This 3" mattress pad is just the right amount of softness for me and I can certainly use the cooling aspect of the cooling gel and bamboo. It definitely feels more breathable (less sweaty) than our previous mattress topper with the nice breathable egg carton top. We're finding this topper very comfortable with better sleep. There are actually two covers; the one that comes on the pad and another waterproof one that goes over it. Both zip up and are removable for washing.
