Sleeping Bag Guide Sleep Well: Finding the Right Sleeping Bag Sleeping bag technology has come a long way from the days of cowboy bedrolls. These days, there are a number of high-tech materials and designs available to keep you warm during the coldest outings. Here's a short list of things to keep in mind when you're shopping for a bag:Buy for Cold It's a safe bet that on at least one of your adventures, the nighttime temperature will drop unexpectedly. That's why it's smart to buy a bag that's rated for the lowest possible temperature you expect to face on your camping and backpacking trips. For summer trips, a bag rated at +35 degrees or higher will likely do the trick. If you like to camp in higher elevations in the summer, or if spring and fall outings are in your future, consider bags rated from +10 to +35. Winter adventurers should look for bags in the -10 to +10 range, while those on serious winter alpine climbs and expeditions will want a bag rated lower than -10. Keep in mind that sleeping bag manufacturers' temperature ratings only estimate the minimum temperature at which the bag will provide warmth. Take these numbers with a grain of salt, as different folks generate different amounts of heat when they sleep. If you're the type who likes to pile on the covers even on warmer nights, go for a bag that's rated ten degrees colder. The opposite is true for "warm" sleepers--a 35-degree bag will probably work for you on a 25-degree night.Goose or No Goose? The most important component of any sleeping bag is its insulating material. Modern sleeping bags offer two choices: goose down or synthetic. While both materials have advantages and disadvantages, down bags are considered superior because of their phenomenal warmth-to-weight and warmth-to-bulk ratios. While providing great insulation, down is extremely compressible and light. There's a reason why geese can fly and stay warm through the winter! Down also boasts great long-term durability and will typically retain its insulating properties after years of use. All of that said, there are many high-quality synthetic bags on the market and synthetic materials are getting better all the time. While a synthetic bag will weigh somewhat more than a down bag at an equivalent temperature rating, synthetic bags perform better when wet. (Yes, the Achilles heel of down is that it loses all insulating properties when wet.) If your trips take you to wet climates, you may want to consider a synthetic bag for this reason alone. Keep in mind, too, that many people are allergic to down--synthetic bags are non-allergenic. Finally, down is considerably more expensive than synthetic, which might tip the balance for adventurers on a budget.Bags for All Shapes Sleeping bags come in two basic shapes that reflect their intended use. Mummy-shaped bags offer the best warmth because they conform to the body's contours. This minimizes the amount of body heat the body must put out to maintain a constant temperature. Many mummy bags are offered in women-specific shapes and sizes, as well. Rectangular bags, while they do offer more room to toss and turn, are less thermally efficient because they contain more open air space. Also, they are typically heavier than mummy bags, and are generally not offered with down insulation, making them best suited for car camping or short backpacking trips.Pad Yourself No matter what kind of bag you choose, a sleeping pad is a required accessory. Not only do they provide much-needed comfort when sleeping on the ground, pads also offer crucial warmth for your backside, as the weight of your body compresses--and renders virtually useless--the sleeping bag insulation that lies beneath you.

  • Uh, yes, Mammoth is a good name for it lol
Color: Green Size: Mammoth 0F
I ordered the green Teton 0F Mammoth bag and this thing great, it is massive, super thick and cozy. Honestly the bag in the photos seemed smaller to me for some reason, I have never seen a sleeping bag this large in person. Did I mention this bag is massive. Its huge, ginormous, prehistorical in size... its a behemoth! Our ancestors might have chased it with spears to harvest its stuffing. So much fluff! And were talking the good kind of fluff here... If I were to describe it would be like the thickness of the fluff is 6-10 college type Queen comforters covered in ripstop zippered together. Getting it out and putting it back in the stuff sack is one hell of a challenge, almost like one of those carnival games where if you can best the unbeatable game you get a massive stuffed prize. I feel like a few more inches added to the stuff sack would make this more appealing and not a cruel joke for some people lol. For example when fully in the stuff sack the compression straps almost literally do nothing, thats how tight of a fit it is. Took about 6 minutes timed to get it back in. Just don't give up on getting it in or out of the stuff sack, or cut it off like the lady who reviewed before me lol. Do not take it out of the stuff sack in a place you do not want to store it or use it, even carrying it around out of the stuff-sack is cumbersome lol. I do feel like this gear addition is one of those multi "pro" and multi "con" type scenarios for car camping situations where interior space is a concern. I have a mid size car-uv and its pushing it packing this thing in there with other desirable gear. IF you sleep in a truck bed topper or a situation and can just leave it un-sacked this would be the best thing ever. Do I prioritize sleep comfort in my tent over breathable space in my car while traveling? Absolutely, and I'm glad I did. Jokes aside I love it though. It is everything i wanted in an OVER-SIZED sleeping bag and more, a lot MORE. More than I bargained for but when is that really a bad thing? I think I will really enjoy not being wrapped up like a mummy or straight jacket will be a game changer to my forest comfort. Due to the shear thickness of each layer, zipping/unzipping this thing works better than any sleep bag I've ever used, very smooth, did not catch (yet). I have not tested the warmth yet but it has all the appearance of something that will definitely live up to the 0F selling point. I might even get too warm in it. I tend to sleep with my bags open and over me with my feet in the mummy bag so I love that i can unzip each sections if i want it act as a comforter. I've slept in 20F down bags with a few layers, including insulated snowboarding bib and emergency bivvy in 13F weather and been still got cold so a 0F bag was desired. Is this bag perfect for everyone or all situations, probably not due to its size and challenge to store but Its exactly what it says it is, and if you have the room for it, someone to re-sack it, and the need for a cold weather bag where you will feel cozy this is it. ... show more

  • Soft, warm, fluffy- packing bag TOO SMALL
Color: Blue Size: Mammoth
This bag came the day before a last-minute camping trip, so I did not have time to wash prior. I slept in it with my toddler and we both kept very warm with lows of 40 degrees. We slept on a Klymit insulated inflatable mat, so I can’t say it was the only thing that kept us warm because we were protected from the ground. I also threw a blanket over the top with a sheet for my dogs to snuggle into so their nails wouldn’t scratch or snag the bag. Pros: It came without any odor and fluffed up very quickly and was so cozy and warm and luxurious. I slept with bare feet and they stayed plenty warm. Cons: Just 1, but it’s significant- It took FOREVER to get the sleeping bag out of the carrying bag it was packed in. It was the hardest bag I’ve ever had to remove a sleeping bag from. I read the reviews where people said they were struggling with it and thought, well…maybe they’re being dramatic. They weren’t. It’s a shame because this sleeping bag would likely receive more 5 star reviews, but for my experience, they sadly lose a whole star simply because of the packing bag design, it’s terrible, and there was not the slightest hope I could ever stuff this sleeping bag back inside the packing bag. I did a practice run the night before to make sure I could do it and it was such a waste of time. I ended up just using the packing bag to stuff all our winter gear into and used the purple sheet in the picture to tie the sleeping bag up in by the 4 corners. That stupid looking ball rode passenger in an SUV and nearly touched the ceiling. I don’t even know where to look or what to buy to store the sleeping bag- it is a fat, large, super fluffy sleeping bag. If anyone has found something they like for it, I hope they’ll include it in their reviews. Was it worth it? For sure. I love the bag. Would be singing its praises were it possible to store it in the bag in came in. So now, on to find a solution so this sleeping bag can be my go-to for years to come. ... show more

  • Warm and cozy. Difficult but possible to get it back in stuff sack
Color: Gray Size: Mammoth 20F
We used this sleeping bag for 2 nights on a windy, rainy, chilly camping trip. Night time temps were probably high 30s-mid 40s. My 6’4 boyfriend and I shared the sleeping bag with plenty of room. We stayed warm and even got a little hot at times. The drawcords are nice to be able to cinch the top of the sleeping bag a little tighter at the neck level and the very top of the sleeping bag tighter around heads or pillows. Like many others have said, it is fairly difficult to get the sleeping bag back into the stuff sack but I can positively report that it is possible. We have done it twice. It took two of us both times, but I think it’s worth the wrestling match. My helpful tip would be to make sure you’ve rolled it as tight as possible and sit on the roll to help get some extra air out of the sleeping bag, then start working the stuff sack up and over the sleeping bag. You can do it! ... show more

  • Don't think twice! – but expect to buy a larger stuff sack
Color: Green Size: Mammoth 0F
"Why didn't we do this years ago?!" You or your other is likely to exclaim something similar if you've been camping each in your own bags. I cannot vouch for this over any other double bag, but after two nights, zero regrets about the 0 degree Teton bag itself. It's super cozy! However, Teton: please supply a larger stuff sack. Potential customers: until that happens, expect to buy a very large duffle bag to make stuffing the Teton each morning a cinch. Or a 55 gallon or larger garbage bag. Or keep searching for a well-reviewed bag with a generously sized stuff sack. ... show more

  • Slept 4 days at 35f, no problem.
Color: Orange Size: Mammoth 0F
We went camping in the deep woods of North Carolina for 4 days, hitting the 30’s(F) at night. The sleeping bag easily fit my wife, 7 year old and 4 year old with room for each of them to toss and turn. My wife said it was TOO WARM for 30 degrees(F), and had to unzip the side to vent air. Not a problem, over-prepared is nice. Getting the sleeping bag back into the travel bag is almost impossible. I tried by myself for 20 minutes without avail. Then I had my wife help, also without success. We ended up rolling it up as tight as we could and tying it with rope. Not a big deal, it’s warm and that’s all we care about. ... show more
