Description

The most complete collection of Yuletide whodunits ever assembled • The Edgar Award-winning editor collects sixty of his all-time favorite holiday crime stories—from Arthur Conan Doyle and Thomas Hardy to Sara Paretsky and Ed McBain. “Anyone who cares about the best mystery writing of the past century and beyond would be lucky to receive this thick volume during the holidays." —The Washington Post This collection touches on all aspects of the holiday season, and all types of mysteries. • Great collection
Got this as a gift for someone else, but then I started reading it and decided to keep it for myself as fun, light reading at bedtime. Have enjoyed it quite a bit. Most of the entries are short enough to make just the right length for an engaging, short story before going to sleep.

  • Sixty-Nine Stories!
There is a LOT of enjoyable mystery reading in this book. There's 650 pages with 69 stories! The stories are divided into categories: A Traditional Little Christmas (9 stories) A Funny Little Christmas (6) A Sherlockian Little Christmas (5) A Pulpy Little Christmas (3) An Uncanny Little Christmas (6) A Scary Little Christmas (6) A Surprising Little Christmas (3) A Modern Little Christmas (5) A Puzzling Little Christmas (6) A Classic Little Christmas (10) The authors include many names you've probably already heard of if you love mysteries. Mary Roberts Rinehart is represented in the Traditional section. Known now as a romance-mystery writer, her novel "The Man in the Lower Ten" (1909) was the first mystery to appear on the bestseller list in America. Learn something new, such as in "A Wreath for Marley" (Uncanny), where you'll learn the correct pronunciation of gangster John Dillinger's last name. Check out Gillian Linscott's "A Scandal in Winter" (Sherlockian) for the perfect last line. And Peter Lovesy's O'Henry ending in "The Haunted Crescent" (Uncanny). This is short story collection that's 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5. Not every story is a total hit for me, but there's a lot of good reading. Recomended! I also enjoyed Penzler's collection, The Black Lizard Big Book of Locked-Room Mysteries (Vintage Crime/Black Lizard Original). Happy Reader ... show more

  • A Pleasant Mix of Old and Modern Stories
I've been on a kick reading these big anthologies of old pulp mystery stories. When I saw this new one, I ordered it immediately. While waiting for its arrival, Christmas was bearing down on me quickly, so in a fit of hurry, I also bought the Kindle version and started reading immediately. It is a good book, but the mix of stories is uneven. There were none that I did not like at all. Some were particularly interesting. Overall, it's a high 3.5 to 4 star book. It's especially good to read during its season. There is a mix of classic old stories from early in the 20th century and a few modern stories. The old ones are better. ... show more

  • Marvelous Mystery Collection!
I was delighted with the time range and sheer variety of these stories and their characters! Particularly as I read it in mid-December. Not only were the mysteries intriguing but also was the look back at changes in manners and speech. Thanks to this book I have a new interest in vintage mysteries and a long list of authors to seek out. ... show more

  • Many stories centered on Christmas
An admirable collection of mystery writers all with novellas centered on Christmas. While not are as good as others all are interesting, and this is a good read during the season.

  • Pretty good, but at least half of these are not mystery stories :-(
There are quite a few mystery stories here, in the general vein of Agatha Christie or Sherlock Holmes. But a lot of it is more like horror or maybe suspense. A few are so depressing that I wish I'd never read them. Unfortunately, it's hard to tell for each one until you read it. I probably wouldn't buy it again. ... show more
