  • Lightweight, convenient, reliable
So much easier to use than any bag system. The long tubes were perfect, we dropped them into puddles, creeks, rivers and were able to pump while standing or sitting on a rock. We used this pump on a long backcountry hike into Grand Canyon. It is surprisingly sturdy, easy to use, well designed and easy to clean despite our ineptude. When the pumping got hard we backwashed it and a lovely stream of mud flowed out. Then it pumped so easily again. No macho muscles needed. It is full of so many thoughtful touches that made it easy to use, carry, clean..... After more than a grueling week of rugged use it still works easily. We are buying another. As to the reviewer who claimed it passed reddish lumps that stained his hydration bladder, it sounds like one of your Boy Scouts added some iodine tablets to your water bladder. Some of us are old enough to remember using those nasty iodine tablets. ... show more

  • Great Filter definitely worth a buy
EDIT: This review has been updated to address my concerns about the listed weight. Previously it was stated the filter was 8 oz. However my own measurements were around 12-13 oz. After posting my initial review I see the manufacturer has now updated their website to list the current version at 12.8 oz, so I am giving this filter 5 stars! The filter seems to work fine - I've tested it on multiple occasions and it does what it is supposed to do. I do have one gripe, but this hasn't actually been an issue yet - the pre-filter isn't really a pre-filter per-se... It is a 0.1 hollow fiber filter (similar to a Sawyer or BeFree) that then goes into a carbon filter and then another finer 0.01 hollow fiber filter. That means if your water isn't pristine, the hollow fibers of the "pre-filter" might get clogged up with gunk just like a Sawyer would. However, I have not yet experienced this problem yet; I am just basing this on my own experiences with identical 0.1 hollow membrane type filters - they all do this. The solution of course is to place a coffee filter or bandana rubber banded around the pre-filter before you pop it in the stream, lake, stock pond whatever. This is just my opinion, but a real pre-filter would have a removable and user cleanable fine-mesh protecting the hollow-fiber element that goes directly into the water in order to protect clogging. See MSR Trailshot or MSR Guardian for what a mesh pre-filter looks like; the purpose of them is to keep silt and other large debris out of the hollow-fibers. Again, easily remedied with a coffee filter here for a fraction of the price of a Guardian. Anyway, I have put this thing into a couple nasty pools of water - one was chock full of algae. The other one was from a spring that was piped into a nasty rusty bucket full of mud and other debris. I was able to get reasonably clear, decent tasting water both times and this is a huge morale and confidence boost on long distance hikes. I have previously filtered from the same algae ridden source with an MSR Trailshot, and the water was still kind of green and tasted foul. Not so with the survivor filter - from the same source there was still a tinge of green to the water but it tasted totally fine. I say if you are concerned with the lightest weight possible, then this filter may not be for you - it weighs 12.8 oz. But if you are sick and tired of smelly green water from nasty sources that, while technically are safe to drink after filtering with a 2oz Sawyer, and want your filtered water to actually taste, smell and look pretty close to tap water, then I would wholeheartedly recommend this filter. ... show more

  • Portable and easy to use
Works good and is easy to use. Would be 5 stars but it’s a tight fit in the bag so that would be my only complaint. Nice to have it small and portable!

  • 2022 Update: Holy cow this is a good filter!
2017 Original entry: Very lightweight and easy to assemble on the go. Seems to have done everything I needed it to. Able to drink creek water and its clear and tastes fine. And no parasites as of yet so thats a plus 2022 Update: Bought this in 2017 for miscellaneous hiking trips. Turned lake water into delicious drinking water. I usually hate the taste even of bottled or tap water but this water was good. Meanwhile, tossed in with my camping gear and forgotten for a while for unrelated reasons, I bought a house in 2020 with extremely hard water. It also has very dry air. I had set up multiple humidifiers but they were leaving a white film all over. I also have a meter that measures particulate matter PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 (used to measure air polution) that measures very small particles of things in the air and humidifiers can increase this when used with hard water. I'd used an under the sink filter, put that tap water into a Brita filter pitcher, and then tossed some doodad into the humidifier thats supposed to remove hard water minerals and even with all that the meter still showed the PM levels rising when the humidifier was running. Remembered I had this filter in with my gear and pumped some water into the humidifier and low and behold the numbers are staying steadily low, not increased even one digit from what it is when the humidifier is off. I'm absolutely blown away. Multiple other filters in succession couldn't do what this filter did by itself. 100% recommend, so much so that I had to come update an already 5 star review just to mention this. You can bet I'll be buying backups of this. ... show more

  • Water filter great for wilderness camping
The media could not be loaded. Bought this as a backup filter to my Sawyer squeeze but ended up using this solely on a week long back country wilderness backpacking trip in the Yosemite National forest. This filter is durable, pumps quickly and easily. We used it to pump approximately 8-10 liters per day for 5 days straight. It never clogged or needed back flushed once. Highly recommend this pump for price and function. Happy hiking. ... show more

  • conenient, compact, easy to use
I bought this to use to filter city domestic water for a nasal rinse, where bacteria needs to be filtered from the water used. This filter is easy to use, and works well.

  • Everything you need to purify drinking water
I did a lot of research before picking up a water filter. I know there are many different styles of water filtration and I felt like a pump filter was the best solution for me. I really like the storage bag and the fact that everything fits in it with a little bit of space to spare. The water pump itself feels very solid, it comes with a little cover that can double as a cup, the hoses are perfectly fine, it includes a bag so you can keep your water in and water out hoses and parts separate, and it event includes a syringe to backwash it. It's literally everything you need to use filter water in the back country successfully in a small bag. ... show more
