The media could not be loaded. I Can BUILD a JOHNNY 5 ALL MY OWN?!? That is a reference to the Short Circuit movies. An iconic movie from my childhood! "Johnny 5 IS ALIVE!!" Such an iconic movie! And this just speaks to my inner child. This is one of those building learning kits that have grown in popularity over the years. It's a lot of fun, but it is very attention intensive. I am personally enjoying it so this is for sure something that an adult will like putting together. Of course I can be extremely immature at times. So if you have that immature streak than yeah, this is perfect for you! The price is excellent for the quality that this little buildable has! The is perfect for a day indoors! The instructions are not the best and it took forever putting together. My daughter lost interest and I was stuck with it. It is very easy to make a simple mistake and when you do everything needs to be removed back to the point of your mistake. Hope that made sense. Quite a bit more difficult than Legos.

I got this as a gift for my grand daughter. She is 6 years old. The description said for kids 6-16. Then it also says 9-12. That said this toy is a bit much for a 6 year old. She loves the toy but be warned, the parent will be doing most of the work. There is a gazillion tiny little pieces. Still it's a cool toy. The description is slightly misleading which is why I gave it 4 stars.

I didn't even bother building this because the motor is defective. It's supposed to have 3 distinct motors that are controllable separately. 1 that spins freely for forward/back function, 1 that spins freely for turning left/right function, and 1 that rotates slightly left/right and then snaps back (for turning of the head or similar). I tested the motor functionality with both the remote and the app. On mine, both of the free-spinning motors spin together no matter what. Like, pressing the controls on either side of the physical remote or app remote makes both of those motors spin simultaneously. That means there would be no way to construct the robot such that it can have independent control of going forward/back or turning left/right. It will constantly be moving forward/back at the same time it is turning left/right. Getting the app is also a bit sketchy as it's not available in the app store and the manual has you go to a webpage to download the APK and install manually. This is security concern and I would've preferred to avoid it, but wanted to verify if my issue was with the motor's control chip or the physical remote. It is unfortunately a problem with the actual control chip for the motors and not the remote, so that was a pointless risk. I did at least upload the APK to virustotal first and verify nothing was flagged, but I'd still advise caution as they could change the file on the download page any time, or the page could be easily hacked (it's not even HTTPS). The app is not necessary for manual control at all; the only point to it is if you want to program command sequences. I disassembled the motor box hoping it was just wired up wrong or something, but judging from the labels on the PCBs everything is wired correctly. There is just something weird with the programming of the logic chip I guess, which is not something I can fix. Each motor is wired to a separate set of labeled pads that make sense to me: F/B, L/R, and T+/T-. The battery is wired to V+/V- and the antenna is wired to ANT. Since I can't fix it, I will likely end up returning this unless the seller offers to replace the motor. If I end up with a working motor then I will update the review.
