Best way to play Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival
You can play Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival without the drums. But it's not the same. You can actually drum and get the feel of what the game should really be. They make the game fun. Which is huge. They are of nice quality and are a treat to play with. You can hit these things as hard as you like, they're not going to break. One downside is that this is accorded only controller that connects via full size usb. If you want to have more than one of them you may end up having to get a USB hub to connect them to that then connect that to your doc. Since there aren't a lot of USB ports available on the official switch docks. This is definitely worth going out of your way to purchase if you want to play this game. Sadly these controllers aren't going to really help you for anything else. So this may not be a buy for you. But I'm happy with what I purchased.

Quality drum. It works as it should.
Hori is known for making sturdy, quality products. Although they are pretty inarguably *most* famous for quality fight sticks, this taiko drum is pretty solid from what I can tell. The hitzones are responsive exactly where any taiko player would expect from a peripheral like this. You don't want to tap this thing lightly. It's a drum, you want to smack it, as other reviewers have pointed out. If you give it solid smacks as you should, it will perform fantastically. If you want to see with your own eyes how this thing performs, I've included a single-song highlight from one of my streams. Also, if you plug this into your computer, it too will recognize it as a taiko controller, and I imagine you can use this for playing taiko charts on Osu (I haven't really been part of the Osu scene in years). I'm an avid rhythm game player, so you know I need a high-quality peripheral, because as much as I use this kind of stuff, it's gotta last, and when it comes to dance pads and taiko drums - peripherals whose *express purpose* is to have the crap beaten out of them in order to play the games they're for - you'd best bet I'm not buying flimsy stuff. These things are quality. Sure, there are adapters you can buy if you want to use your favorite taiko drum you already have from some other console on the Switch, but if you don't already own one or don't want to shop around for an adapter, this is likely the most solid choice you've got that's built specifically for the Switch.

love my drum. good quality
my drum makes me so happy. i use it every day. this video i attached is from a month ago and i hadn’t modded it at that time. i modified it a few weeks ago using the doll room tutorial and it’s very good! i highly recommend modding it, but tbh it works pretty good without the mod. anyway i love my drum you should buy one if you’re thinking about it. it’s so cute, fun to play with, and good quality :) learning to drumroll has been a blast! btw it has some good grips on the bottom so it won’t move around too much on a smooth surface. idk why i used it on the carpet here

Nearly unusable out of the box, modding required
I was hoping that for the higher price the "official" taiko drum controller would be playable out of the box, but it's really not. You have to SMACK the thing about as hard as you can to register any notes, and you'll never be able to do rolls like that or play anything above a 5/10 difficulty in the game. If you're buying this for a kid, maybe that's fine, but if that's the case you might as well just get a cheaper version. Fortunately this is pretty easy to fix, and once you do, it's a good controller. What you need to do is (1) unscrew the five screws holding the drum together (2) use pliers to detach the rubber things holding the drum head on (3) replace the foam piece on the sensors that has holes in it, with a solid piece of self adhesive craft foam. If you just google "taiko drum mod" you'll find better step by step guides. Wrapping the drum in a towel/rubber band and setting it on a cushion deadens the sound quite a bit too. Doing all of this increased my drum's sensitivity by quite a lot, and I can play just about any chart in the game now -- at least, when I mess up it's because of me legitimately missing notes, not because the controller isn't registering.

Good!
Got this for my boyfriend for his birthday and he loves it! He said the drum felt good quality and it had nice bounce to it with the sticks. It also doesn't feel like you're going to break it by hitting it hard, which is nice for a game like Taiko! A few things of note! It does require a few hours of playing for it to become more "sensitive" and actually read your inputs with the sticks. After about a day of playing, he said the game registered his hits pretty consistently. And it is pretty easy to accidentally smack the buttons on the bottom of the drum while you're playing, so watch out for that too! It is VERY LOUD when you're smacking the drum! So, if that is a big deal to you, maybe wear some headphones or play in a secluded place where it doesn't bother other people. Obviously, there are better and more expensive drums you can buy if you're a diehard Taiko player, but for the quality and price, this one is a pretty good start! Pros: + Good quality drum and sticks + Satisfying drum hits + Very easy to connect with the Switch and even PC! + Good price for what you get. Cons: - LOUD - Button placement could be better - Needs about a day of playing to become "sensitive" - Instructions are all in Japanese, but there are tutorials on the internet, so this isn't really a problem!

WORTH IT.
100% worth it. I've been using motion controls for the game (which we all know are pretty glitchy) and this is so much more satisfying. It took me a while to get the calibration just right but since then it's been awesome. I recommend using it with real drumsticks, it not only adds to the immersion but also has made it easier and more accurate in use. I haven't really had any major sensitivity problems, it registers most of my hits. My only complaint is that as I'm hitting the drum, it moves forward and I have to constantly pull it back towards me. There's rubber on the bottom but it doesn't really help much. I'm sure I can mod it to fix it, just not quite sure how yet. Update: After reading some of the other reviews, a few people mention putting water bottles in the back like shown in the picture attached. It adds weight and definitely does help with the sliding!

Expensive because it's an import, but it's legit
Love this controller. It is a little loud (obviously), so I sometimes cover it with a blanket or something. I wish that it also came with sticks more similar to the arcade cabinet, but these work and they look cute with the drum. I bought here vs eBay (even though it was cheaper on eBay) for the free, faster than eBay shipping (there was a delay, so I did not get it in the two days that I thought I would). Really, the only way to play Taiko no Tatsujin is with this controller!! Buttons are boring, and the joy cons are not accurate at all for the game. If you really want TnT, the drum is worth investing in! Plus, HORI is a good brand.
