  • Early impressions are very favorable

I love the sound of this little lavalier. The recording quality is what you would expect of Tascam and the microphone, itself, is very impressive. It manages to capture the true sound of the voice without the nornal "chest boom" you getfrom similarly priced lavaliers. The UI suffers from the tiny screen but is fairly intuitive and the 32 bit float capability makes its use a snap. The recorder is small and light enough to hide on most talent. I need to use it some more to really get a feel for it but so far I'm extremely happy. In very windy environments the mic would benefit from a a foam pop screen or, better yet, a dead cat. Also I recorded myself in a very noisy truck cab using auto-level. It took a little while for the recorder to settle on workable level but once there the audio was as good as you can expect from an environment in which conversation requires shouting! ... show more

  • Awesome little audio recorder
style: Standard
Awesome device, put a 256gb sdcard in it and it works great. Included mic is good, but I use a wireless lav with it so I don't have a wire running along my body, and records nice clear audio.

  • Fixed: Problem with memory cards and it resetting its time stamp- Read!
style: Standard
I really love my Tascam- I bought two, one as a backup. I had a couple of the same problems other reviewers did and have resolved those problems so wanted to leave my notes here. -For memory cards, for some reason Tascam website lists that it is compatible with some cards it doesn't actually seem to be. Make sure your card says Micro SD HC (not SDXC) and you really don't need more than 32GB since audio takes up so little space. I now have absolutely no problems with the cards being read once I follow those two rules. -For the date being reset every time you turn it on or replace batteries. You need to do two things to resolve this. First, make sure you have downloaded the Tascam software to your computer and have the latest firmware on your Tascam. Secondly, there is a tiny lithium battery within the Tascam that is enough to store the date/time. Once you've uploaded the firmware, plug it into a usb charger for a few hours to get that tiny battery fully charged. I was hesitant to get this because of it not being rechargeable, but I realized being able to replace batteries is actually better- I can just keep recording without needing another microphone if my batteries die. I just bought some rechargeable AAA's and I'm good to go with the recharge ability. -The sound on this Tascam is fantastic. I bought a Rode and a DJI lav as well and the sound on those is not very good. Tuscan's is beautiful, especially once you sweeten it up a bit in Final Cut Pro. ... show more

  • Great recorder… Izo software sucks to download
style: Standard
Excellent recorder to use in field. I record and duplicate on site recovery speakers. This recorder is a great asset to my small business. I now have bought 4 to use. The only problem was downloading the Izo software for editing. But recorders are exactly what I needed for doing both MP3 and WAV. Files on the fly. Great product, would be even better if the software was easy to down.old. ... show more

  • Amazing
style: Standard
I took the chance on this vs. buying a wireless Rode or DJI mic. I am a fan of wireless because of convenience but I’d rather have the wired because Im old school and feel like wired produces better quality. With that being said, it was kind of tricky to use the first time because of course I didn’t read the instructions and realize I needed to 1.) format the miniSD card and 2.) set the date and time. Once I did this - recording was SUPER easy. I just wish there was just a button to record and not the slider thing. Sound quality was 5/5. It picks up voices very good and little background noise. I have used it for interviews and random videos and never had an issue. But if you yell too close to the mic you do get bad audio. Battery life has been excellent. I use rechargeable AAA batteries from Amazon and have easily recorded hours at a time. I just recharge randomly when not in use and havent had any problems. I would definitely buy it again. ... show more

32-bit float is the way to go! The audio captured straight from this device is perfect! Extreme clarity and control.

I HATE this device. Apparently you have to charge the internal memory or it won't work. My last few similar Tascams I NEVER had to charge the internal memory. This is just unacceptable.

  • outsanding quality and ease of use
style: Standard
Used this microphone now on 15 shoots. I've run it through it's paces compared to the previous Tascam lav. The 32 bit float is great. Almost no worry about peaking making it nice to dial up the gain a bit more. Battery lasts forever. Would be great if it came with a deadcat for wind, but those are inexpensive addons. ... show more
