Description

Designed with power users in mind, the TI-86 graphing calculator has all the power and functionality of the popular TI-85 but with significant enhancements aimed at students of college mathematics, engineering, and science. The TI-86 includes a function evaluation table, deep entry recall, seven different graph styles with multiple line and shading options, and slope and direction fields for differential equations. In addition, the TI-86 boasts 96 KB of user-available memory--three times more than the TI-85. There's also a new function evaluation table which shows numeric output for function, polar, parametric, and differential equation modes. You can also view multiple lists and attach formulas to those lists for automatic computations. A new aspect of the TI-86 is the ability to customize product functionality with machine language programs downloaded from TI's Web site. Besides the strong graphing abilities, the TI-86 also has powerful calculus features like integration, derivatives, minimums, maximums, roots, and arcs. It also supports Z80 assembly language programming. The 64 x 128 high-contrast pixel screen displays eight lines of 21 characters each plus two levels of display menus. With the TI-86, you can link to other TI-86s and TI-85s via the input/output port, and to CBLs, CBRs, and computers. --Dana Van Nest

  • Good for the price
I have only used the TI-83 before purchasing the TI-86. From the few weeks that I have used this calculator, it has saved me a lot of time and effort. The biggest time saving thing on it is the solver and the simultaneous equation solver. What would take me tons of time and an entire page of writing, solving for 3 or even 4 unknowns, now just takes a few seconds. All I have to do is put it in and hit solve! Also, the vector function of this calculator is nice for my Calc III, statics, and Physics classes. It comes most handy when working in 3D. However, the interface is hard to work with and can take too much time. They should come up with a faster and easier to use menu to edit, enter, and use vectors. Other than these things, it does everything the TI-83 does without any trouble. It is a good scientific calculator, as long as your teacher allows it to be used! I am glad I made this purchase. ... show more

  • A fine calculator, now a collectible
The TI-86 is one of the peaks in the TI calculators series. It was created and came on the market around 1996, right after the TI-82 and the TI-92. It was better than the TI-82, with a bigger screen, more memory and built-in functions and capabilities. Unlike the TI-92, it could not do symbolic calculations, but its ease of use and versatility quickly made it a favorite. Then, Texas instruments made a very unpopular decision: it decided to discontinue it. Apparently the company was afraid that it would jeopardize the sales of their newer models, the TI-83 and the TI-92 Plus. And so the TI-86 was "eighty-sixed"... leaving its enthusiast to look for it on the second-hand market. I bought a used one on the Amazon, after my old one faltered, after 10 years of use. Since then, TI has introduced newer and faster calculators, with a lot of memory and additional features. Yet, to this day, the TI-86 can hold its own in many respects. Compared to the TI-84, it has a bigger screen (128×64 pixels), uses long variable names (up to 6 symbols), and has superior handling of matrices, lists, and vectors. Compared to the TI-89 and the Voyage 200, the TI-86 has a much more intuitive interface, especially when programming your own functions and programs. As an instructor, I often use both the TI-84 and the Voyage 200 (because these are the one approved for our students), but for personal calculations, I always keep a TI-86 at my side. ... show more

  • Good but short life
I was really excited to see this calculator available. It is a simple to use great calculator that does everything you need for math science majors but integrals in calculus. I missed mine, and wish I could buy a new one, but bought this refurbished one. It worked great the first year, but just started eating batteries and died. It didn't cost much, so I set my expectations accordingly, but really wish it would have lasted a little longer. Now I have to go buy another one. I hope it lasts longer. ... show more

  • Used, older model
Daughter came home and said she needed graphing calculator. I thought Walmart $30-40 and was surprised that I was at least $100 off in my estimate! Found this one for more in my price range and, though it didn't come with the charger as pictured, the company did credit me the amount to go buy the charger and we're good to go. Only draw back is, like any electronics, this is an older model and doesn't have some of the easier features and visual coolness of more contemporary models....but it's math and graphing. Like my daughter said "it's helping me get through this....that's all I want." It does the job for us. ... show more

  • As Expected.
We have no complaints. It would have been nice to the cover but I'm pretty sure the description said it wouldn't. We got this for our high school student so he could stop checking out the school's calculators... and losing them. Pretty much got what we expected to get. If you can't afford to spring for the brand new TI-xx calculator you can't go wrong here. ... show more

  • The only calculator for me!
Great calculator, I wish they still made these. I use it everyday for work, while it has many functions I don't use, I love the ability to recall previous entries and edit them (you can go back maybe the previous 10 entries), the larger screen for long formulae entered all at once, and I use the square root enough to want it as a main button function rather than having to hit the 2nd function button first. I tried switching to several other lower versions (especially since I didn't need the graphing function) but ended up seeking out a used ti-86 to replace my old failing one (multiple single lines stopped working across the screen to where it would obscure results ...was that a 3 or an 8??, after 15yrs of daily use I guess that's not bad). ... show more

  • Broken calculator
While the TI-86 I was sent was in one piece, the screen is not legible. After fresh batteries, the contrast needs to be cranked all the way down, and then the screen is visible, but only at extreme angles. Technically functional, but not usable.

  • Must Have
This is a wonderful calculator. It has been my faithful companion for two years now. I bought it after it was recommended to me by a former teacher of mine. This calculator makes life so mush easier! You have to keep in mind though, this is NOT a easy calculator to use. You can't pick it up and understand stuff immediately. That's why I have a very old rare device called a manual! It tells you how to do stuff! Absolutely amazing! The OS that it runs on is not like a TI-83/84, so there is a learning curve. Just be patient, give it time, and it'll be the best buy of your life! ... show more
