Description
Named for a long-shuttered beauty parlor that housed the first Stumptown location, Stumptown Hair Bender was the very first blend that Stumptown founder Duane Sorenson introduced to the world. In fact, we still have the Hair Bender sign in our headquarters, watching over us as we roast each batch. Hair Bender is a complex blend featuring coffee from three major growing regions; Central and South America, East Africa, and Indonesia. Its complexity is what allows for a harmonious flavor profile of sweet citrus, milk chocolate, and caramel. We continually taste this blend and each of its components, both on the cupping table as well as espresso, to best maintain the balance of flavors. Nearly 20 years ago, Stumptown Coffee Roasters began roasting exemplary coffee. Headquartered in Portland, Oregon, Stumptown is committed to sourcing, roasting and serving some of the best coffee in the world. I’ve been a coffee lover for years, and I’m always on the hunt for something with a little more character. Stumptown Coffee’s Hair Bender definitely does not disappoint! The blend offers a perfect balance of complexity and smoothness. It has rich, bold flavors with a touch of cocoa, caramel, and a slight fruity finish that keeps me coming back for more. I usually brew it in my French press, but I’ve tried it with a drip coffee maker as well, and it holds up great either way. It’s strong, but not overwhelming, and has a nice, clean finish that doesn’t leave any bitter aftertaste. If you like your coffee with a deep, multi-layered profile, Hair Bender is a must-try. It’s a bit on the pricier side compared to your standard supermarket beans, but the quality is absolutely worth it. I’m officially hooked and will definitely be ordering more soon!

I did not have a problem as many reviews have on the freshness of the product. The beans arrived in a timely manner, they did seem a bit old just from the aroma. I ground the beans and could smell a variety of aromas, I was impressed. I have an Elektra Microcasa that makes one hell of an espresso, and wow the caffeine content is through the roof. I made a ristretto first then around 7 hours later tried a less tampered espresso. The taste was phenomenal much better than any local coffee roasters around here. i was overwhelmed by the "buzz" it gave me, felt my teeth clench and felt anxious for hours. A friend stopped by and i made him an espresso 3 hours later he called me to describe the same symptoms. So overall this is one of the better roasts out there, but watch out it packs quite a punch!

If You’re Still Buying Grocery Store Beans, We Need to Talk

Stumptown Hair Bender is not “coffee.” It is structure. It is architecture. It is a calibrated sensory event. I’ve been through the phase. The “this is fine” supermarket beans. The oily, over-roasted charcoal disguised as “bold.” The pre-ground tragedy that tastes like regret and cardboard. Hair Bender is none of that. First: the aroma upon opening the bag. Dense. Layered. Cocoa, citrus oil, faint caramelized sugar. Not the flat, ashy blast of dark roast mediocrity. This is aromatic complexity. You inhale and immediately realize your grinder has a purpose again. The beans themselves? Even roast. No scorched oil slick sheen. No inconsistent mottling. Proper development without tipping into bitterness. Whoever roasted this batch understood heat curves and didn’t just set it and pray. Dial it properly. (Please don’t insult it with a blade grinder.) Medium-fine for pour-over, 18g in, 36g out for espresso in 28–30 seconds. Respect the ratio. Respect the bean. The first sip delivers structured chocolate and balanced acidity — not sour, not sharp, not confused. The citrus is integrated, not screaming. The sweetness is clean, not syrupy. The finish lingers without turning bitter or drying out the palate like poorly extracted nonsense. Milk drinks? Elevated. Straight espresso? Composed. Pour-over? Articulate. If your coffee tastes “fine,” it’s not fine. You’ve just normalized mediocrity. Hair Bender reminds you what calibration tastes like. Is it precious? Yes. Does it deserve to be? Also yes. If you’re not weighing your dose and timing your extraction, maybe sit this one out.

Not a premium roast

Has a weird taste. Does not foam up well in my espresso machine like other coffees. Not a premium roast in my opinion. Coffee is smooth and drinkable but will not purchase again.

So this used to be one of my favorite coffees. Bold taste, dark roast without tasting chard. The last 2 times I have ordered this coffee it has been sub par and seriously inconsistent on the roast. When I ground this coffee it looked like I added blonde coffee beans in. Unfortunately the quality has become lacking and that is unacceptable at this premium price point.
