Description

From the author of The Cheerleaders comes another dark YA thriller set in the same town of Sunnybrook. When a mysterious accident befalls a member of the all-star high school football team, the town's deadly history stands to repeat itself—and the price of discovering the truth is higher than anyone could imagine. It was the deaths of five cheerleaders that made the town of Sunnybrook infamous. Eleven years later, the girls' killer has been brought to justice, and the town just wants to move on. By the time Hadley moves to Sunnybrook, though, the locals are more interested in the Tigers, the high school's championship-winning football team. The Tigers are Sunnybrook’s homegrown heroes--something positive in a town with so much darkness in its past. Hadley could care less about football, but shortly after she gets assigned to cover the team's latest championship bid for the school newspaper, one of the Tigers is poisoned at a party, and almost immediately after, Hadley starts getting strange emails warning her to stay far away from the football team. It's becoming clear Sunnybrook's golden boys have secrets, and after a second player is mysteriously killed, Hadley’s beginning to suspect that someone wants the team to pay for their sins. Or does this new target on the football team have something to do with what happened to the cheerleaders all those years ago? As an outsider in Sunnybrook, Hadley feels like she's the only one who can see the present clearly, but it looks like she’s going to have to dig up the darkness of the past to get to the bottom of what’s happening now. Luckily, there are still some Sunnybrook High grads who never left--people who were around eleven years ago—and if she can just convince them to talk, she might be able stop a killer before another Tiger dies. • Hooked!
Format: Kindle
The Cheerleaders was one of my favorite mysteries so I’ve been really excited to read this one! Kara Thomas is a mystery must buy and this one was no different! 11 years ago 5 girls died in Sunnybrook. The thing that put the town back together was the football. However just how much have people looked away when it comes to the players? What seemed like a boring article for journalist Hadley, turns into her receiving cryptic messages about staying away from the football team. When bodies start dropping, Hadley knows she has to keep looking, in order to figure out what’s going on. As she quickly becomes one of the most hated girls in town she’ll have no choice but to team up with her rival Peter, whose sister happens to be Monica. Monica figured out who really murdered those two girls all those years ago ago. Can they figure out what’s going on before more people get hurt? And what exactly is the connection to the 5 dead girls from the past? I couldn’t put this one down! Thrilling, engaging, and will keep readers guessing! Another must read! ... show more

  • Second in a two-book series
Format: Kindle
An interesting pair of books (The Cheerleaders was the first), about a small town in upstate New York where many high schoolers die, mostly by murder. The first book centers on Monica, member of the dance team that took the place of the cheerleading squad when most of its members were murdered. Monica is very aware of how protective the town is of its star athletes and believes there was more to the deaths (two dead in a car crash, two murdered at a sleepover, a fifth, Monica’s sister, a suicide) than the town and police have decided. She is of course right, and shakes up the little town with her findings. “The Champions” picks up the unlucky town’s history about seven or eight years later. This time the narrator is Hadley, new to town and an aspiring journalist. Her main rival at the school paper is Peter, younger brother of Monica from the first book. She is assigned to chronicle the school’s football team, which is in contention to win the state championship for the third time in a row. Hadley soon starts receiving anonymous messages warning her to get out of that assignment, and realizes that there are a lot of shady things going on, to ensure that the team members keep up their academic standards, to cover up players’ misdeeds, etc., and when one player is poisoned at a party, then another is killed in a hit and run, she realizes that it might actually be dangerous to look into things too closely. I enjoyed the small-town setting and the teenage angst, both of which were ably evoked by the author. I was a little worried when I realized that Peter was a big part of the story, having been traumatized by Beverly Cleary’s taking her books’ focus away from Beezus and giving all the attention to Ramona, but I’m pleased to say that Peter doesn’t take over this book at all. Entertaining reads. ... show more

  • Great Sequal
Format: Kindle
I devoured the Cheerleaders in a day so I was extra excited to read The Champions just as soon as it was released. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. While there are numerous tie-ins to the first book and we get glimpses of how the original curving characters are living life years later, the story is also so well written and the characters are developed enough to be a stand alone story. Hadley is your typical high schooler who skirts along the fray of numerous popularity groups without really belonging to one faction but when she catches the eye of a popular football player who then mysteriously collapses at a house party she starts to question if she was the intended target. Then an anonymous source starts emailing her warning her about the football team and her on again/off again school adversary is the only person she feels she can trust, even though he is constantly trying to beat her in school and on the newspaper. While things marketed as a YA mystery as an elder millennial who is so far from a young adult, I throughly enjoyed this book and hope for a third! ... show more

  • Solid, quick read
Format: Kindle
Content Warning: underage drinking, death, mention of hazing, mention of rape I never read The Cheerleaders but always wanted to and then I got the arc for The Champions and thought I could jump into the story without reading the first book and I think I caught up with everything pretty good. Hadley is an outsider at Sunnybrook high school which has a winning and popular football team. She’s new to the town so she wasn’t there when the five cheerleaders died there in the past but of course she’s heard of it. She wants to go into the journalism and belongs to the school newspaper when she gets a chance to interview the football team but gets embroiled in something deeper. This is a story about a school covering up the bad deeds of some of the popular boys in class and how things get unravelled and Hadley being in the middle of it all even if she is an “outsider”. She’s not best friends with any of the popular kids but they know her and talk to her so she’s not ignored at school. I liked that the story moved fast and I didn’t get lost even though I didn’t read The Cheerleaders. It is the typical story of a cover-up in the athletics department of a popular school and kids getting hurt or killed because of this secret. I do think at times there were too many names for me to follow and I kept having to remind myself who was who. My Thoughts: This is a pretty solid, quick read! I was invested in finding out what the football team was covering up and it’s pretty bad but I’m glad in the end there was some justice. ... show more

  • Nice tie in
Format: Hardcover
It was a nice tie in to the original story. I was expecting more of an intense mystery. The mystery was decent in this story, but it wasn’t like the original. Overall it is worth the read. The author is a great author.
