through the water instead of highlighting the wax. ... show more

I wrote up a very long detailed review which addressed pretty much every common issue that other reviews had, but Amazon rejected it. So here's the short version. I've got about 60 hours on this lamp and so far it works great. My glass is not damaged, the lamp doesn't appear to be used, the wax rises and falls properly, it hasn't exploded, etc. It just works perfectly and the color is gorgeous. The only problem I had is that the bulb that it shipped with only lasted 3 hours. Some people have recommended replacing it with a 35 or 40 watt bulb, but I would not recommend that. I replaced it with another 25 watt bulb and the wax cycles perfectly. I think a hotter bulb would just make the wax overheat and clump up at the top of the bottle. Either way, make sure you have some spare bulbs when you order this. ... show more

Ah, the original lava lamp! The original and the best. This particular unit is known as Aurora Borealis and at first I thought that was referencing the base of the unit because it is colored differently than I've seen before, kind of a swirl pattern. The magic however is what happens in a dark room when the lava lamp is operational. This particular combination of fluid color and "lava" color produces effects on the walls that mimic the Aurora Borealis. Very interesting looking lava as it seems to change color somewhat and by doing that it shoots bright beams if you will of green color onto the walls in an ever-changing pattern just like the Aurora. I've always loved lava lamps but this particular combination of fluid and wax offers a truly hypnotic effect in a dark room. To truly enjoy the effect to its fullest the room must be absolutely dark. Place the lamp about 6 in from the wall to enhance the effect. This one will not disappoint! ... show more

After reading lots of reviews and seeing the difference myself, it seems there's a quality control issue with this particular lava lamp. My first unit was cloudy, and the base was misshapen a bit. The sublimated design on the cap wasn't aligned properly, leaving a very visible seam. My second unit appears to be perfect. This is an expensive enough lamp that you shouldn't settle for a defective unit. If yours is cloudy, exchange it! The difference is dramatic. My replacement unit is much better all around - the base is perfect, the cap is perfect, and the liquid is reasonably clear. Other reviewers have posted photos of this lamp with even clearer liquid, so I'd say mine is probably about 90% perfect. As these lamps go, I really like this one, in spite of the QA issues. The media could not be loaded. I ordered for Christmas. When the recipient opened it, we plugged it in and it didn’t turn in. So, I exchanged it. The second one turned on, but after 3 hours and 10 minutes, you can BARELY see shadows of the wax moving because the fluid is so murky. Guess I’ll send this one back and try again. Update: Amazon replaced the lamp again and I finally got a good one. I bought multiple lamps as gifts and this was the only color combo that had this problem. Just know that it may take a few returns to get a good one, but a good one is super pretty!! ... show more
