  • Good Harmonica
I Got this one to test after having played numerous models of harmonica from the cheap Chinese brands like Eastop and Swan to the other higher end models of Suzuki or Hohner. This sirius 48s model is among the Top as I've tested, The tone is amazing, the short slide helps with doing thrills and it has a decent weight to it. it seems you get it at a better price here than music stores. ... show more

  • Only a fool would pass this one up...
My Suzuki Sirius-48S has always been the harmonica I've always dreamed of owning. Thanks to both Amazon as well as the seller, my dream became a reality. I own over two dozen quality harmonicas, but the Suzuki Sirius is in a completely different league.

  • Superb quality...great harp
THE SUZUKI SIRIUS S-48S straight tuned chromatic harmonica First, some resources: the website MASTERSOFHARMONICA.COM offers free videos and articles on harmonica selection. An excellent chromatic harmonica book out there is LOVE OF CHROMATIC HARMONICA...TECHNIQUES AND ADVICE FROM THE WORLD'S BEST!, a 678 page book with 120 pages on method, 340 pages of interviews, and reviews of chromatic harmonicas and customizations used by pros. BASICS The Suzuki Sirius S-48S is a 12 hole chromatic harmonica. The S indicates it is the short throw slide model, there is also a cross tuned or C identified model in Japan. You get the notes from C4 up to D7, so it's a bit north of three C4 to C7, plus C#7 and D7. What do the numbers mean? Well, middle C on a piano is C4, so the numbers indicate exactly where the notes are on a piano keyboard. Big Plus...the Suzuki Sirius's phosphor-bronze reeds are essentially problem-free, and pretty much do not break unless you actually hit them with a screwdriver, which happens! Hohner's brass reeds are really a study in planned obsolescence...they break after about a year of play, or some do. Not so with phosphor-bronze, but the phosphor bronze reeds have a bit darker tone. A bit too dark, thus the 3 star rating. A better harp is the Seydel Saxony or De Luxe Steel. The build quality is good on the Sirius...although they do not sand the top of the combs at factory, so they do leak a bit of air. The two-piece silver plated brass mouthpiece which means there is a mouthpiece and a slide making up the mouthpiece assembly. The slide moves smoothly out of the box. Suzuki pioneered the 2-piece rounded mouthpiece and the mouthpiece shape is comfortable to the mouth. Some prefer the trapezoid mouthpieces of Seydel. The bumpers are a bit of an issue, the design means that the slide clips the end of the bumper, not at its mid-point, so the do wear somewhat quickly. The comb is ABS plastic, ok quality. There are brass inserts which you can remove in the comb. The Suzuki Sirius and even the Suzuki SCX models, take more breath to play, and this is not a good thing. The reason is that the upper face of the combs are not flat from factory. If you can't really afford the Suzuki Sirius, get the Suzuki SCX 48. It is a good value. Again, I suggest you get the book, LOVE OF CHROMATIC HARMONICA...TECHNIQUES & ADVICE FROM THE WORLD'S BEST! It's a definitive book on the instrument and goes into great detail on bends, vibrato, breath control and artistic considerations, with input from about 22 of the best players in the world. Another excellent but shorter book is Max De Aloe's METHOD FROM CHROMATIC HARMONICA. For theory, get a used copy of William Duckworth's A CREATIVE APPROACH TO MUSIC FUNDAMENTALS. Most of the musicians who play the Suzuki Sirius models like them. ... show more
