  • Best place I've found to start in the new world of RED!
I wanted the RED ONE ever since I heard about it. I put in a reservation, but when my number came up I couldn't afford it. So I've been shooting on the Canon 5D Mark II. Since Scarlet is coming out I've been saving my money and I'm ready to jump into the world of RED! I've tried to learn as much as I can from every source I could find about the RED ONE and the technology around RED, and this book has been my best source for knowledge. It's probably not for well versed professionals, but for independent filmmakers who are looking to get Red Ones, Scarlets or new comers, I can't recommend it enough. ... show more

  • Excellent Book!
Purchased it to prep for a film on an unfamiliar camera. This book is far more detailed and explained better than the factory instructions. I highly recommend it if you are planning on using ANY RED camera model. Quite a bit directly translates.

  • Quite Helpful
I found this book quite helpful. Let me communicate that I am a newbie. I think this book was perfect for my purposes. It provides a sense of the capabilities of the Red. This book also provides an overview of all the various elements that you will need to consider when choosing to use the Red. I particularly appreciated the lenses and the audio sections. This book covers a lot. My only wish would be that it covered even more in depth. However, I appreciate what I have learned from this book. ... show more

  • Great book for laymen like myself.
Got a gig post supervising a movie that was shooting on RED and editing on final cut. Coming from the studio system I've only worked on AVID with no experience on RED. This book helped me get up to speed. I love how the author included the history of how RED came about as well as interviews from established industry players. Bought the kindle version. It lives with wherever I take my phone. ... show more

  • Good book for overall introduction to the RED
Noah has created a wonderful book that helps introduce the world to the amazing camera, the RED One. If you are new to the camera or are interested in how it works, this is THE book. Presented in a very clear, logical and orderly manner, the book takes you through the history and development as well as the actual operations of the camera system. The RED is truly revolutionary and has created a tidal wave of emotion throughout the film industry. ... show more

  • Good for newbies, waste of time for pros.
If you are new to production (student)this book is a good primer on a lot of very basic information. If you are a seasoned professional looking for some in depth information on the idiosyncrasies of the Red One, than this book is a waste of time. I don't think there's any more practical information than what can be learned from Red's documentation. As a working professional I wanted to see workarounds, solutions to everyday problems, fast tips on error codes, etc. Basically I was looking for some out of the box solutions from production through postproduction and this book read more like a product brochure than anything else. For example, there is a blurb on lens mounts. They exist. If this is the ultimate guide it should have gone into the importance of collimating the mount- PL, Nikon, and any other, as you switch them around. Doing it in the field. Practical working solutions. This book had none of that information. ... show more

  • A Little Bit Of Knowledge
When I ordered this book, I was really hoping for "the ULTIMATE" guide to the Red camera system. You know, something that would explain some of it's quirks or how to get the best out of it under varied lighting conditions or even some discussion into the technical aspects of the camera beyond where in the menus you can find the settings for Zebra Stripes. While Noah Kadner is obviously an expert with the camera and its support systems, he provides very little insight for working professionals. Even the First Person POVs at the end of the chapters are little more than anecdotes about working with the Red camera system. On the other hand, if this is your first time working with advanced video acquisition systems and specifically the Red, then this book is definitely for you. The book does presume you have the most basic of technical proficiency with digital cinematography; mostly to understand its terms, but even that is dealt with by providing a simple glossary in the back. I feel the strength of this book is to provide a quick "up and running" guide to working with the Red camera and its peripherals. It also competently explains the integration of those support systems to provide a comprehensive review for the choices we face in post-production when you acquire your footage with the Red camera. Ultimately, if you are a working professional, you'll find more resources and technical information by spending the time it takes to read this book at the Red and Red User websites...as even Mr. Kadner suggests. ... show more
