This is a surprisingly well designed kit for a cheap product from China. The instructions are solid, and the project itself, while fiddly and bit frustrating at times, goes together well. Assembly took about 4 hours, but I’m old and shaky, and was explaining things to my teenager as we built it together. Software is bare bones, but that’s to be expected, the real fun comes in building the software stack to make your robot friend do what you want. I’m still working on that whole “llm integration” part. This is not a project for people who are unfamiliar with basic assembly, basic electronics, or without a reasonable degree of computer savvy. It’s also not a super advanced device that only an expert can use. It’s somewhere in the middle. Its build quality is very good for a Chinese toy, but not commercial grade. The servos are decent metal geared ones, the sensors and boards are of good construction, and there are a good selection of sensors on the unit to play with, including inertial reference sensor, ultrasonic distance measuring, camera, and even touch. And it’s cute with a good number of premade examples of code in python to control the unit with fun things like tail wagging and scratching. I really like it.

While I have had some experience and training on computers I am by no means a computer genius. I purchased the Pidog knowing it would be challenging, what I didn't expect was the additional expense and frustration. Because of connectivity issues with my laptop and Pidog, I purchased Sunfounder's Touch Screen, Keyboard and Mouse for a little over $100. Only to find out that the cables provided were not all of the correct ones, so an additional purchase of some cables. Once my connectivity issues passed it was onward to assembling the Pidog. As with connectivity the assembly process required numerous visits to the online chat. The answers were basically in a very polite way "follow the instructions" however, if you repeatedly ask the question in a different way you could get some helpful information. I had issues with zeroing and calibrating and when finally started getting them resolved I got a new problem with the functionality between the computer files running and Pidog responding. This is when I decided to get a service ticket. The answer there was much like online chat "follow the instructions" if that doesn't work send us a video by loading it on onedrive. I am not Stephen Spielberg and I wasn't even sure where to find onedrive. While I will continue to "work" with "support" I caution anyone who is even a little skeptical about buying a Pidog - be prepared. Update: I sent the video but my frustration got the best of me and I called Amazon and they sent me a replacement in two days. I don’t know if it’s bad luck or a quality issue but the Robot Hat on my 2nd PiDog was defective. I emailed SunFounder support and this time they accepted my diagnosis and sent me a new Robot Hat. Ten days later my PiDog is now up and running. Still have a lot to learn about programming but at least I have a functional PiDog to work with. Update Aug. 9, 2025 I have been emailing “Susan” in China almost daily since June 24th and my PiDog still does not function 100%. The main issue is it will not perform “push ups” using the app. I have reinstalled everything twice and used a new sd card the last time. It always creates new issues while not resolving the original issue. One of the last recommendations was to use an IPhone or IPad to run the app. I’m pretty sure that wasn’t in the product description. This has been a very frustrating experience and I have gained little knowledge and had little fun throughout the process. I wanted to buy a PiCar or Mars Rover but have lost all confidence in Sunfounders products or their support system. Update: On August 11th they elevated my issue and within 24 hours they had a fix. Additionally they sent me upgraded servo’s to fix the problem I was having with the head and one leg shaking uncontrollably. I received and installed the servos and everything seems okay. It’s a shame I had to go through two months of aggravation to get it to function as advertised. Update: 25 Aug 2025 After some thought and deliberation I have decided to upgrade my review to 4 stars. While I am disappointed with the quality of the items I originally received and the time and effort I had to invest to get my PiDog functioning correctly; SunFounder stayed with me every step of the way to insure I had a functioning product.
