Description

A 1 LIBRARYREADS PICK! AN INDIE NEXT PICK! DELUXE EDITION―a gorgeous hardcover edition featuring beautiful mint green sprayed edges! New York Times bestselling author Sarah Beth Durst invites you to her new standalone novel set in the world of The Spellshop! Follow her to The Enchanted Greenhouse, a cozy fantasy nestled on a far-away island brimming with singing flowers, honey cakes, and honeyed love. The hardcover edition features beautiful sprayed edges. Terlu Perna broke the law because she was lonely. She cast a spell and created a magically sentient spider plant. As punishment, she was turned into a wooden statue and tucked away into an alcove in the North Reading Room of the Great Library of Alyssium. This should have been the end of her story . . . Yet one day, Terlu wakes in the cold of winter on a nearly-deserted island full of hundreds of magical greenhouses. She’s starving and freezing, and the only other human on the island is a grumpy gardener. To her surprise, he offers Terlu a place to sleep, clean clothes, and freshly baked honey cakes―at least until she’s ready to sail home. But Terlu doesn’t want to return home, and as she grows closer with the unwittingly charming gardener, Yarrow, she learns that the magic that sustains the greenhouses is failing―causing the death of everything within them. Terlu knows she must help, even if that means breaking the law again. This time, though, she isn’t alone. Assisted by Yarrow and a sentient rose, Terlu must unravel the secrets of a long-dead sorcerer if she wants to save the island―and have a fresh chance at happiness and love. Funny, kind, and forgiving, The Enchanted Greenhouse is a story about giving second chances―to others and to yourself. Read more

  • SO GOOD!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - 5 stars!! (SUCH AN AMAZING READ) Let me start off by saying that Sarah Beth Durst's writing is so, so magical! I want to escape into the world that she has created! The Enchanted Greenhouse takes place in a magical, whimsical, cozy new island set in the same world as the Spellshop! For this book, I actually got to listen to the audiobook with an advanced listener copy! 🎧 The narrator, Caitlin Davies has a voice that transports you into the novel in your head while you're listening. I really enjoyed her as a narrator, she was able to capture each character's tone and personality (there are a lot of people and PLANTS 💚 in this story). Our FMC, Terlu, a sunshine ex-librarian was turned into a statue after illegally creating a sentient spider plant, Caz, who we met in SBD's first book, the Spellshop! Our MMC, Yarrow, is a grumpy gardener who is taking care of the island and its inhabitants (lots and lots of plants!!). We get to meet lots of new friends along the way (more sentient plants, including a sentient rose named Lottie 🌹 - she's adorable, and a flying cat named Emeral)! One of my favorite lines from the book is "You don't let anything dim your light." It was a little tough to capture more moments when listening to this so I know there are more that I will have when I actually read the physical book one day! I loved, loved, loved all of the little Easter eggs and connections with the Spellshop and I hope that she writes a book with crossovers characters from the Spellshop and the Enchanted Greenhouse! I need a reunion story between Terlu and Caz!! Sarah Beth Durst might become an auto-buy author for me! BIG thanks to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio, and Sarah Beth Burst for this advanced listener copy!! ... show more

  • charming cozy fantasy
THE ENCHANTED GREENHOUSE is a delightful cozy fantasy with a touch of romance. Terlu was a librarian punished for casting a spell to create a friend when she became lonely in the stacks, sentenced to be a statue and an example to anyone who is not a licensed sorcerer and dares to do a spell. She had created Caz, the delightful sentient spider plant from the first book in the series. Now, she is awoken by a lone man on an island of intricate greenhouses, who had sent a request for a sorcerer's help to the capital, and received her and spell ingredients instead. Yarrow has been alone, tending to the multitude of plants that exist in these enchanted greenhouses for a long time. Since the wizard who had created them died, they have been failing and the plants dying. With Terlu afraid to break the laws again, she is hesitant to cast any spells - but there are sentient plants on this island too, and they will not live without her. This was an overall really engaging and cozy story that sweeps the reader away to this distant island with a gruff and quiet gardener - who begins to open up and show the depth of his feelings later in the story. I loved his character, and I found Terlu to be a sympathetic character, and it was easy to cheer for them together. The romance is slow-build and background to the main mysteries of the sorcerer's spells and what is happening to the greenhouses. The story keeps a pretty good pace and has a solid variety of characters with the two main humans, but also sentient plants and the sailor who visits for supplies (I am hoping she'll be the lead in the next book! I already love her). The middle and towards the end did feel a bit repetitive and slow, but the ending was satisfying overall. The story is told from Terlu's perspective, and I would have loved to get into Yarrow's head more, particularly towards the end when he is dealing with his own struggles. The plants and animal characters also have quite the personalities, reminiscent of the first book, and I love that these strong themes carry across stories, helping to connect them further. Other small elements also bring up the first book, keeping them in mind with a teensy bit of an update for lovers of the first book (like me!). Overall, THE ENCHANTED GREENHOUSE is a charming and lovely cozy fantasy that I really enjoyed. I cannot wait to see where else this series will take us! Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own. ... show more

  • Loved it!
Terlu Perna was a librarian at the Great Library of Alyssium. She was lonely and created a sentient spider plant. In order to do that, she used magic which was against the law and as punishment she was turned into a statue and placed in the library. At some point years later, she woke up in a strange place. The only other person there was Yarrow, who was a gardener. This story is so sweet, heartwarming, entertaining and magical. It’s all about second chances both for Terlu and Yarrow and many others. Seeing how they worked together to solve the problem of the failing greenhouses was wonderful. I love how they were respectful of the plants and asked for their help and how it highlighted how everyone - the people, the plants, and the animals all wanted to find their place and feel useful. This was definitely a heartwarming story. Caitlin Davies did a great job narrating. She had to voice male and female characters as well as the sentient plants. It was very easy to listen to. Thank you to the author, Macmillan Audio, and NetGalley for the Advanced Listener Copy (ALC) copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review. ... show more
