Description

In paperback, Clarice Lispector’s explosive and surprising second novel The Chandelier, written when Lispector was only twenty-three, reveals a very different author from the college student whose debut novel, Near to the Wild Heart, announced the landfall of “Hurricane Clarice.” Virginia and her cruel, beautiful brother, Daniel, grow up in a decaying country mansion. They leave for the city, but the change of locale leaves Virginia's internal life unperturbed. In intensely poetic language, Lispector conducts a stratigraphic excavation of Virginia's thoughts, revealing the drama of Clarice’s lifelong quest to discover “the nucleus made of a single instant”—and displaying a new face of this great writer, blazing with the vitality of youth. • Genius!
In a lifetime of reading thousands of books, this is the best book I have ever read. It completely fulfills Ezra Pound’s dictum “the book should be a ball of light in the reader’s hands.” Lispector’s novel “The Chandelier” is a beautiful work of perfection. Each sentence sparkles with unexpected turns of phrase and startling invention. Reading “The Chandelier” is an experience of continuous joy and delight. It is a work of absolute genius. I look forward to rereading it again and again for the rest of my life. I’ve even bought copies for my sons and all of my friends. It is a passionate, wonderful, beautiful work that anyone who enjoys excellent writing will love. ... show more

  • An amazing book by a much overlooked writer in the USA; elsewhere though she's a top-rated 20th century writer.
An amazing writer. Although this novel doesn't have much narrative, it's pure poetry and requires slow and repeated reading. Not for everyone, but it inspired me.

  • A waste of time
It’s like being inside the mind of a terribly confused person, and waiting for something to happen. When it does, it’s a huge disappointment, and I feeli wasted the time it took to read this book.

  • don't believe the hype
It jumps, it jukes, it swerves, it limbos, it fades, it roars up again--and it all means so frightfully little that I can't believe I made it past page nine. Henry James, Virginia Woolf, George Eliot, Conrad, Proust, hell even Denton Welch--these people were writers. To borrow Capote's famous dictum/quip about Keroac: "That's not writing, that's typing." PUNT. ... show more
