Description

The classic New York Times–bestselling tale of friendship, generosity, and the magic and wonder of the Christmas spirit On his annual search for Rockefeller Center’s next Christmas tree, the chief gardener spots an ideal candidate: a stately Norway spruce located on the grounds of a convent. There he meets Sister Anthony, a nun for whom the tree has special meaning. Orphaned and sent to the convent as a lonely young girl, Sister Anthony befriended the then-tiny spruce whom she lovingly named “Tree.” Over the following decades, as the tree grew, so did Sister Anthony’s appreciation for the beauty and wonder of nature. She is reluctant to see her oldest and closest friend chopped down and sent away to New York City. But when a fierce blizzard threatens the old tree’s existence, Sister Anthony realizes it’s time to let the world enjoy Tree as she has for nearly her whole life. Accompanied by charming illustrations and a new introduction by the author, The Christmas Tree is a heartwarming story of love and friendship, a modern holiday classic for all ages. Read more

  • Good condition, as described
Book was in very good condition, as described in the product listing. There was a handwritten Christmas note to the book's original recipient, but condition was otherwise excellent. No tears or rough edges on the dust jacket and no dogeared pages. Well-packaged for shipment and arrived in a timely manner. I am very satisfied with the purchase and excited to finally own a copy of this book! ... show more

  • Beautiful Christmas story
Beautiful story. I loved the relationship between the tree and St. Anthony and how the tree transformed the understanding of beauty for the man whose job it is to find the Rockeffer tree. It made me cry for so many reasons. I will buy this book next Christmas for all my loved ones.

  • A Star of a Book That Reminds Us of the Beauty Even When All We Feel Is the Hardness
"The Christmas Tree" is a wonderful little 5 inch by 7 1/4 inch book with 118 pages. It could be read in one evening and might be a good Christmas gift. The author gets the idea from the giant Christmas Tree which is displayed at Rockefeller Center in New York City. The story is a fictional book about a little girl named Anna who becomes orphaned as a very young girl. She spends time in an orphanage until one day she is taken to a most beautiful estate called Brush Creek. It is here that Anna is raised by a group of nuns and eventually becomes a nun herself. At first Anna is a very lonely little girl and makes friends with a small Douglas Fir tree. She makes friends with the tree and shares all her secrets and thoughts with it. As the tree matures so does Anna. Anna becomes Sister Anthony who loves plants and trees and everything about nature. She is now an old woman and so is the tree. This is where the chief gardener enters the scene on his search for the perfect Christmas tree for the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. The chief gardener discovers the most perfect tree at Brush Creek, However he has to persuade Sister Anthony to give up the best friend she ever had. The story is a dialogue between the chief gardener and Sister Anthony. As the story progresses you learn much about Sister Anthony and her love for nature. You also see her sharing her vast knowledge with children gathered under her beloved tree. She tells many stories about her life to the children and the chief gardener. Eventually after much inward struggling and strife, she agrees to sacrifice her beloved friend to bring happiness and joy to the people of New York. While the book is a fictional account, it is written with such skill that you believe the author was actually the chief gardener and Sister Anthony was a real person. Julie Salamon does a wonderful job making this story alive. This is a great read, however, I gave this book three stars because of a few things. First of all, I am not sure it was in good taste to portray a nun as a "tree hugger" - finding her source of strength and comfort and inspiration from a tree -- it would seem to me that a nun would find these things in the Lord Jesus -- the one whom Christmas is all about. Second, to include nuns in the story but to say absolutely nothing about what nuns stand for i.e. the birth of Jesus on Christmas. seems to me to miss something about the whole Christmas story. Third, some of the dialogue was a slight bit confusing. Finally this book is listed for ages 9-12, however, I think it is more of an adult book. I originally purchased the book to donate to my elementary school library but I am not sure it would keep their interest. However, in spite of all these concerns, it is still a good book to be enjoyed during the Christmas Season or anytime of year --especially winter time. ... show more

  • The sort of book parents would read to their children
Having added this book to my book list, I was unable to find it for many years. The Christmas Tree was first written in 1996. I am fortunate to have found this twentieth-anniversary edition for Kindle. The author says she was hoping to write a story that adults and children would enjoy. So this is not a book written specifically for early readers. But it works very well as the sort of book parents might read to their children. The head gardener at Rockefeller Center in New York has the job of finding the perfect Christmas tree every year. One year he heard about a tree at a convent in the prettiest part of New Jersey and went out to take a look at it. It was a very good tree, but one of the nuns was particularly attached to it and wasn’t ready to let it go yet. She told the gardener the story of how she first came to the convent as a child and befriended the tree when it was a sapling. The gardener made it a point to not come between people and their trees, so he abandoned the idea of that tree for that year, but he became friends with the nun, and over a period of several years, he heard more of her story and in a way became part of the story. ... show more

  • Very Heartwarming
During this time of year (Christmas season), we often get caught up in the hustle and bustle. “The Christmas Tree” encourages friendship, a slower pace, and searching for a deeper meaning. This book enabled me to find inner peace and and a realization to continue to look for the positives in all things and to slow down and to foster relationships that I probably wouldn’t normally consider. ... show more
