  • A Dream‑Haunted Thriller That Blurs Reality
In this unsettling psychological chiller, Irene Trent finds herself trapped between love, death, and nightmare when her blind husband perishes in a mysterious laboratory explosion—and yet his presence continues to stalk her dreams and waking hours alike. As she navigates a world of luxury, isolation, and creeping dread, she begins dreaming of a mysterious lover and waking in fear that her husband’s reach has not ended with his life. Supported by an earnest performance from Barbara Stanwyck and given heightened tension by the unconventional pairing with Robert Taylor (her former husband), the film plays like a dark fairytale of desire, deceit and identity. Director William Castle trades his more overt “gimmick” style for mood and atmosphere, and the result is a moody blend of gothic fantasy, noirish paranoia and psycho‑melodrama. While the plot does stretch credibility and some twists come off as baroque rather than tightly constructed, the film succeeds in creating a hypnotic, dream‑like tone that lingers. For fans of vintage suspense, star‑driven horror, or the twilight work of legendary actors, The Night Walker remains a fascinating, if imperfect, cinematic journey into the shadowy border between fantasy and reality. ... show more

  • Interesting Mystery with a GREAT Score
I've enjoyed this atmospheric, engrossing film since first watching it on TV during the late 1980s. Vic Mizzy's score really makes the movie--sets the mood and is very catchy in an eerie, sometimes romantic way. The main title theme is especially good, as well as the narrated opening dream montage. The blu ray image is good, although a tad softer than I was expecting. Perhaps it was taken from an archival print, rather than from the camera negative. Nevertheless, this is probably the best the film will ever look in our hands, so I am happy to add this disc to my collection. ... show more

  • Maybe William Castle's best film?
A truly imaginative film which was unfairly neglected because it didn't make as much money as The Tingler and Castle's other more commercial films. But it has many scenes which are eerie and surreal, to the point that you may wonder if you dreamed the scene or saw it in a movie. That's what happened to me. It has low-key, moody black and white cinematography, and a great music score by Vic Mizzy who did the famous Adams Family music, but in this one did a really eerie score that was praised by the great Bernard Herrmann. The Blu-ray is beautifully done with vivid imagery. ... show more

  • Scares with Something Left to the Imagination!
This movie is a sleeper...but really worth watching! It has REAL scary moments and lots of atmosphere. The soundtrack adds to the mystery and menace! I wish they had it available as a DVD though!

  • Just OK...A lesser William Castle effort
This review is for the Blu-Ray edition of 'The Night Walker' released by Shout! Factory in 2018. This is a decent film but a lesser effort of the legendary William Castle. It was originally released in 1965 and is filmed in black & white. This release is meant for fans of horror from the time period in which it was made. BLU-RAY: The movie is shown in 1080p with a widescreen 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The picture is fairly sharp but it is not perfect. You can see small imperfections throughout. But overall, I think the picture is pretty good. EXTRA'S: There is a audio commentary with film historian Steve Haberman doing the honors. You also get a trailer and some stills. There are subtitles included with this release. PLOT/SUMMARY: Irene (Barbara Stanwyck) is unhappily married to a millionaire named Howard Trent. Howard is paranoid and thinks that his wife is going to cheat on him. Irene doesn't cheat on her husband but has romantic dreams about a mysterious lover. She also seems to be attracted to her husband's attorney, Barry Moreland (Robert Taylor). One night there is an explosion in Howard's laboratory and he is killed. Irene is the heiress but decides to move into her beauty parlor for the time being. While there, she continues to have dreams about her mysterious lover and dreams she marries him. She confides with Moreland and tells him she's not sure what is real and what is a dream. She makes a fateful decision to return to her late husband's mansion. PRODUCTION/COMMENTS: Filmed in 1965, this would be one of the last movies made by Universal in black & white. -This movie was written by Robert Bloch of Psycho fame. The screenplay was originally called "The Dream Killer." -The two stars, Barbara Stanwyck (best remembered from the noir classic 'Double Indemnity') and Robert Taylor were divorced many years before making this movie. Stanwyck was still very attractive at this time even though she was past her prime. - This would be Barbara Stanwyck's final film. She would however, appear on television. - Despite William Castle's reputation for gimmicks, there were none for this movie (at least none that I know of). RECOMMENDATIONS: I'm giving this release 3 stars. I kind of feel like old movies like this should be packaged together with another movie. But understandably, a profit needs to be made and it's good to have a Blu-ray release with all older movies. While not a great value, fans of the era will want to own it anyway. Recommended for 60's horror fans, fans of William Castle and fans of black & white horror/suspense movies. ... show more

  • A SOUNDTRACK REALLY BAD FOR THE NEIGHBOURS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT!...
This movie is about pure cinematographic genius in image quality and especially music and with the extremely gorgeous Barbara Stanwyck of course and her powerful vocal cords to say the least. The story is good but what makes this movie stand out from all others is the atmosphere that can only be created by an inspired creative mind, which is rarely the case. I recommend the movie to everybody, but don't pay attention to the childish amateurish introduction which lasts only a few minutes. That old Barbara is really both gorgeous and scary for her age I tell you! ... show more

  • The Night Walker:WIlliam Castle's best
The Night Walker is the best film William Castle ever made, in my opinion. It has intrigue, mystery, and probably the best "B" movie score ever composed. Vic Mizzy is a genius at writing scores and he proves it here. Barbara Stanwyck's screams are a bit much, so get your remote's volume button ready. But, also get the volume turned up for the scarier movie music in the film. It is great. If I could find the soundtrack I would purchase it. I love it, and the movie! ... show more
