  • Great stuff
Replaced the 5MT and rear differential oil in an 04 Legacy 35th L with this stuff. At 140K, neither had been replaced. Oopsie. There is a smoother shift with this stuff (compared to 9 YO oil .. duh). The old oils were quite a bit thicker although there wasn't much in the way of metal shavings on the magnetic plugs of either. Bottom bolt on the differential required my feet on an 18" breaker bar to start but switcheroo was uneventful. Next time I will use tin foil to protect the parts of the exhaust system that the 5MT oil spills on when emptying, I get a bit of cooked differential oil smell (not oil level, not leaks, just the smoking from that oil that spilled over the exhaust pipe that I tried to wipe with a shop towel but is hard to remove all that way). A bit of tin foil would be a simple way to prevent this from happening next time. Shipping from Fred was fast and the packaging was excellent. ... show more

I replaced the Motul/Redline cocktail I had in my 2005 STi with this stuff. It works well, shifts ok, but takes a bit of time to warm up and shift better. It feels "thinner" than the Motul/Redline cocktail when cold, and when hot which doesn't give a lot of confidence in hard shifting. This will work if you're a daily driver kinda guy, or your transmission is rather new and fresh but if you have a used, abused, or want a better performing transmission oil I would suggest mixing Redline shockproof light with Motul 75w/90 or whatever the kids are suggesting on the forums these days. ... show more

  • NOT Extra S
As many others have mentioned, this stuff is routinely advertised as a replacement for Extra S. That is technically correct. However, many places imply (or hope that buyers infer) that this is just quart bottles of the same Extra S that came in drums. That is not the case (samples have been sent to lab and they are different). This stuff may work just fine, and this does seem to be exactly what most Subaru dealers are going to put in your car if you take it to them. However, the properties may not be the same as what came in your car. My transmission feels more notchy than before, so I'm going to go ahead and change it out for one of the premium brands and see how it goes. For the rear diff it's probably fine, and I still would feel okay using it in the diffs on an auto trans Forester. ... show more

  • Excellent product! bottle may be over sized.
Very happy that I chose this tranny oil. My 2002 WRX wagon still shifts like butter. No grinding issues at all. I chose this route instead of a cocktail as this is easier to procure. I dont think this is a con but I do have to mention that I only used 3 bottles to fill my car as it requires 3.8 quarts. Not sure if the bottles are just a little larger than expected, I had some leftover oil in the tranny, or a little of both. In the end I only used 3 bottles while I ordered 4. Guess I will use the extra bottle for the next oil change. ... show more

  • Best review for gear oil on the entire internet. Short & to the point.
This is the good stuff. If you own a Subaru, and you aren't using extra S, than you are probably extra S yourself. and I don't mean Smart. Buy the oil, you are not going to outsmart the engineers at FHI or Subaru with your synchromesh because you have been doing 7,000 rpms launches in your 2002 WRX thinking you are going to impress other 16 year olds on YouTube. You are going to need a new scooby is what you are going to need. ... show more

Purchased this to do a transmission oil change on my 2005 WRX. I was hoping it would help cure the pesky 1st gear and reverse engagements which it didn't help with at all, in fact it made shifting overall somewhat more difficult. From what I have read on NASIOC and other oil resource pages Subaru isn't making the Extra S anymore and instead this has taken it's place, I'm not sure how I feel about it. I'll likely try Motul next time. ... show more

  • So far so good
Based on the other reviews i decided to go ahead and try this stuff out. My transmission shifts about the same as it did before so i'm guessing this stuff is legit. i wasn't expecting it to be the miracle gear oil that gave me "buttery" smooth shifts but seems like it works well.

  • So far, so good
I picked this up to try to treat a buzz/grind when shifting from 4th to 5th gear. I was really worried that it was a problem with the transmission but so far (about 600 miles in) the Extra-S has taken care of it and given me a bit more piece of mind.
