Description

Life hasn’t been too kind to talented artist, Lizbeth Davenport for the last few years. Her entire family was wiped out by influenza, leaving her alone in the world. Then she was unfairly fired from the job that was her sole support which led to her being kidnapped and sold to a brothel. Now that she’s free she’s ready to move on with her life, but the anger still festers that no one paid the price for kidnapping her. Even though his family has been pushing him toward marriage, Marcus Mallory has no desire for the confinement of the wedded state. He enjoys the company of the ladies and likes his life the way it is. Since he is attempting to have a bill passed on sex slavery in the House of Commons he is requested to help rescue Lizbeth from the brothel. Aside from the attraction he feels toward her, he also bears a sense of responsibility for her welfare. When he discovers Lizbeth’s plan to bring down the people who are running the sex slavery ring, he insists on working with her, but will his growing attraction to Lizbeth ever be returned by this woman who cannot stand a man’s touch? • light but very enjoyable readinb
this is the fourth book I've read in this series. all are written well, and the characters keep you engrossed. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. I highly recommend this author's books for easy entertainment.

  • Double take
It is interesting when doing a marathon read, especially in a series, like this to discover part of one book has been copied and pasted into the next book. That’s what happened in this book a whole section from book 3 appears in book 4. The books in the series are relatively small or shorter as the case may be. That said, book 3 ended so abruptly That is a fact book 4 is the second part. I think the author realized her error because she introduced the next character in the series who has appeared throughout the series. Since I have read the first and the last book out of sequence, I will say that this series was pleasant. Callie Hutton is a gifted Author And I have enjoyed many of her books. This was a delightful series, so on to book 5. ... show more

  • A romantic love story with a timeless message
The Artist and the Rake is book four in The Merry Misfits of Bath series written by Callie Hutton. Like the rest of the series the story involves a love match between two people from different social classes and the problems inherent with that kind of relationship. The characters are well-developed and relatable. The romance is sweet but with a touch of spice that will make you long for that love which sets your soul on fire. Callie Hutton's lovers make even those with a heart of stone believe in everlasting love that will remain as strong in the Twilight years as it was in the beginning. Yet, what sets The Artist and the Rake apart from the rest of the series is the clever way Callie Hutton from her weaves in the historical perspective on a topic that is a concern still today- human trafficking. I myself am guilty of getting caught up in the fairytale romance and pageantry of Regency England and forget that for the poor and even working class citizenry life was not so romantic. Back then, as unfortunately we see still see now, there are those who exploit the most vulnerable of our population, our women and children. People stealing or selling children and women to work at sweat shops, farmworkers or the sex trade is a global problem that exists across time. The story of how this happens and the effect on people's lives is the element I find most fascinating in this fourth book in the series. Callie Hutton shares this drama concerning the ugly underbelly of Regency England with sensitivity and an amazing amount of historical research. She includes in this narrative what was happening in the courts, law enforcement and parliament at the time. While I as a reader could feel the seriousness of the problem, not once did I lose hope that the book would end in the happily ever after the two main characters dreamed off. Overall, once again Ms Hutton delivers a well written, romantic, historical novel with a happily ever after ending that scoops you up and deposits you in historic Bath. The Artist and the Rake is a lovely interlude fit for tea and scones in a spring garden. Pick it up and see for yourself! ... show more

  • Will love be enough to heal her soul ...
Will her past come between them ... When I read the previous installment in this series Lady Pamela and the Gambler, I wondered about Lizbeth, as in appearance she looked find despite the ordeal and nightmare she went through. This one book is darker than the three firsts, as it deals with prostitution and rape. Still Mrs Callie Hutton treated the subject with consideration and thoughtfulness, while the sordid details are kept at bay, Lizbeth reveals enough of the trauma she lived for everyone to understand the festering wounds it left her to live with it. Marcus, was not my favorite hero when the series began with his sister’s story, but he changed too, and here he proves to be a very caring man, never seing Lizbeth as a damaged woman but a survivor, a woman driven by a strong will to regain what was stolen from her. Much more than her innocence, she was robbed from her trust in the other and her right to enjoy her own body. This story shows how victims were brushed aside, and how power and greed win more often than justice if you are from the wrong side of the fence. That the villain didn’t get its right comeuppance is upsetting but alas life is this way, not everyone wins. But sure, in a romance, we might hope to see the bad guys get their right reward, but as it is a series, maybe it is coming ... 4.5 stars for this tale of healing and regain one’s trust in other. I was granted an advance copy by the author, and preordered my own. Here is my true and unbiased opinion. ... show more
