  • Good for large shrubs, small trees and hedges
Size: 21-Inch Blade Style: Hedge Trimmer
As many have noted, the business end of this machine is not feather-weight. However, it is a reasonable weight for the utility it represents. The cutting blades are long enough to cut the entire top of a medium-sized hedge so there is no need to do the top from both sides. With the poles extended, it is also long enough to trim a 10 to 12 foot hedge without a ladder. Some may notice that I give an overall rating of 5 stars, but only 3 to light weight and 4 to weight distribution. I think that the overall performance is all I hoped for, maybe a bit better for a lower-priced tool. I suppose it could be made with more aluminum or other lighter weight materials, but that would bring about other compromises in quality and price. Sure, I would like it if it weighed only half what it weighs, but it is still a whole lot better for the job than my previous options. Hence, the stars. For a point of reference, I am a 71 year old woman, 5'4" (used to be 5'6", but age happens). I do most of my own yard work on 2/3 acre lot that has very little lawn. I work for about 2 to 4 hours at a time just about every day when it is not pouring down rain. I used to put in longer hours, now I am looking for the right tools to help me do the work with less of a time investment. This tool fits into my needs nicely. I have also found this very useful for the small ornamental trees in my borders. These are about 6-8 feet tall, just a mite too tall to conveniently trim with normal cutters. In the past I have resorted to doing the very tops of these small trees with a pole trimmer, 1 little branch at a time. In comparison, the extension pole trimmer makes very quick work of the job. I trade off between this trimmer, a regular trimmer, and clippers for clearing dead flower stalks between the trees. That takes care of the weight issue. By the end of a few hours I have done a considerable amount of trimming and cleaning. I was pleased with the blade protector that came with the trimmer, which makes it easy to store the trimmer in the shed. My one nit-pick with this tool is that the strap seems poorly placed. It actually is in the way and really does nothing to offset any of the weight of the tool when the pole is extended--which is the only point I see in having the strap. I have only used this for about 4 hours total, so far, but will update if any of my opinions change. ... show more

  • Works well. Great for tall shrubs and short people.
Size: 21-Inch Blade Style: Hedge Trimmer
It is a bit heavy on the business end and can be a bit of a struggle to control at full extension, but that is more of a 'Law of Physics' situation than engineering problem. It seems to be a well built, durable product for a home owner and makes the job a lot easier. I would recomemend to a friend.

  • Excellent !! Excellent !! Excellent !!
Size: 19-Inch Blade Style: Hedge Trimmer
My 10-year-old corded trimmer finally died, and I was looking for a replacement. I searched for a week and it looked like my only options were ones with and gas engine or batter power. The "Name Brand" ones at the big box store were $600 to $800 with the most expensive one being the battery GND ones. I was searching AZ for a cheaper alternative and in the middle of the battery powered ones was this corded one by SunJoe for about $90 with tax. I already own a few Sun Joe products and they have worked perfectly for many years. As you see from the (pic 3) this trimmer requires a 14 gauge drop cord to prevent the motor from overheating and losing power. My 8 year old Sun Joe Scarifier/Dethatcher requires this size cord, so I already had one. Since this is going to be a dedicated pole trimmer (pic 2) I removed the hand safety switch (one screw on each side) so it is narrower and doesn't block the view of the cut area. The trimmer is fairly balanced when not extended but when it is, it is top heavy. As you see in (pic1) I strapped a 1 1/2 lb leg weight through the handle and it off set the weight of the cutter head and made the shoulder strap the pivot point instead of the arms and wrists. With the added weight it is still lighter than the ones at the big box stores. This trimmer cuts clean and fast (keep the blades oiled) and it didn't wear me out (I am 72 years old). Because of the articulating head that my old one didn't have, I didn't have to climb a ladder to level the top of my 12 foot Green Giant hedge. Highly recommended! ... show more

  • Good value, rugged corded telescopic electric pole hedge trimmer
Size: 18-Inch Blade Style: Hedge Trimmer
I am a tool guy as a career general contractor, so I know tools and this one is a good value. My upright evergreens had been getting rangy looking and too tall. To prune with a standard hedge trimmer on a ladder (which is very dangerous and not recommended) was a no go. So I bought this Sun Joe unit. Yesterday was the da...after procrastinating for a month haha...to take on the tall evergreens in my yard. This machine is well built and cuts even woody sticks in my overgrown shrubs well up to 1/4" in diameter. The power head at the end of the pole is heavy though, and some strength is required to manipulate it but it does a great job. (smaller and less strong users please take note it takes some strength to run this thing and even at over 6 feet and in good physical shape I was tired after 90 minutes running it). I did scratch my head at assembly (you have to insert the fibreglass pole into a plastic receiver in the power head and secure with a plastic collar) as the instructions on that were not clear. But I figured that out and otherwise this thing did a great job over the 2 hours I used it. A note that having a "cord minder" (i.e. my wife) was/ is helpful for keeping potential for mincing the cord or tangling it in a shrub or something else low. And if some distance from an outlet one must use a heavy 10 or minimum 12 gauge cord (luckily I have both). Also, the unit has several adjustments for angle of the cutting blade head. Didn't use that feature for the tall shrubs but I did to cut stuff along the ground: I was actually able to use it to cut a tall weedy patch of area next to our lawn flush with the ground like an old style sickle bar mower. I can see getting a lot of use out of this Sun Joe as years pass until I either sell the house and begin condo life or I get too old and feeble to wield this thing on my tall arborvitaes and other evergreens. And, as it's corded. there are no batteries to fuss with and their added cost. This is my 3rd Sun/Snow Joe tool (I also have a corded lawn thatcher and 21" snow thrower from them). I like them and think are well built and good values for the investment in them. ... show more
