  • Downgraded version of the NF "surge"
Size: One Size Color: Tnf Black (Past Season)
I ordered this bag because the "surge" I've had for several years is getting a little worn around the edges. Since it's used for my mobile office and is viewed by the public, and doubles as a day-pack, I thought a new one would look a little better. I was disappointed to find that NF changed the pocket adjoining the laptop sleeve so that it is webbed. This reduces its capacity and eliminates its use for hauling the legal sized portfolio that fits snugly in my current bag. NF also downgraded the two exterior zippers on the face of the bag. While they are larger and open more quickly, they are no longer weather proof as the ones on my current bag are. Anything in those pockets (e.g.: cell phone) will be soaked in a rain storm. All in all very disappointing. ... show more

  • Something is wrong with this bag...
Size: One Size Color: Tnf Black (Past Season)
I have a surge I got last year, which is grey. I wanted to get the same bag in black for hiking. I ordered this, but the pockets are not the same. The organization pocket near the front does not go all the way to the bottom of the bag the same way in the grey one. So, it’s not very good for organizing stuff because it is only about six inches deep. I’m very disappointed with this feature because you can’t really do anything with the pocket. North face, why and when was this changed? Did I receive a defective bag?? -update on 6/8/19- sent inquiry to both bags and north face with pick. I have not received a response in eight days from either company..... ... show more

  • It wasn't the same.
I have a previous version that was damaged, so sought to replace it. What I received is not the same bag I thought I was getting, although the product name is the same. The pockets are not the same, so when expecting to move items from one pocket to another, the pocket either was missing or of a different size. There is an additional pocket to hold a Kindle or something smaller than a laptop but the lip of the pocket aligns with the iPad pocket, making it difficult to slide something into it. I didn't even notice the additional pocket for a couple of weeks. Had I known of the reconfiguration, I would not have ordered it. ... show more

  • Great, quality backpack overall.
I like the backpack so far. Plenty of compartments and zippers. Seems like it's made of quality material that will last for years. After using it for a few days.... Previous backpacks that I have owned had a bit of a bottom base that would allow them to stand up on their own or at a minimum gently lean them against something to stand them up. That is not the case with this backpack. Be aware that because of the way the back padding extends down below the bottom of the pack, you will have to hang it up or lay it over on it's back. It will not sit upright on it's own. It would definitely be a 5 star product if not for this. ... show more

  • Great choice for everyday carry...with some drawbacks
Almost returned this bag and settled with the Osprey Cyber, but the NF Surge layout convinced me to stick with it. PROS - Ok interior organization - great overall layout and lots of accessible pockets - handle on the back face is convenient in many travel situations - deep and expandable main compartment can hold a ton of stuff - laptop fits perfectly in the pouch CONS - Too many straps!!! - sternum and waist straps are not removable - Build quality isn’t within a mile of the Osprey - Branding is annoyingly prominent - overall look is not as professional - side straps often get in the way when using the front and main zips ... show more

  • Durable, Roomy, and Rugged
Size: One Size Color: Tnf Black (Past Season)
What I like most about this bag (and the north face in general) is the durable quality and bold/rugged look. The materials feel much more durable and comfortable than Osprey’s lightweight and scratchy material. However, in my opinion, the north face never should have changed the front admin/organizational panel. This pocket used to go all the way to the bottom of the pack providing a ton of seemless space. Now however, in the Surge and Recon at least, this panel stops half way down the front of the bag causing a lack of space. There are two easy access pockets on the front bottom where the admin panel used to extend to, but these cause the bag to bulge out there when stuffed with gear making for an odd barrel belly look. I’d recommend that TNF bring back the full sized admin panel -that would make this the perfect bag. ... show more

  • Great backpack overall, but very uncomfortable when packed full.
Size: One Size Color: Tnf Dark Grey Heather/Asphalt Grey
I did a ton of research on which backpack to bring for carry-on only travel. After testing many bags, I went with TNF surge as it had every feature I needed, great organization, and was the perfect size. Overall, this was an incredible bag, it fit under the seat in front of me, had organization for tech gear and separate laptop and tablet areas. However, there was one fatal flaw that became apparent after only a few days of use: ***it was super uncomfortable*** The shoulder straps cut into my chest and wearing the backpack hurt my back immensely. This was when packed out at about 17 lbs. I since replaced this with a more proper hiking backpack of a similar size and it is very comfortable. My feeling is that this backpack is not designed for carrying heavy loads or being comfortable when fully packed out. The shoulder straps do not seem well designed, are very rigid, and lack load lifters. The back panel lays flat on the back, which is much less comfortable than a bag with some curvature, also the hip strap was entirely useless for moving weight off of the shoulders. If you are looking to get this backpack to carry a heavy load, I would look elsewhere towards brands that are more geared for comfort. (Osprey, Gregory, etc). and would recommend hip belts. Other than that, will likely use this as my daily carry when I'm done with my trip since I liked it a lot other than these issues. ... show more
