This is a review of "Swift Compound Kids Microscope SW50 with 40X-400X Magnification" This microscope is amazing. Microscopes have come a long way since the 1970's when we last bought one. Not only is this a good microscope, but it comes with a generous accessory kit. The one thing that is missing is a decent guide for beginners, showing how to use the accessories, what to look at, etc. There is a manual with warranty information (5 years), but the manual is somewhat generic. Some of the things mentioned don't apply to this model. Lack of a guide with a beginner / student microscope is a big omission from an otherwise excellent package. This microscope has the usual 10x eyepiece, not the additional 25x eyepiece that comes with most microscopes. At 40x and 100x power, the image is close to excellent. I looked at a cell phone screen and couldn't detect any obvious chromatic or geometric distortions. At 400x power the image is still good, although the depth of field is very small. This microscope only has a "course" focus knob, without an additional "fine" focus knob. To my surprise, the lack of fine focus isn't an issue. The focus knob turns firmly and smoothly and without any detectable slack. I have no problem getting a sharp image. The image stays sharp and I didn't notice any drifting over time, which can be a problem with some microscopes. After using this for a while, it feels like a more expensive instrument. A few things I found interesting to look at: Cellphone screen, coarse ground black pepper, seasoning, stubble from my electric razor, currency, microfiber cloth. Haven't been outside to collect samples yet. At $33 I would definitely buy again. Worth $50, at least. ... show more

  • Great optics, high value for the price
Really, really impressive microscope for the price. Used to use research microscopes in university labs in the past and wanted something like them. This Swift microscope stacks up well against those from what I remember and should provide more than enough power for most users who aren't looking for anything crazy high end. -Secure packaging: the microscope was shipped very securely in fitted styrofoam cushioning inside the box, nothing rattled around or broke in transit. Assembly was easy, all I had to do was pop in one of the two pairs of eyepieces included, plug in the microscope, and it was ready to go. -Versatility: the swappable objectives and eyepieces make this microscope worth the price alone, in my opinion. Locked on components are good for microscopes that see a lot of wear and tear (like in a classroom), but I like that you can easily upgrade this microscope by buying a new pair of eyepieces or a different objective lens. Super sturdy, heavy and big. Looks like it'll last me years. -Great glass: it's not a Nikon or Zeiss who make super high end optics for cameras and professional research, but those scopes run thousands of dollars. For my purposes and for most casual users, the glass in this microscope performs fantastically. Images are clear and sharp all the way up to 800X magnification (I haven't tried using the 100X objective yet for higher magnification, too lazy to use the immersion oil). Unlike cheaper microscopes, this one comes with a fine focus knob that actually is pretty fine which allowed me to get sharp visuals. I looked at some stained tissue slides with this microscope and was impressed at how clear even the higher magnifications were. Check out my awesome iphone pictures (looking to get a decent eyepiece camera and I'll try to remember to update the photos) -Smooth controls: making adjustments is really easy on this microscope. The stacked coarse and fine focusing knobs are extremely smooth and let you get precise with fine-tuning. The knobs to move the stage and the slide plate are also very fluid. The base and arm are both made of sturdy metal -- hefty but not too heavy. The binocular head also allows you to adjust and move each eyepiece independently, which makes focusing so much easier. I liked that the dimmer on the LED light was continuous and that the highest illumination level was nice and bright without leaving spots when I looked away. Diffused the light well. ... show more

  • Perfect for my homeschooling family
I bought this microscope to use for homeschooling my kids (ages 5, 7, and 13) after doing some research to make sure we were getting a high-quality microscope that they could use all the way up through our high school biology curriculum. I'm really pleased with the quality -- the construction feels very sturdy and helps the kids take it seriously instead of seeing it as a toy. The microscope has a really smart design. For example, instead of individual clips, the stage has a movable slide holder that you can adjust without messing with the slide or the stage position, so you don't have to re-focus every time you want to look at a different part of the slide. The fine and coarse control knobs on both sides are also great, especially if your family has a mix of right and lefthanded kids like mine! As a bonus, the microscope comes with 2 sets of eyepieces (10x and 20x), which gave me a hands-on way to teach the kids about how magnification works. We're all impressed by how sharp and clear the magnification is, especially for the price. Because the microscope came with 50 blank slides, I was able to get the kids excited immediately about looking at items from our house and backyard. We looked at salt and sugar crystals, some puddle water, and a blood smear right away. My 5 year old needs some help preparing slides, since the covers are made of sharp glass, but the other two do great on their own. I'm planning to order a set of prepared slides for Christmas so they have more to explore. It's been a long time since I learned how to use a microscope in school, and clearly there have been massive improvements to how easy they are to use and how much you can see. Highly recommend to any family who wants a high-quality but affordable microscope that you and your kids can enjoy! ... show more
