I love this stuff. Best drugstore brand i've personally found is Loreal Sublime Bronze but if you're willing to spend a little more, I would HIGHLY recommend this stuff. It's the only one that hasn't turned me Oompa Loompa orange or turned me a sickly yellow color like my liver is failing. I am EXTREMELY pale, i'm talkin color of a sheet of paper, glow-in-the-dark pale. This isn't too dark on me, so I guarantee it won't be too dark for you. Don't be scared of the "Ultra Dark" description. The lotion comes out as a chocolate brown color. This is simply to help make application easier. You can see where it's going so you don't miss any spots. Super helpful, especially if you're new to sunless tanners. It has a light cherry almond smell that fades and does have that typical sunless tanner smell, but it's not overbearing and goes away after you shower (you're gonna have that smell no matter what sunless tanning method you use because that is the smell of the chemical used in these to turn your skin a color; its unavoidable). It will slightly stain clothes/sheets until you shower off the color guide. This will come out in the wash and isn't permanant. Just wear something you don't care about until you take a shower and if you apply it immediately before you go out, don't wear a light color and make sure rain isn't in the forecast because the color guide will run off of you and cause streaks. The color you are as the "tan" develops is going to be darker than the final result. If you feel you're too dark, just wait, it'll be lighter after your shower. If you like the color, you'll have to do a few more applications until it's the color you will be post-shower. Here's some tips for first time sunless tanners: 1. Exfoliate super well before your first application to get off all dead skin and make your skin smooth for an even application. 2. Work quickly and on one section of your body at a time. Make sure you rub in very well. 3. Coat rough areas (tops of feet/ankles, wrists, knees, elbows, wrists, and knuckles) with a light lotion or body oil and let sink in for a few mins before you start. This will help from too much color depositiong in these areas. 4. Pick yourself up a box of disposable gloves at the store. This will keep your palms from getting dyed which WILL happen if they're not used and good luck trying to get that off. The palms will soak up the color like no other area. 5. Try not to exfoliate too much after your first application because you will scrub off the top layer of skin which is the layer the tanner dyes, so you'll essentially scrub off your work. 6. Apply a light lotion everyday to help maintain the "tan," but make sure your lotion doesn't have AHA's in it that will exfoliate your skin and take the color away. I do 3 consecutive applications to get my desired color and then just reapply as needed after that. When I start to notice uneven patches, I completely scrub everything off and start over to avoid uneven color. It sounds like alot of work but it really doesn't take much more time than putting on regular body lotion after you get the hang of it and it saves your skin from looking like a leather handbag somewhere down the line. ... show more

The BEST self tanning lotion I have used in the past 10+ years. It does not leaves strikes, is easy to apply evenly and without making a big mess, and the best part is the color is a beautiful olive/ tan tint (Not orange at all) and dries so fast! I use to go tanning in my 20's and my skin is paying for it in my 30's so I have stopped but didn't want to go back to my pale self come summertime.     • I've been using this product for 8 years... here's my recommendations.

I've never written a review on Amazon until now, but I recently shared all of these tips that make this tanner look amazing with a friend and so I wanted to pass it along to anyone buying this. I suggest doing this 2 days before traveling. This way you can correct any mistakes or do it again if it’s not dark enough for your liking. 1.) Lay out a pair of old sweatpants and a top you don’t mind getting dirty. (It will wash out, but might stain a little bit). Put your hair up in a clip out of your face. 2.) Take a shower and exfoliate your entire body and face. Shave legs. You don’t need to wash your hair, you can do this when you wash off the tanner later. 3.) After the shower, put a lot of regular lotion or oil on your skin everywhere. Let that sink in for about 15 minutes. Put extra lotion on your elbows, knees, feet, ankles and armpits. 4.) Wipe down hands and dry them, and put on your latex gloves. It’s hard to put on the gloves if your hands are super sticky from the lotion. 5.) Start putting the tanner on everywhere. It will look very dark, don’t worry. This is not the color of the tan. It has a dark instant tint in it so you can see where you put it. Be sure you do not miss any areas. It will look like mud. Apply it in circular motions all over. 6.) Important parts to be careful of - ******* use half regular lotion and half tanner on these parts. Feet and ankles - get in between your toes and around the edges of your feet, DO NOT put on the bottoms of your feet. Face - go all over face and into your hairline and ears Hands - Take your gloves off and put the tanner on the TOP part of your hands. Rub the top part of your hands together and get in between your fingers and into the webbing between each finger. DO NOT put this on the palm of your hands because it turns a weird color. 6.) You will look VERY muddy and weird. That is normal. Put your old sweatpants and top on so you can be clothed and do other stuff. 7.) Wait around 3 hours for it to process. It actually says overnight, but it’s not necessary. *I like to wash my hands and feet around the 2 hour mark because it can get too dark for my liking in those places. 8.) When it's time to wash it off. Get in the shower. You will see a lot of brown stain come off. This is just the top layer that’s suppose to come off. You can GENTLY use a washcloth to rub over your body to get any excess off. If there are any areas you do not like for some reason, use any kind of oil on that part and exfoliate that part gently. 9.) After the shower, I suggest putting on regular lotion just to moisturize the skin. This is the only product I will use because it has a great color and looks natural.     • Best I've Tried, But Not Perfect
I don't have much luck with sunless tanners. I'm very pale and I don't like the health risks associate with tanning in the sun. I've tried many popular drugstore brands I wouldn't go back too. I've tried Jergens Natural Glow, which was my favorite of the low budget variety. It gave nice gradual color but the smell disgusts me so much that I never end up using it for very long. I read glowing reviews about Sun Labs, so I decided to take the hit on my wallet it and give it a try. Keep in mind I only bought a full size version of this product, and not the accompanying scrubs, lotions, etc. COLOR: The color is fantastic and gives you a very realistic tan, even if you're starting off as pale as I am. It's the most realistic "quick" tanner I've used, Jergens being the most realistic gradual tanner. The color seems to have an olive undertone instead of orange, ensuring more natural looking bronze skin. APPLICATION: The lotion is darkly tinted so you see exactly how it's applying. Take note that if it looks uneven during this time you had better fix it or else it will end up looking just as bad once it sets. I still recommend using a bit of white lotion mixed in a drop of this stuff for your rough spots like knees and feet, or else it may end up soaking too much color as with most tanning lotions. A note on the dark tint: the tint is there to help you apply, and serve as a visual. It also helps you look much darker. Once you take your first shower after using the product, you will appear much lighter because the tint will wash away. So don't be afraid if the water turns dark brown and you look much lighter after stepping out. Personally I like washing off the dark tint as soon as possible. LONGEVITY: If you make sure to exfoliate properly before using, it will last a few days. To avoid looking splotchy and to make sure it comes off evenly, you have to continue exfoliating well every day. While this means it wont' last too long, at least it doesn't fade unevenly. SMELL: The main reason I stop using self tanners is because of the bad smell all tanning chemicals have. There seems to be no way around this. Sun Labs has a lovely smell when first applying, smells like cherry, but after an hour or so the perfume fades and the typical self-tanning smell arrives. It's much more subtle than any other tanner I've tried, which is a huge plus. However, it's still there. I have sensitive smell and I get very self-conscious when I smell it and usually stop using the tanner for a while. It's even worse when I go to the gym. A lot of people have had good luck with the smell, but there is a risk it won't work well for you. If this is a determining factor, I suggest trying a sample and going from there. I can only use this product every once in a while before the smell defeats me and I decide being pale for the summer is better than smelling weird. OVERALL: Three stars for being one of the best options out there right now. Great application and color. Average longevity. Smell is the most subtle from what I've used, but is still there and bothers me enough to be turned off from using it after a while. If you're desperate for something that looks natural and is easy to use, give this a shot! Just beware if you're sensitive to smells. ... show more

I purchased the Sun Laboratories Natural Beauty Sunless Tanner in shade Ultra Dark. I have tried countless self tanning products, spray tans and even had my own airbrush machine. I have been obsessed with achieving the perfect bronze tan for almost 2 decades and am always looking for the latest products to help me reach my goal. I really like that this product came with a pump for easier distribution of product. Also included in the box were heart stickers and gloves. There was not an application mitt included but I would highly recommend buying one separating or using one you already have. When I tried to apply without the gloves it was pretty hard to blend and looked streaky. The product comes out a thicker consistency but also kind of watery, the best way I can describe it is similar to a chocolate syrup. It is very wet. I really like the undertone of the formula, it applies as a nice bronze color and does not look orange at all. It does take a bit of times to blend, definitely take your time or it can apply unevenly. This is another reason why using a mitt is so important because it helps absorb some of the product making it easier to get a seamless blend. Before applying ANY self tanner it is so important to prep properly. Make sure you shower, shave, exfoliate and moisturize. I cannot stress this enough. If you are not properly exfoliating you are going to look patchy, the product is going to pill and cling to dry spots and it’s going to look awful no matter how amazing the product is. Some pro tips: 1. wash, shave, exfoliate, moisturize 2. Make sure your skin is completely dry before application 3. Apply Vaseline on hands, feet, elbows, knees or any areas you don’t want the product to cling to 4. When applying to face, neck and chest use a fluffy makeup brush. It will help distribute the product super evenly and keep it out of your hair line. I recommend applying it to your face in the same way you would contour for a snatched effortless look. 5. Use a mitt 6. Have a friend help you with your back. 7. When you do your hands and feet gently pat whatever product is leftover on the mitt over these areas, do not rub or apply more Leave the product on 6-8 hours before getting wet. It ALWAYS looks better after a shower. I did not experience a weird smell with this product and I really appreciated it didn’t have the traditional “fake tan” scent. I also did not have any staining on my hands or sheets. Once I showered it was a pretty bronze color but not 100% even and that was a bit frustrating as I like to consider myself a pro. The product was not the easiest to work with and a bit messy. It is a very beautiful sun kissed tone and I will use the rest of the bottle but for the price I am not sure I will purchase this again.
