Description

A Seattle Times Bestseller One of The Washington Post’s 10 Noteworthy Books for January One of The Los Angeles Times’ 10 Books to Add to Your Reading List in January One of The Seattle Times’ 24 Books to Look Out for in 2025 One of Kirkus' Best 20 Books to Read in January The extraordinary new novel by Jonathan Evison, about a married couple in their golden years, from when they met across big ups, deep downs, and survive-it-all, opposites-attract love Abe Winter and Ruth Warneke were never meant to be together—at least if you ask Ruth. Yet their catastrophic blind date in college evolved into a seventy-year marriage and a life on a farm on Bainbridge Island with their hens and beloved Labrador, Megs. Through the years, the Winters have fallen in and out of lockstep, and from their haunting losses and guarded secrets, a dependable partnership has been forged. But when Ruth’s loose tooth turns out to be something much more malicious, the beautiful, reliable life they’ve created together comes to a crisis. As Ruth struggles with her crumbling independence, Abe must learn how to take care of her while their three living children question his ability to look after his wife. And once again, the couple has to reconfigure how to be there for each other. In this bighearted and profound portrait of a marriage, Jonathan Evison explores seventy years of big moments in subtle ways, elegantly braiding the Winters’ turbulent history with their present-day battles, showing us how the oddly paired college kids became parents, fell apart and back together, andgrew into the Abe and Ruth of today. Endlessly heartwarming and moving, The Heart of Winter is a reminder that true love lives in small, everyday moments. Read more

  • The Story Of A Marriage
Format: Kindle
This is the story of a long marriage. They shouldn't have lasted as they are so different. Abe is grounded, practical and logical. He ends up selling insurance and has his own agency. Ruth is artistic and creative and longs for culture. They have almost nothing in common but we pick up the story when they have been married for over seventy years. They have raised four children and even been through the absolute worst thing, the loss of a child. Abe has adored Ruth from the start. He ends up on an island in Washington because there he can give Ruth a farm where she can garden and raise the children. Over the years, they ebb and flow, sometimes at a distance when Ruth starts to find Abe boring, closer when they need to handle a crisis. The story picks up when Ruth is diagnosed with cancer. The grown children insist that Abe is too old to take care of Ruth after extensive surgery, chemo and radiation but he is just as insistent that he can and Ruth wants his comfort and her own home. They have always thought Abe would go first, but is that true? Jonathan Evison is an American author who lives in Washington like Abe and Ruth. I could really relate to this novel as my husband and I have married for fifty-two years now. Evison gets the reality of a day to day relationship and how couples can grow closer as they age and how successful marriages adapt to a crisis that every marriage eventually faces. I loved the way Abe adored Ruth from start to finish. This book is recommended for literary fiction readers. ... show more

  • So This is Love
Format: Kindle
Linda Hutchinson: Linda Hutchinson: check netgalley tomorrow Linda Hutchinson: The Heart of Winter Author: Jonathan Evison Source: Netgalley Publication Date: Jan. 7, 2025 The Heart of Winter is one of those unassuming and heartfelt gems that tell a simple story that reminds us of the beauty of the written word and the wonder of a long marriage. Nothing is sugar coated and yet it is a sweet affirmation that through highs and lows, ups and downs, a bond made when young can weather the trials of time. The story starts with Abe’s 90th birthday party and moves back and forth over the years of his 70-year marriage to Anne. Life is hard but a look back can show you that life is good when you spend it with someone you can trust to be loyal. The author writes: “Time did not march on methodically, minute by minute, day by day; it sprinted away from us in mad bursts, a thief in flight.” Our end is inevitable, our living is by choice.” Live well my book friends. #fiction #romance #marriage #family #adult #life #death #cancer #faith #future #trust #forgiveness #love #always love #theheartofwinter @jonathanevison @dutton ... show more

  • a sobering look at marriage
Format: Kindle
This book left me feeling sad and yet hopeful. The story is of a long marriage, their deep connection despite their differences and the events that almost tore them apart. But it was an honest account of every marriage and every life, full of heartbreaks that bring out the strength we need to go on.

  • A long-standing marriage, its ups & downs, and all the in-betweens
Format: Kindle
Fictional characters whose meet-cute was more like a meet-dislike yet they went on to marry (this isn’t a spoiler). And stay married for some time. Abe and Ruth couldn’t be more different from each other. He’s set in his ways, rigid, buttoned up, Republican to her dreamy, feminist, poetry-loving, liberal, adventurous ways. They meet as students at UW in Seattle on a blind date, he’s head over heels, she’s not. Fast forward, they marry, eventually settling on Bainbridge Island where they bought a farm, built a life, raised their family, Abe’s career took off while Ruth raised their four kids, took care of the farm, got involved in her church. The years pass, the Winters have now been married 70 years, they’ve endured a lot, an incident shatters their family, even sends shockwaves through their marriage. Through decades, they remain married, their children grown, old in fact, grandchildren, even great grands. Now, in a new phase in their lives, a medical crisis arises, the adult children step in believing they know what’s best for their parents and once again, there is upheaval and routine interrupted. There is more to life than the good home Abe provided for his family and before he knows it, time has escaped him. In between, there are betrayals, secrets, deep loss, the kind you don’t bounce back from. This is a story to read slowly, it’s a lot to absorb, after all, it’s a lifetime. ... show more

  • Beautifully written story-
Format: Kindle
I loved this book- the story of a couple and how their lives progressed and changed throughout their lifetimes- with sadness and joy, growth, collaboration, forgiveness and change...but lives well lived. Ending was bittersweet and perfect.

  • Very relatable
Format: Kindle
I have never been a fan of books that skip back and forth, but it worked in the story. One of the best stories about aging together especially in this day and time.
