Description

“I was completely captivated by Michael Callahan’s The Lost Letters from Martha’s Vineyard. It’s a history mystery you won’t be able to put down, with strong female characters and plenty of secrets. Plus, it takes you behind the scenes in vintage Hollywood and Martha’s Vineyard. A perfect beach read!”—Lisa Scottoline, 1 bestselling author of Loyalty and The Truth About the DevlinsA tantalizing novel of two women bound by blood but divided by a long-buried secret, and the island that holds the key to the fateful summer that changed everything forever. In 1959, Hollywood ingenue Mercy Welles seems to have the world at her feet. Far removed from her Nebraska roots, she has crafted herself into a glamorous Oscar-nominated actress engaged to an up-and-coming director…Until she shockingly vanishes without a trace, just as her career is taking off.Almost sixty years later, Kit O’Neill, a junior television producer in Manhattan, is packing up her recently deceased grandmother’s attic, only to discover a long-lost box of souvenirs that reveal that the grandmother who raised her and her sister was, in fact, the mysterious Mercy Welles.Putting her investigative skills to use, Kit is determined to solve the riddle of her grandmother’s missing life, and the trail eventually leads to Martha’s Vineyard.Mercy retreats to the island nursing a broken heart, only to be drawn to the roguish Ren Sewards, who is not just the simple oysterman he appears to be but a scion of one of the island’s wealthy founding families. With her attraction to Ren quickly growing, Mercy soon finds herself entangled in the intrigues of the tightly knit community and the secrets of the Sewards.Alternating between Mercy and Kit’s timelines, including excerpts from letters Mercy wrote the summer she disappeared, The Lost Letters from Martha’s Vineyard unfurls into a heart-stopping story of love, betrayal, and even murder. • Hollywood meets the East Coast of New England
Very entertaining read about the late 1950's Hollywood scene and a woman's quest to truly find herself in the "real world". I enjoyed the story very much and found the characters interesting along with the description of Hollywood vs Martha's Vineyard. There are many side stories that all wrap up neatly at the end. The book actually brought a tear to my eye at the end, as I really liked the main characters. Maybe a sequel? ... show more

  • Great Summer Read!
This book was a great summer read! For me it was a bit of a slow burn but once the drama got started I couldn't put it down. The story was well written and I was invested in both the present day point of view and finding out what happened in the past. Overall I enjoyed the book and would recommend!

  • Beautiful And Somewhat Heartbreaking!
After her grandmother passes, Kit is shocked to discover a secret her grandmother had kept from her family. Who was Mercy Welles and what happened to her? This book is a fascinating read as we are given a dual story, one in the present is Kit's story as she researches Mercy Welles and another nearly 60 years in the past as Mercy's story is revealed. The story is heartbreaking, yet beautiful. Kit's journey has a profound effect on her and in some ways finds her life mirroring Mercy's. I found the two stories to be quite emotional for me. I am very glad that I read this book and will likely read it again. ... show more

  • a wild journey, keeps you on your toes!
One of the best I’ve read in recent history. I love the characters. They were well developed and believable. An emotional roller coaster for sure.

  • Good Book, Not Great
I had high hopes after reading the summary and editorial reviews. It's a good read, nicely crafted and ultimately just meh. The plot has been done before and the characters are just a tad pat and predictable. And the ending is totally contrived, an unnecessary happily-ever-after closure for characters who would have been a lot more human in a different scenario. ... show more

  • Wonderful gift
I gave this book to my sister-in-law for a birthday gift because she just came back from a vacation, visiting Martha’s Vineyard. She said it was a great book!

  • a nice summer read … but it has its flaws
What’s with describing what all chapters are wearing The twists and turns in the last75 pages or so weren’t necessary It is like the author had to make the novel so long. Reminds me of recent movies : everything needs to be tied off and the writer doesn’t know how to end it or want to end it.
