The lever controllers have a special braking system that helps to achieve fine, accurate tasks. The gripper can open and close with a maximum 47mm (1. 89 in. ) gap, wrist joint rotation of 180deg. , wrist joint mobility of 98deg. , elbow joint range of 44deg. , base rotation of 270deg. , and shoulder joint motion of 45deg. , with a vertical reach of 16. 35in. , horizontal reach of 12. 42in. , and 50g lifting capacity. Grippers can be removed and replaced with suction components to pick up objects with smooth surface areas of no greater than 50g (1. 75 oz. ). My 9 y/o son who has a robotics fascination needed to understand the principles of hydraulic actuation before we got into pumps, valves and accumulators. This was the perfect starter kit. A word of warning—this is not really a kit for novices. The systems won’t work really well unless you are diligent in following the instructions to bleed each of the cylinders and water lines. It’s a lot of tedious assembly work for a younger kid that should be overseen by someone with at least a little mechanical aptitude. But for the price it is a fantastic teaching tool and precision toy.

Hydrobot arm kit

This kit went to my 13 year old grandson in another state. He's a smart kid and leans toward science. He was excited to get it and a few days later he sent the video. Great summer project he had fun putting together, as well as a learning experience about hydraulics.

Fun toy, difficult assembly

My 8 year old loves this robot. The programming aspect is simple but fun. The assembly is a bit of a chore though. There are MANY pieces which you have to cut out of a frame and make sure that you get all the barbs off so the gears can run smoothly. I’m fairly good at mechanical things and it took me a couple of hours to make sure it was working properly. I would advise having a jewelry making snips tool, small screw driver, and sand paper on hand for the assembly. Those things are not included. If buying this a a gift I would make sure that an adult is prepared to help the kid assemble it.

Challenge to assemble but valuable to teach/learn

With some engineering background, we put it together successfully right away. It took several hours to assemble and I will admit, getting the hydraulics loaded correctly is a bit of a challenge for any 12-year-old without adult supervision. Even then, I could see a lot of folks being overwhelmed by the challenge of not only assembly, piece by piece, with no room for error, to the water-loading hydraulic portion of the assembly. Set aside plenty of uninterrupted time, "roughly" first 40 pages are robot assembly, second 40 pages are hydraulics/pumps/tubing. If you're looking to get your kids interested in robotics, STEM/STEAM, or engineering/manufacturing this is a relatively inexpensive introduction to test the staying power of this low-level technology and their interest. It will also test your patience. Although we've played with it enough now that it's already showing signs of wear and the parts/levers are getting loose. Overall, great introductory toy to robotics!

Awesome robot for the discounted price!

Awesome robot, My 7 years old got it for Christmas and he build it himself (little help here and there for those littlehands) and played every day ever since. Just that, one may need patience which my son has shown he does. I actually bought 2 for discounted price during the time. It was awesome for that price. The same robot can do different functions with a little change. He is enjoying that part as well.

For a beginner robot builder, it was more complex. There were a lot of pieces, however; the science of it is educational and fascinating to watch after coding. The building of the robot was more complex than the coding. The coding was the fun part. If you have a lot of patience and a mind for working out solutions and planning, you will love this. If you just want a quick easy build, this one's probably not for you. We were able to program this robot to shoot the ball that it came with. Value for money was good as expected.
