Description

Perfect for fans of Kate Carlisle and Victoria Gilbert, when a body is found in a hardware store, will Dawna Carpenter’s sleuthing measure up to find the killer? Recent sexagenarian widow Dawna Carpenter thought running her own hardware store after the death of her husband was hard enough. With her adult daughter, April, moving back into town, and Darlene, the annoying boutique owner next door to her shop poking around, Dawna has her hands full. But when she finds a dead man in the bathroom of her store, with a framing hammer by his side, she’s in way over her head. The victim, Warren Highcastle, was a land developer who was looking to purchase the old theater in town to build a new hotel. Dawna and April, worried about the implications of the crime scene at the hardware store, put themselves on the case. They soon learn that Warren had made quite a few enemies in his short amount of time in town. As the suspect list starts growing, so too do the threats against Dawna and April. Can Dawna and April nail the killer before they strike again? Read more

  • Fun Small Town Mystery
I really enjoyed this book. The characters in this cozy mystery are likeable. Dawna, the main character, is a widow who runs the hardware store started by her husband. She finds the dead body of a disagreeable developer dead in her store bathroom, so she and her adult daughter, April, want to find out who killed him. More murder and mayhem ensues. While there are clues throughout the book, the pacing feels just right, so the reader discovers the murderer at the same time as the amateur sleuth. The story is set in a small town in the Pacific Northwest. This is a fun small town cozy! ... show more

  • Great new cozy mystery series!
While recent widow Dawna Carpenter is busy running her family’s hardware store after the death of her husband, she is glad that one of her grown children (her daughter April) has moved back to town. Along with her business, dealing with annoying shopkeepers and her volunteer work in the community, Dawna doesn’t have much free time. Then everything changes when she finds the body of a man in the bathroom of her store. And this isn’t any man–it’s Warren Highcastle, a new to town land developer who was ruffling feathers with his purchase of the old theater in town. He didn’t care for the historic significance of the building; his plans included tearing it down and building a hotel. Dawna and April aren’t just worried about the loss of business while the store is shut down during the investigation, they are also worried about the impact the murder will have on future business. The sooner this investigation wraps up the better, so Dawna and April take a deep dive into the background of Warren and begin coming up with suspect after possible suspect. Despite the threats against Dawna and April that appear on the screen door of their kitchen, they won’t give up. It is simply so much fun to get in on the ground floor of a new cozy mystery series and Hammers and Homicide was a wonderful start. I had no idea I’d enjoy the setting of a hardware store, but I loved the details Charles added to the story–I felt as if I was in the store with Dawna. Dawna is a wonderful sleuth–in her mid sixties, secure in who she is and determined to find the good in all. Her relationship with April was inspiring and enjoyable–there are truly some laugh out loud scenes. I love a character with a good sense of humor. I was not expecting the paranormal moments sprinkled throughout, but I certainly welcomed them! They gave the story so much heart. The idea that loved ones who have passed away are part of us and looking out for us provides great comfort to this reader. There was a warmth in those moments in the story that made me smile, all while I was trying to follow the clues to uncover the villain. I am certainly looking forward to reading further in this series. ... show more

  • Lovable Sleuth
Hammers and Homicide is the perfect summer cozy mystery (or to be read in winter when you're desperate for that summer feel). Dawna Carpenter is a widow running the hardware store her and her deceased husband shared when a high-falutton outsider who is trying to buy the Emery Theater in her small town ends up murdered on her stores property. With the help of her daughter, April, Dawna sets out to find the truth, only to put herself right in the pathway of the murderer, but as a reader you'llbe guessing until the very end of who that might be. This story is filled with lovable small town characters and charm, a perfect sprinkle of spectral visitors, but I warn you now, by the time you're done you'll be really hungry for at least 3 different kind of pies. ... show more

  • Decent Cozy Mystery Debut
Dawna Carpenter is a widow and owner of Carpenter's Corner Hardware and Building Supply in Pine Bluff, Oregon. Missing her husband, she still feels his presence and talks to him about her escapades. A paranormal element was a nice addition. Dawna's daughter, April, has recently returned to Pine Bluff after many years away. When a murder occurs at Dawna's shop, Dawna and her daughter, April, are on the case to resolve the mystery. This was a good start to a new series. The characters were quirky and funny at the same time. Though there are some lingering "cliffhangers", I am sure they will be answered in additional books in the series. I will definitely return to Pine Bluff again. ... show more

  • Good first book in a series
I’ve been enjoying books with an older main character lately. So, when I came across Hammers and Homicide by Paula Charles and saw it was the first book in the new Hometown Hardware Mystery series, I knew I needed to try this book. Dawna is a widow running the hardware store left to her by her husband. When a murder happens at the store, she starts digging around with the help of her daughter, April. The story’s premise is pretty basic but also a solid foundation. I wanted to know more about the land developer and why he was murdered. I liked how the clues were sprinkled throughout the story and how it advanced. However, the one thing I didn’t like, and the reason it didn’t rate higher, was how the murder was solved. For me, the whole purpose of a cozy mystery is for this amateur detective to put together all these clues and beat the police to the answer. I would have preferred had Dawna solved the murder on her own instead of the murderer revealing themselves to her. I liked Dawna and April. Dawna is old school, while her daughter is more tech-savvy. I’ll admit that I found it implausible when Dawna was shocked at what could be found via Google or that her cell phone had a flashlight. Honestly, at 60ish, she’s not that old and would have been exposed to this technology for years. But their rapport with each other and the small community where they live in the Pacific Northwest was fun. I can’t wait to watch them grow as this series continues. Hammers and Homicide was a good first book in a new series. I enjoyed the book and found myself drawn into the story. I couldn’t put the book down because I wanted to know the mystery’s who, what, and why, and I wasn’t disappointed. I look forward to continuing the series and recommend it to fans of small-town cozies. ... show more
