Description

He does not love me, and my heart will never mend if I am constantly reminded of it.A year after his hopes of securing Elizabeth Bennet’s heart are dashed, Fitzwilliam Darcy brings his sister Georgiana to London for her first Season. Believing he could never make Elizabeth love him—for so she emphatically told his aunt—he is mortified to come upon her while visiting an art exhibition with his sister. He makes a hasty escape before he can be seen. Or so he thinks.Having survived a disastrous confrontation with Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Elizabeth Bennet is devastated, yet not surprised, when Mr Darcy never returns to Hertfordshire, for she had just come to understand her love for him. Determined to put him out of her mind, she accedes to her mother’s instruction to go to London and find a husband. The highlight of the London Season is an art exhibition, where everybody who is anybody is determined to be seen, Elizabeth and her aunt included. Alas, it is also the location of a couch upon which much gossip is shared, confidences are overheard, and misunderstandings and mischief are created in abundance, as Darcy and Elizabeth soon discover first hand. Will they be able to untangle the web of misapprehension they are tangled in before one of them accepts someone new? The Cad, the Couch, and the Cut Direct is a clean, low angst, farcical and fun novella-length variation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Read more

  • Wonderful, short but full story
Jessie Lewis has quickly become a favorite author with her consistent, witty, and romantic JAFF tales. This is another example of her sparkling imagination. Not very long but complete and fully developed, leaving you satisfied. Very rom-com-esque, this story takes place in the space of P&P after the Lydia debacle and Lady CdB's visit to Longbourne. Elizabeth goes to London with Kitty to stay at her Uncle's to take in the city, her family hoping she will find a beaux and stop moping. ODC experiences many misunderstandings over the course of a few days when both they and their relatives pay several visits to a museum. Things are overheard, rumors are misinterpreted, miscommunications are delightfully many. Can they redirect the course of their live story in time to have their HEA? Don't pass up the chance to find out. It's worth sitting down with a cup of tea to see how things turn out. Ms. Lewis is a clear talent for inventive stories that genuinely ring true to Austen' masterwork, well done! I will happily add this to my library and declare myself a devoted fan. ... show more

  • Witty and charming
Absolutely lovely. It is true that E & D share very little screen time together. This is usually a deal-breaker for me, but, in this case, it somehow worked out because they were each very much present in the mind and the heart of the other. When they finally reunite it is sweet and satisfying. The dialogue and character interactions are sparkling and very entertaining. I finished the story with a huge smile! ... show more

  • Delightful romp
Mistaken identities and good intentions meet up in this delightful story. Jessie Lewis has managed to put beloved characters in a series of silly situations without losing their dignity. Witty and warm, this story is a what-if ending to Pride and Prejudice, based on the idea that Darcy and Elizabeth did not come to an agreement at Longbourne and continued to pine for each other for many months. Until they both end up at the same art exhibition in London. And yet it takes several more days and awkward almost-encounters to ultimately get to their HEA. A truly delightful read. ... show more

  • Another lovely story from Jessie Lewis
I loved this story - Jessie writes so well. This story, like her others is well-paced - she never allows her readers to lose interest with overly long dialogue and repeated conversations. This story was full of wit, fun and lovely versions of our dear couple and their family and friends. Looking forward to her next! ... show more

  • Misunderstandings abound, all around
A P&P variant post-L&W marriage, with mistaken assumptions running rampant to confuse and bemuse. A strong influence of Old Hollywood "madcap" rom-coms, with everybody getting paired up. Some of the HEAs are unexpected; I felt one of them was very weak plot-wise which was unfortunate, as I had to take a star off for it. It's pleasant and low angst, but I doubt I'll be re-reading this. YMMV. ... show more

  • Delightfully ridiculous romp
This is a delightfully ridiculous romp from beginning to end. It's akin to a Shakespearean comedy with various humorous misunderstandings (the reader knowing the truth in most instances from the start): eavesdropping, misinformation, mistaken identities, plotting that goes awry, and a happy ending. There's nary a villain in sight except for the backstory - just well-meaning but bumbling protagonists. The lack of angst doesn't make the story any less of a page-turner. The fun is anticipating how and when everything will get untangled. Darcy and Elizabeth each continue to grieve the perceived loss of the other more than a year after Lady Catherine traveled to Longbourn to berate Miss Bennet over the rumor that she and Darcy were engaged. When the grand lady had subsequently confronted her nephew, her account of that conversation was less than truthful. Hearing that Elizabeth had no problem promising never to marry him since she had no interest in him anyway killed all Darcy's remaining hopes. Consequently, he never returned to Hertfordshire...which killed all Elizabeth's remaining hopes. Darcy spots Elizabeth at a London art gallery and panics when she starts to turn her head in his direction, darting away and hiding behind a large urn. This is perceived by at least one observer as a cut direct of the young lady, setting off this string of entertaining events. The principal cast of characters includes Kitty Bennet, Colonel Fitzwilliam, Sargeant Mulhall (the Colonel's batman), Lady Tuppence Swanhook, and Lord Rutherford (Lady T's cousin). Mr. Knowles is also a Person of Interest, since he has been calling on Elizabeth while she and Kitty are staying with the Gardiners. Mr. Lewis's writing is, as always, a joy to read. The fact that she makes this farcical story convincing is a testament to her considerable talent. Content is clean. Highly recommend! ... show more
