  • This review pertains to The Ninja Trilogy 4K release by Kino Lorber
Growing up in the 80's, I was introduced to the concept of ninjas thanks to a crazy trilogy of films entitled "Enter the Ninja" (1981), "Revenge of the Ninja" (1983) and "Ninja III: The Domination" (1984), from Cannon Films. While the films are unconnected story wise, they share the same Cannon Films qualities of bizarre plots including ninjas running around in broad daylight, even more bizarre casting choices, and crazy action set pieces that thrill and make you laugh in their sheer spectacle, lunacy and nonsensical nature. "Enter The Ninja" was released theatrically on October 2, 1981 grossing 15 million against a production budget of 1.3 million. It stars legendary Italian actor Franco Nero(!) as the lead ninja complete with a dubbed Texas accent. The incredibly beautiful Susan George thankfully goes braless throughout the entire film which was quite nice indeed. Martial arts legend Sho Kosugi plays the evil ninja and Christopher George portrays the husband of Susan George's character. The film was directed by Menahem Golan coming in at 99 minutes though it might have benefited by being tightened up by a few minutes as it drags ever slow slightly in the middle act. "Enter the Ninja" is complete exploitation trash that never pretends to be anything else than it actually is. Franco Nero clearly has no martial arts ability being obviously doubled by someone in the action scenes that does not resemble him at all. Susan George exists as pure eye candy with her ample bosom on full display in the majority of her scenes. "Enter the Ninja" is ridiculous to the extreme but all the more fun and memorable for it though it is my least favorite of the unofficial trilogy. "Revenge of the Ninja" was released theatrically on September 7, 1983 grossing 14 million against a production budget of 700,000. Sho Kosugi returns playing the hero character this time which has nothing to do with his character from "Enter the Ninja". Even more violent and over the top than the previous film, it features much improved action and overall esthetic quality thanks in large part to director Sam Firstenberg. The film had to be cut slightly to avoid an X rating in the United States. "Revenge of the Ninja" comes in at a lean and tight 90 minutes and there is never a dull moment. It remains a fan favorite and it is very obvious as to why whenever anyone watches it. "Ninja III: The Domination" which was again directed by Sam Firstenberg was released theatrically on September 14, 1984, grossing 7.6 million against a production budget of 2 million. This film is what happens when you combine ninjas and Flashdance with a bit of The Exorcist & Poltergeist thrown in to liven things up even more at a couple of key moments. The beautiful Lucinda Dickey stars alongside Jordan Bennett & Sho Kosugi who again plays a completely different character. This wonderfully ludicrous film is my personal favorite of the three having to be seen to be believed. Every time you think that you might have seen it all with "Ninja III: The Domination" seemingly not being able to top the insanity on full display throughout, the film somehow manages to reach even more absurd heights with each subsequent scene leaving the viewer's jaw on the floor while also laughing at the absurdity on display. When the opening action set piece involves a ninja, once again in broad daylight, running around a golf course murdering people, you know that you are in for something truly bizarre, special and entertaining. Fans of former actress Lucinda Dickey will also find a lot to like here due to while she does not do any nudity, her exquisite body is on full display thanks to a variety of tight outfits at various points in the film. I do prefer her shorter hairstyle in the two "Breakin'" films released in 1984, but she was a professional dancer at this time which is very appealing to me in terms of her overall physique. She actually delivers a fun performance with a slight knowing twinkle in her eyes while looking incredibly sexy. "Ninja III: The Domination" overall is a prime example of how Cannon Films would throw together what on paper seemed to be disparate elements that somehow managed to work as a whole in its own insane logic. The most infamous scene from "Ninja III: The Domination" involves the use of V-8 vegetable juice as an aphrodisiac. Kino Lorber had released both "Enter the Ninja" and "Revenge of the Ninja" on blu-ray twice before; the first being on a single layer 25 gigabyte disc and the second time on a dual layer 50 gigabyte disc with a higher bit rate and improved gamma levels. Scream Factory had previously released "Ninja III: The Domination" on bluray twice; once on a mostly bare bones edition followed by a wonderful collector's edition release loaded with new special features. Kino Lorber upgrades all 3 films to 4K UHD in their original 1.85:1 aspect ratios featuring 4K scans from the original camera negatives. Each film can viewed in either HDR10 or Dolby Vision; I watched each film in the latter on a LG C3 65" OLED by the way. Each film looks amazing in 4K with beautiful color, exquisite detail, natural grain and greatly improved contrast & black levels thanks to HDR10 and Dolby Vision. I would place a Vegas sized bet that all 3 films look better on this 4K release than they originally did in theaters. Each film is on a 100 gigabyte disc with bit rates often time staying in the 80's and low 90's so compression artifacts are nowhere to be seen. Each film also gets a remastered bluray in this set as well which house the bulk of the special features including commentary tracks while the 4K discs only have the commentary tracks. While the HDR10 grading on the 4K UHD discs looks terrific in its own right, the Dolby Vision grading does look better in terms of shadow levels and overall contrast. The uncut international version of "Revenge of the Ninja" is thankfully included in this release. Sound is presented in either 5.1 or 2.0 lossless audio. English subtitles are included for the hearing impaired. • Movies Are VERY Entertaining, but Amazon Price is Excessive
I saw all three movies already, and I can say that they're very entertaining (the 2nd one is probably the most competent one of the bunch, if I had to pick). As such, this 4K set is recommended if you want a set of 3 decent Ninja movies.

  • Good looking 4k, everything else is cheaply done
4k transfer looks great, but everything else is so cheap. It wasn't cheap either. They could have put more effort into the box and disc cases. The box is soooooo thin and cheap. It's as thin as notebook paper. Not even a cool special edition art on the cover. They just took the picture from the second movie and added it on the cover. The disc boxes are just some generic boxes with the original cover art. Nothing new or cool to commemorate the new 4k release. Movies look great, everything else is disappointing. ... show more

  • Amazon needs better product descriptions
It was not stated in the description that the DVDs were region 2. Meaning that the only play in the European market and not in America on our DVD players. Amazon needs to have a section separated from the rest of their products for stuff for other countries.
