Description

Superior Bassworks nylon double bass strings are the original 6 string “bump” assortment set (6 total strings of various gauge. See photos.) available to the public for 1/2, 3/4, and 4/4 size double bass. The idea is that some players prefer thinner, lower tension strings while others prefer thicker, higher tension stings. Why not offer a wide array of thickness and tension all in one package of strings? This is exactly what we do! Our string sets also include rubber dipped metal ends. NO KNOTS to come untied in the middle of your set! We are proud to be the only company offering this configuration. You need strings that sound great when played acoustic or amplified, strings that wont tear your fingers up if you need to play 3 sets in one night, strings that stay in tune in hot/cold/humid/dry climates. You need Superior Bassworks Kevlar cored nylon strings for double bass. Perfect for Rockabilly, Psychobilly, Bluegrass, Country/Western, and much much more! The string sizes included in each pack are: .170, .155, .130, .105, .095, .080 (all sizes in inches). If your bass has never had non-steel strings installed, please keep in mind that some modification of the tailpiece string slots, bridge string notches, nut string notches, and tuning machine string holes may be required. This is completely normal, and will not prevent you from switching to other string types in the future. Please measure your bass before ordering. If you are not confident making these adjustments yourself, please consult a professional luthier or more experienced bass player for assistance. These strings are not recommended for school orchestra students.

  • Seven years and counting!
Let’s be honest here... these are just plain cheap upright bass strings. So it would be natural to not expect too much from them. HOWEVER, I put these strings on my 1961 Kay C-1 in 2014 and was impressed that the tone was better than any other nylon strings I’ve used. I’ve tried probably five other brands of nylon strings in the last 25 years, and these sound, play, wear, and tune better than any other that I’ve tried. And the real kicker is that they’re under $50 a set! I play about 200 gigs a year, so that means that this set has been through about 1,400 gigs. I typically play four 45 minute sets of country, rock n roll, hillbilly jazz, and high intensity rockabilly. I’m a ruthless bass slapping maniac, and these strings have earned my highest rating. That’s not to say that their tone isn’t refined enough for the studio. The bass sounds great with a nice mic (Sennheiser 421) on the f hole as well. When playing my bass through an amp, which is most of the time, I use a preamp to carve out some mid frequencies and I can get the bass to sound a lot like I’m using gut strings. It’s not spanky or rubber band sounding at all. When bassists ask me about my set up, they’re usually surprised that my stings are nylon. These look like gut strings too. So I think I should probably buy another set just in case some sort of misadventure should befall my beloved Kay, as well as to help these guys stay in business. This a high quality product, bottom line. If you’re into roots upright bass, GET THESE STRINGS, if for nothing else than a cheap set of back up strings. God bless you! ... show more

  • Superior Bassworks Know What They're Doing!!!
I can honestly say these are some choice strings so far. Taking them out for a spin on a couple of gigs soon so let's see how they hold up. But so far I'm really liking how they feel on my fingers. I'm a type 1 diabetic so my fingers are fairly sensitive but not so much being a bass player. But I've always gotten the worse blisters from playing upright bass but doing a 3 hour rehearsal with these strings I'm satisfied and not worried about that happening again. Soft to the touch and play like butter once you get the tention right. I would totally buy another set. Maybe this time the deluxe set 🤔. Thank you Superior Bassworks!!! ... show more

  • Best $50 I ever spent on strings!
I’m a steady working upright player with 1 to 2 gigs a week. I play only pizzicato in an all original folk/country/blues band. These strings will bring your plywood basses to life… great tone, great feel, great look. A little modification to your tuning peg holes, and tail piece slots will most likely be required to fit the strings properly. ... show more

  • Excellent playability and sound but lose tune quickly.
I started playing with a full set of Innovation wound nylons which tore up my fingers pretty bad after a while and didn't quite have the action I was looking for. Swapped to these when my bridge broke and it's like night and day. They're way easier on the fingers, have great action for playing slap, and don't put as much stress on my bridge. And let's be honest-- the value is crazy good. My only beef is that they go out of tune at the drop of a hat. Update: After a month or so, I've realized it's just the humidity. These are great overall. Changing to 5 stars. ... show more

  • Slippity Slappy fun for the whole family!
Solid strings for the price. Won’t hurt your hands. Sound pretty ok. And the word around town is cats love to chew on them...

  • Great strings
I put these on a home made 2x4 upright bass. The pack comes with 6 strings so you can pick 4 consecutive strings from the pack based on how much play you want on the E string. Their site explains it better. I love the feel of the strings vs my wire wound strings on my double bass. These synthetic gut are just what I was looking for. ... show more

  • Better on the hands for non-bass players.
First off, I'm not a bass player all the time so steel strings tear my hands up after a 30 min set. I bought these for an NS Designs NXT electric upright. They sound amazing on it through my Fender Rumble 100. Better upright sound than the steel strings that were on it. They play amazing and I can play hours on these with no issues. Would be a great string for someone starting out. A few things to consider: These strings are MUCH larger gauge than a "normal" steel string. They will not fit the factory tuners on an NS bass. I had to buy and modify another set of tuners to make these work. But I'm glad I did. I would do it again. These strings have a lot more give so folks that are accustomed to steel strings might think these feel like rubber bands. Again, I love them but I'm not a full-time bass player. ... show more
