Description

The book's ultimate goal is to ignite your passion for the kind of spontaneous, minimalist, and creative photography we admire in the works of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Joel Meyerowitz, and other great Leica photographers. This not a camera manual for the Leica M, nor is it a book that will teach you photography. Nevertheless, in Bertram Solcher's book you will learn a whole lot about your camera and how to use it, and about the art and craft of photography. This book contains a collection of illustrated essays that are meant to reveal the secrets of working with a rangefinder camera. To be more precise, with the best camera ever made. All Leica M model cameras, both analog and digital, use rangefinder technology. Because of its design, working with a Leica M requires a more methodical style of photography where the photographer must slow down and exercise attention and purpose. Using these cameras is both challenging and rewarding. With a Leica M, you can mingle discretely within your environment to capture candid, exciting, insightful images.Bertram Solcher, a professional Leica M photographer for over 35 years, demonstrates how to use this unique camera in a practical and effective way. Solcher's enthusiasm, substantial experience, and technical expertise will help you learn the skills necessary for creating masterful photographs with any Leica M camera. Read more

  • It's LEICA!!
Format: Hardcover
Ah, more Leica history. Outdated and needing an update but all the writers of books on Leica seem to have passed and no one is updating the original work.

  • Good set of general articles.
Format: Hardcover
More like an interesting series of articles on photography. Good photography, but not exceptional. If you want something on how to use a Leica M (what can you need to know that is not obvious?) this is not your book.

  • A personal memoir, not a useful reference
Format: Hardcover
Upside: a beautiful hardbound book of engaging physical dimensions with high-quality photo reproduction. A few useful insights and inspirations here and there (but too few). Downside: a meandering memoir of doubtful appeal to the Leica crowd featuring mostly amatuer tips and oft-mediocre images of uninteresting subjects, garish flash technique and lamentable, hyper-saturated blacks in B&W digital photography. In fairness, a few of the images are of artistic distinction. While the book is clearly a labor of love of the author's journey, the art of photography and the Leica experience, nothing can quite overcome its limitations. Not even the tie-in the Leica brand. Perhaps, a next book will vault into a truly compelling contribution to the unique aspects of rangefinder photography and its endless applications. ... show more

  • Soulful
Format: Kindle
Although this book is not specific to the M model it is a good testament about the company itself. I did not know that Leica specializes in street photography.

  • Not worth the read.
Format: Kindle
This book is more a diary than anything close to how to use a Leica M system. I barely learned from it. I was expecting more insights and tricks knowing that the photographer featured has 20 or so more years using a Leica M system. Not worth the buy. I wish I can return this. I felt robbed with this. Sadly. ... show more

  • Limited value
Format: Kindle
This little book would be more appropriately distributed as a Leica marketing brochure. Don't expect to come away with any more than a glimpse at the capabilities of a Leica M with 35, 50, and 75mm lenses. The quality of the images in the Kindle version are not very good (I have not seen the print version). It would be nice to have a link to the author's published portfolio to fully appreciate the points that he is trying to make. ... show more

  • Loved it
Format: Kindle
This is a book about photography - it's not a supplement for any Leica camera _ rather, the author explores photographic ideas in the context of Leica! Great job - I bought the Kindle version to read and after reading it, I want the printed version too. Excellent book!

  • An interesting book.
Format: Hardcover
I like this book. It is a sort of how to book combined with a selection of photographs taken using the Leica M rangefinder system.
