So, the obvious choice of microtubule water filters is between this Katadyn BeFree and the Sawyer products. The Sawyer filters are rated for 1 million liters, whereas the BeFree is only rated for 1000, so I guess I'll take one star for that. That being said, you can easily just purchase a new BeFree filter head for $20, whereas you'd have to buy an entire new and expensive Sawyer system. And frankly, you're going to damage the Sawyer SOMEHOW long before you hit 1 million liters. All it takes is one inattentive night when the temperature drops below freezing and it's toast- just as with almost any type of filter, including the BeFree. And eventually all microtubule filters seems to get irretrievably clogged, at least to the point that flow becomes too slow to endure... long before 1 million liters. Speaking of which, cleaning the BeFree in the field is also a lot easier and requires no special equipment, unlike the Sawyer which requires the irrigation syringe. All you do for the BeFree is swish it around in reasonably clean water, because unlike the Sawyer the microtubules are exposed through little windows. Having used both products I can tell you that the BeFree has a noticeably better flow rate, too. But now I come to what was for me the most important reason to choose the BeFree- and you may feel *exactly* the opposite of me. When you buy a BeFree you aren't subsidizing religious proselytization in Africa. Because Sawyer does that- they finance evangelical missions in Africa, so that's where your money is going. I personally- and again, you may feel entirely differently- just can't get behind the model of "if you listen to our preacher we'll give you a way to purify water" model. And don't try to tell that isn't what they do. ... show more

Took this canoeing in the boundary waters and it was absolutely great, filtered the water and it didn’t have that plastic taste. You can break a piece of plastic around the mouth of the lid and tie a string for easier carrying but other than that no easier way to keep it out and available. I did also drop it from about 3-4 feet only once and the cap cracked but luckily was still functional. If the filtered water started coming out slow I would just clean the filter and it would become fast again. Good product that does its job great ... show more

i bought this filter in may i have not used it yet but right out of the package it worked good with already filtered water so i don't know how good it works with dirty water i read some 2 comments that said they got sick from it but those were the only two i saw that some one got sick so i hope this is not a fake pretty simple to clean since you just swish water around it but i will be getting another one for a another backup but i won't get it from amozan out of fear of fakes i am about 99% sure its not fake but gust in case i will get my 2nd one from REI COOP good so far i will test it when i go on my next backpacking trip and am looking forward to using it ... show more

Easy to use and light weight. Sometimes had a struggle to get water in it or to hold on to the bag. After first major hike bag developed a pin hole. Still useable but not something you would like to have happen. Will follow up after warranty claim.
