1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Danielle Steel tells a riveting story of the dark side of motherhood. Zoe Morgan’s childhood was marked by her younger sister’s tragic illness, watching as her parents dedicated themselves completely to her final days and then divorced. As a young woman driven by these painful memories, Zoe sets the bar high for herself, studying hard and pursuing a career in the nonprofit world, where her deep compassion for disadvantaged children finds a focus. When Zoe falls in love and has her own child, she is determined to be a perfect mother as well. But before long, old scars long dormant begin to pull Zoe to the edge of an abyss too terrifying to contemplate. • Good read
Format: Paperback
Great book. Storyline was good. I would have liked a little more information at the end though.

  • Very intense and very different from what I expected from Danielle Steel
Format: Kindle
As a former practicing psychologist, I found this novel well-written and the characters well-developed. However, this is a dark story, there is no question about that. I felt in so many ways as if I was reading a case study of a very disturbed young woman, which I was. This is not the escape reading that I expected from this author. This does not however, make this a bad book or even a weak book. I read it through rather quickly, had great sympathy for some of the characters, and the ending was sad but not unexpected. Just don't expect this to be her typical story and happy ending. ... show more

  • A bit off the norm for this author, but great none-the-less!
Format: Hardcover
THE DARK SIDE is the latest novel from Danielle Steel and is a classic love story with a major twist. While out of character from what we typically expect when picking up Ms. Steel, her take on a modern day psychological thriller is not to be missed! Zoe Morgan comes into the story as a young girl who suffers a stilted childhood because of a devastating illness her little sister goes through. Her family is never the same again, and the scars it leaves on her into adulthood are obvious, but also deceptive. No one looks at her and sees pain ... but distortion is the new normal as we traverse a life of success, leading to love and eventual motherhood. She wants to be all that she didn't get in her own life for her daughter ... but she ends up being more than we ever expected. I highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a pivotal plot change in a romance/psychological thriller. There was a slight disconnect in emotion with this story compared to others by the author, but the suspense more than made up for it. Great story, great twists and a very satisfying read! ... show more

Educational and gripping is D'S work! Another fantastically well written piece of art. I'm amazed at the research required for her story line.

  • **Dark, Intense and loved it!! **
Format: Hardcover
I have read all of Danielle Steels books and loved them all. The Dark Side is different from her others but tells a riveting tale of motherhood. Zoe Morgan's childhood was magical until her sister, Rose, became very sick and then passed away. For four years her parents had focused on Rose and Zoe was left in the background. When Rose died Zoe thought that now things would go back to normal. They didn't. Her mother went into a deep depression and nothing and noone could help her. Eventually her father divorced her mother and moved away. Now it was just Zoe and her mother but it might as well have been just Zoe. She had to take care of herself and was only a ten year old. It is many years later and Zoe, now twenty-eight years old, is assistant administrator of a non-profit in New York that deals with abused children. She has also found the man of her dreams . Austin Roberts is a well known child advocacy lawyer. There was an instant connection. They fell deeply in love. After three years they got married. It was a perfect life. She got pregnant and they had a little girl Jaime who was very loved by both her parents. Motherhood wasn't what either of them had pictured. Zoe had a lot of problems nursing and the baby cried almost non-stop. As Jaime got older things changed and that caused Austin to be concerned. I cannot say more or it will spoil it for you. This is a book I could not put down once I started it. It deals with a dark, sensitive subject that keeps you engrossed. If you are a Danielle Steel fan you don't want to miss this one. I loved every minute of it. ... show more

  • Was a challenging read...
Format: Audible Audiobook
Let me preface this with... I am a huge Danielle Steele fan and have read most a she has written... with that said, The Dark Side was quite different and not one of my favs for sure. I don’t mind dark topics at all but this one was written in such a way that I never felt like I got to know any of the characters well. A narrative at best of most of the situations and then a random first person conversation. The topic is subjective as well and I don’t agree with the repetitive claim that MBP can’t be cured so it just never sat well with me. I will instead look forward to her next book ... :) ... show more
