Description

The 6:20 Man is back, dropped by his handlers into a small coastal town in Maine to solve the murder of a CIA agent who knew America’s dirtiest secrets—can Travis Devine uncover the truth before his time runs out? When CIA operative Jenny Silkwell is murdered in rural Maine, government officials have immediate concerns over national security. Her laptop and phone were full of state secrets that, in the wrong hands, endanger the lives of countless operatives. In need of someone who can solve the murder quickly and retrieve the missing information, the U.S. government knows just the chameleon they can call on.Ex-Army Ranger Travis Devine spent his time in the military preparing to take on any scenario, followed by his short-lived business career chasing shadows in the deepest halls of power, so his analytical mind makes him particularly well-suited for complex, high-stakes tasks. Taking down the world’s largest financial conspiracy proved his value, and in comparison, this case looks straightforward. Except small towns hold secrets and Devine finds himself an outsider again.Devine must ingratiate himself with locals who have trusted each other their whole lives, and who distrust outsiders just as much. Dak, Jenny’s brother, who’s working to revitalize the town. Earl, the retired lobsterman who found Jenny’s body. And Alex, Jenny’s sister with a dark past of her own. As Devine gets to know the residents of Putnam, Maine, answers seem to appear and then transform into more questions. There’s a long history of secrets and those who will stop at nothing to keep them from being exposed. Leaving Devine with no idea who he can trust... and who wants him dead. Read more

  • It kept me guessing throughout the entire mystery!
This is one of the most engaging thrillers I've read in a long time, and it was impossible to anticipate what would transpire next. Baldacci has written many books. In that regard, it seems that prolific writers tend to get worn down with the deadlines, etc., but not Baldacci. This is one of his finest works. The character development, the location settings, plot development, language and tone, were all spot on. In all of his books, I found most to be quite remarkable, and this is no exception. I noticed almost no errors in editing, which is the sign of a really great editor too. My only issue, when reading mysteries in general, is when something challenges my belief factor, to the point of making me aware I'm reading, instead of actively involved in a real-life saga. In this particular case, he often has his characters frequently using each other's names in conversation. In my experience, I've found very few people who actually do this consistently. So for me, it seems highly unlikely the characters in this book would do so either. Other than that one minor issue, I enjoyed a marvelous read! It also made me smile when he used the name Baldacci for one minor character. This author is exceptional in his ability to consistently produce high quality mysteries. ... show more

  • Good, but not the best Baldacci
I’ll read anything by David Baldacci — he’s one of my definite “pre-order and read first thing” authors. So I bought the new one, “To Die For,” and as I was reading it, it struck me that I hadn’t retained ANY DETAILS about the previous novel in the series. Huh? So I decided that, before I continued the new one,I’d have to go back and re-read the previous entry in the series. What I’m coming to understand this time through is WHY I didn’t retain anything: there’s nothing there to retain. The characters are wooden and one-dimensional, the dialog reads like the chatter from a third-rate video game when you need to question everyone in town to get to the truth about the murderer. Wooden, lifeless dialog .Lifeless, stakes-free motivation from the primary protagonist. I remember reading it, but I don’t remember any of the details. No interesting plot points. Nothing to hang a memory on, or recall the excitement of reading it. But at the same time, you’re guaranteed a good time: It’s David Baldacci, for heaven’s sake. He can put sentences together like a consummate professional. Think of it like any recent movie starring Nicolas Cage. Awesome, watchable, exciting in the moment. But ultimately forgettable. Bottom line: if you’re a completist, then you need to buy and read this. (Probably at least twice.) If not, you have my blessing to skip this one. ... show more

  • One of the best Baldacci
This is one of the best Baldacci. In spite of having a rather uninteresting protagonist (Travis Devine is sort of a cut rate Jack Reacher) this book has a lot of action scenes and good secondary characters. Devine is tasked by Washington with going to the small Town of Putnam Maine to determine whether the death of a female CIA agent was due to international intelligence causes, or was a strictly local affair. Devine is not very welcome in Putnam. The police think he is big footing their investigation, and a lot of the locals have something to hide. There is also a subplot of international terrorists trying to do Devine in.. Does this have anything to do with the agent's death? Complex and fast paced, fans of Bald acc I will not want to miss this one. ... show more

  • Baldacci is back!
After a diversion into "I don't know where" with Simply Lies (the only Baldacci novel I have ever dropped down to three stars), he has hit it out of the park with The Edge, and the continued adventures of Travis Devine (The 6:20 Man). This novel starts right out with action, and continues non-stop for 406 pages. The setting for most of the novel is a small town on the coast of Maine (Putnam). A CIA operative has been killed and Devine is sent to investigate as to whether her death is related to her work at the CIA, or to her family's past. As usual Baldacci provides plenty of local color and has his well-developed characters play their parts in this novel with unexpected plot twists galore. As with most current novels, there are a couple of grammatical errors. On page 85 the author writes "They did find her purse with her wallet in it. But no laptop or phone." Since the second sentence is written as a negative, the author should have used "nor" rather than "or". That sentence should have read "But no laptop nor phone." Also on page 217 Baldacci writes "Load the body in the van and bring it to the funeral home" - since the person speaking was not at the funeral home, the word "take" should have been used, rather than the word "bring". You "take" something from one place to another, but you only "bring" something if it is being transported to your location. The sentence should have read "Load the body in the van and take it to the funeral home." Also, I would have used the word "into", rather in "in", but that is just to be more accurate. Yes, these two grammatical errors are minor, but I expect better from an author such as David Baldacci. Still a very enjoyable 5 star novel and certainly worth reading, but be sure to read The 6:20 Man before you read this one. ... show more
