I'm very happy with this tool so far. It has a good heft, bright back-light display and gives accurate results. Note that the AC-wire detect mode has a range of 2" this means that a wire at the back of a standard stud cavity of 3.5" would likely not be detected. Similarly the metal detect mode is advertised at 2.36", so again a pipe at the back of a wall cavity might not be detected. ... show more

    • Does what it should, easy to read display, pretty easy to use with multiple "modes"

Instructions are fairly clear, although I have to point out that they read as if they were written in another language and translated to English. Not a huge deal, but some words/phrases are not used correctly or don't 'read' the way they should. No points docked for this, it's a stud finder. They've been made the same for decades and they operate the same. So far, this studfinder is doing well for me for some around-the-house projects. I really like how the display alerts me to the left, right, and center points of a stud. I also like how there's different "modes" such as "deep" (for thick drywall), metal (for studs), and AC (can detect if there's wiring behind the drywall). So far I have no complaints. I will say the "calibration" part is a con. It's not that it takes that long or is overly difficult, but before using EVERY TIME, you have to "calibrate" by putting the studfinder on a part of the wall where there are no studs, hold a button for 5 second and wait for a beep. This is to let you know it's done and it's ready to search for studs. It's a 'con' because I can imagine a lot of people don't know how to locate studs WITHOUT a studfinder, and they're probably going to think it's broken/not working if they just use it straight out the box without calibrating first. ... show more

It's easy to use. Press button to initial setup. On smooth surface the reading is ok. On rough surface the reading is not consistent. The reading to electric wire and deeper stud are good. If the initial setup reading has a stub, it will miss other studs' reading. It must initiate at no stud behind for good reading. If it ever leaves the wall, it needs to have initial setup again. ... show more

I purchased this stud finder to replace my 40 year old Craftsman that totally failed in the middle of a job. Compared to my old finder, this is like comparing a Model T Ford to our new Rav 4. WOW!!! It is incredibly easy to use, very accurate and packed with features that I could only dream of in my younger house building days. I am 90 years old and needed to install a vertical safety bar in the bathroom. This finder will not only give you an accurate center line of the stud but also the edges. When mounting a Handicap safe grab bar, you need to know where the edges are so you can drill your pilot holes at an angle to insure that you are going into wood, not dry wall. Later in the day, our son, a commercial electrician, used it to mount a very heavy wood carving in the front foyer. He was amazed at how much better it was compared to his commercial grade unit. He liked the feature that you did not have to hold down any buttons after you calibrate this unit. I liked the very easy way to insert the 9 volt batter with out trying to pry off the usual dress snap with wires method. It took me a few minuted to learn how to turn off the unit but holding down the mode button for a few seconds took care of that bit of confusion. I did find that the 1" mode setting worked better on the drywall in our house. Our home is a factory built modular home with 6 inch walls so that may account for that setting. As a retired Bio Medical design engineer with an Honorary Doctorate, this unit is above and beyond all expectations and highly recommended. ... show more

    • Works as a basic studfinder well

Arrived quickly. Seems like a solid unit. Supply your own 9V battery. Works as a basic studfinder for drywall just fine. Gives you a nice 5 second countdown for the calibration time. Gives you the right or left edge, and the center of the stud nicely. The electrical wire presence seems to work pretty accurately, but I would be careful with trusting any tool for that. It detects changes in density so pipe location might work sometimes, again I'd be careful trusting any tool for that vs an actual visual look. As a locator in tile for stud or wire or pipe, not the right tool. Overall, a nice spare studfinder to have for me. ... show more

    • A mixed bag

This stud finder is a bit of a mixed bag. When it does work, it works wonderfully. It detects electrical signals and depth of studs consistently and accurately. Where it fails, however, is at actually finding the studs. The device has to be recalibrated constantly for any level of accuracy, and will still give false positives at times. Of the three studs I found to hang items in my house, the stud finder was accurate on two, and gave a false reading on one. I tried shallow and deep scanning, and it consistently detected a stud where there was none on the third try. Additionally, it detected a metal stud in the third try, which was inaccurate as there was no stud at all there. Overall, I still found this product useful, as it let me determine the depth of the studs in my walls and helped to locate electrical signals so I wouldn’t drill into wires; the stud finding function was a bit lackluster though. EDIT: Since my purchase of this device, I have had much contact with the seller. In light of these events, I have to say that their customer service is quite excellent, and if you are looking to purchase a stud finder, tavool does have wonderful dedication to their customers.
